Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools As this book will rarely be used by beginner's, it is thought important to indicate the differences between German and the English methods of pronouncing How the Romans themselves pronounced their is not known, nor can it ever be known. Scholars not agree in Opinion respecting the extent of this rance; but even if it were in itself very limited, pe mg, for instance, only to the sound of might with reason be made an Objection imitate the original pronunciation of the language number of distinct sounds is so small in such a as the Latin or our own, that every one of them a thread through every page, and constitutes an element of it. The difficulties which attend this subje and are inherent in'it, are such, that there is no nation Europe the classical scholars of which agree in olaimi that they can reproduce the forum, or in attempting to do so. On the other hand, the scholars Of each nation pronounce Latin, in the main, according to the analogy of their own language. There is no method which can properly be called continental. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School Latin Grammar for the Use of Schools, Colleges, and Private Students Competent and candid critics are aware that a book of this size, in spite of its title, is not meant for school use in the same sense as the Primer and other lesson-books of a similar kind. As a school-book (for there is no limit to its use by any students who are capable of good private reading) masters can use it in two ways (r) by enforcing general or occasional reference to its principles and rules in reading Latin authors (2) by requiring definite portions to be prepared for periodical examinations conducted on paper as well as orally. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar The present book is a revision of my Latin Grammar originally published in 1895. Wherever greater accuracy or precision of statement seemed possible, I have endeavored to secure this. The rules for syllable division have been changed and made to conform to the prevailing practice of the Romans themselves. In the Perfect Subjunctive Active, the endings z's, imam, -z'zz's are now marked long. The theory of vowel length before the suffixes -gnus, -gna, -gnum, and also before j, has been discarded. In the Syntax I have recognized a special category of Ablative of Association, and have abandoned the original doctrine as to the force of tenses in the Prohibitive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Grammar IN this short Grammar of the Latin Accidence I have endeavoured to arrange the paradigms in such a way as to give some hint of the connection between the different forms, Without departing from the traditional number and order of Declensions and Conjugations. In the arrange ment by stems I have closely followed Mr. Roby, even in the somewhat uncertain distinction between consonant and i-stems in the Third Declension pf Nouns, feeling that some division is necessary, and that his is more satisfactory than any other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges: Founded on Comparative Grammar Our aim has been to prepare, within moderate com pass, a complete Latin grammar, to be used from the beginning of the study of Latin until the end of a college course. The whole has been composed from our own point of view, and is, in all essentials, a new and independent work. But we have used freely the standard authorities, as well those of the older scho lastic as of the newer critical and scientific schools. In several points, particularly the topical arrangement of the Syntax, we have followed the outline sketched a few years ago by Professor Allen, of the University of Wisconsin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Grammar of the Latin Language: For the Use of Schools and Colleges Tmc Grammar here presented to the public originated in I design, formed several years since, of preparing a new edition of Adam's Latin Grammar, with such additions and corrections as the existing state of classical learning plainly demanded. We had not proceeded far in the execution of this purpose, before we were impressed with the conviction, which our subw quent researches continually confirmed, that the defects in that manual were so numerous, and of so fundamental a character, that they could not be removed without a radical change in the plan Of the work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ahn's Complete Latin Syntax The present Complete Latin Syntax which forms a part of ahn-henn's Latin Course, is designed to meet the wants of advanced students. While the systematic study of Syntax has been provided for in the author's Latin Grammar and Third Latin Book With special regard to those who are preparing for college, in the present volume the aim has been to furnish a fuller exposition of those matters which are merely hinted at in the elementary books; or, in other words, to provide a full course of Latin Syntax which may be used at once as a text-book for the class-room, and a book of reference in study. The points which have received particular attention and in the statement of which great pains have been taken are the following: to set forth the facts and laws of Classical Latin (as established by the best authorities, caesar and cicero) just as they are in themselves; to describe clearly and accurately the real difficulties of Latin construction, to put the rules into a form which will be as concise as possible and still remain clear and simple, and to illustrate them by carefully selected examples which are given without the usual mutilations, and, withal, to guide the student as readily as possible to the Latin Authors themselves by teaching grammar, not as if it were worthy to be studied on its own account, but only as the means to an end. A superior Index and judicious typographical arrangement enable the student to find readily What he needs. The Manual of Latin Prose Composition which has been prepared to accompany this volume, is designed to give a complete review of Latin Syntax, illustrated by examples selected from the classical writers, the written exercises being introduced by model sentences for oral practice, and accompanied with full references to the Complete Latin Syntax, and a Vocabulary. It is the result of a thor ough and complete revision of the author's Latin Gram mar published in 1864. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ahn's Latin Grammar: With References to the Exercises in the First, Second and Third Latin Books Ahn's Latin Grammar forms part of a series which has been undertaken with the design to facilitate the study of Latin for begin ners. The author desires to state at the outset that this volume is in no respect a condensation of the First, Second, and Third Latin Books. It is constructed on a plan of its own, and with a twofold object in view: first, to provide a complete grammatical course for those teachers who prefer the synthetic method to the exclusion of the analytic, and secondly, to supply for reference in study a really compendious grammar, which may answer the needs of young scho lars, while it is sufficiently comprehensive and full for more advanced students in a word, the first and also the last grammar in the student's hands. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Grammar IN response to the demand for a Shorter Latin Grammar based on the gildersleeve-lodge work of 1894 the fol lowing manual has been prepared. Historical detail and grammatical exposition intended for advanced students mainly have been discarded, and the phraseology has been simplified wherever it seemed possible without a sacrifice of scientific exactness. Still greater abridgment might have been more in accordance with methods that are in vogue just now; but a grammar that shall serve the average student throughout his course in school or college can not be reduced to a skeleton, and we have not been able to gain our own consent to save space by limiting the illustra tive examples to lean and meaningless sentences, holding as we do that the pupil ought to have something more to remember than a mere group of words. Much attention has been paid to the typography, and by retaining the old section-numbers (as has been done except in the list of verbs, 137 - 165) the parallel use of the larger and the smaller grammars has been facilitated. In conclusion, we desire to express our obligations to Dr. W. Gordon mccabe, Headmaster of the University School, Richmond, Va., who has read the book in proof-sheets and has given us the advantage of his scholarly criticisms and to Mr. Charles W. Bain, Headmaster of the Sewanee Grammar School in the University of the South, who has also read all the proof-sheets and given material assistance in adapting the book to the wants of younger students. By these criticisms and others that have reached us we have endeavored to profit, and it is hoped that a wider sphere pf usefulness awaits this result of our joint labors.
