So soon as the manuscript corrections of Mr. Test-words _.., i i and test Lollier s ioho, 1632, were promulgated, verbal critics phrases, cast about for such intrinsic indications of genuineness or spuriousness as those corrections might present. The obvious method of testing the genuineness of the corrections was to select a word or phrase which had the appearance of being modern in sense, or idiom, and by an induction of instances in which the word is employed by writers of the last two centuries to prove, or at least to attempt to prove, the negative, that such word or phrase was not in use at all, or in a particular sense, till a certain period; and of course if that period were subsequent to the ostensible date of the manuscript notes, the " old corrector" would be degraded into a modern simulator. Nothing is so slippery as the proof of a negative. In the case of the fabrications of Chatterton, as in those of the Irelands, the spelling alone ought to have been sufficient evidence of fraud; but in the absence of a knowledge of obsolete orthography, the frequent recurrence of yts or its ought still to have been conclusive evidence of the spuriousness of the ma-The test.... word its ap nuscripts. Book excerpt: Theories stating that plays attributed to Shakespeare were in fact written by other authors have existed for more than 200 years; some theories have been ridiculed and reviled while some have gained growing popular and scholarly support. The history of the Shakespeare controversy is presented in this revised edition of the 1992 work, with much new information and three additional chapters. Part I documents and critically assesses the most important theories on the authorship question. Part II is an annotated bibliography, arranged chronologically, of the many works that deal with the controversy from its vague beginnings to the present.

Book excerpt: "From away back toward the very beginning of the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy I have been on the Bacon side, and have wanted to see our majestic Shakespeare unhorsed. My reasons for this attitude may have been good, they may have been bad, but such as they were, they strongly influenced me." -Mark Twain (1909) Is Shakespeare Dead?-From My Autobiography (1909), by Mark Twain, is about the age-old debate whether Shakespeare wrote Shakespeare. Twain supports the Baconian theory, which holds that Sir Francis Bacon, philosopher, scientist, and statesman, wrote the plays which were attributed to William Shakespeare. This replica of the original illustrated edition of Is Shakespeare Dead?, offers both an intriguing and entertaining read.
