Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendium of Insanity As an aid to consciousness there is that quality which has been called attention, or the power of concentration, by means of which im prints become fixed and ideas take definite form. It is largely acquired and developed by exercise and mental discipline. An overworked person will sometimes say the mind does not act, by which it may be understood that the ability to apply the faculty of attention and selection is in abeyance or is impaired. It consequently follows that any criticism of it on the assumption, either expressed or implied, that it is, or that it: professes to be, a well-digested, logically-constructed monograph, would be unjust, and hence worthy of deprecation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Insanity Year by year the students to whom I lecture ask me what book on insanity they ought to study, and year by year I have to recommend books which I know to be excellent in themselves, but which I feel are of such bulk and volume as to be out of proportion to the time which students can profitably give to an outlying subject, and to the vast mass of other material which they have to assimilate during their brief curriculum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104-Book of Insanity and Other Mental Diseases This book was primarily intended for the use of students of medicine, as an introduction to the study of insanity, to give them a general notion of' the subject without going much into detail, and incidentally to be of use to them in examinations. In this object it succeeded so far that it became, I am told, the text-book in use in most of the Universities. It was not intended as an advanced book for those who make a special study of insanity, and in this respect also it has not disappointed its author, for the novel doctrines contained in it do not appear to have become known to them yet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Insanity, and Other Disorders Affecting the Mind Permit me to dedicate to you the result of many years' observation and study in researches to which you have devoted a great part of your life - to express, at the same time, a grateful sense of your personal kindness to me, and to pay that homage which is due to the most distinguished writer of his age on the subjects which I have endeavoured to investigate. May I thus be allowed to connect with my work a name which will be handed down to posterity as that of one who, by elucidating the causes of the' most severe of temporal calamities, and the means of its alleviation, has deserved the gratitude of mankind. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Insanity It must be clearly understood, moreover, that no attempt has been made to cover the whole field of insanity. On the contrary, certain sections of that field have been more or less arbitrarily selected, mainly on the ground that they yield fruitful results to psychological methods of investigation. I confidently anticipate that. In the future these methods will have a far wider application, but in the present state of our knowledge it must be frankly admitted that there are whole tracts of insanity in which they have only a very limited utility. This confession is all the more necessary on account of the tendency to unduly extensive generalisation evident in the work of many recent investigators. In View of the enormous complexity of mental processes, and the youthfulness ofpsychology, it is best to realise that progress must inevitably be slow, and that we must be content to feel our way to the scientific laws of the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Insanity The following Hints have been thrown together with the hope that they may be found useful to those medical men who have had no opportunity during their professional education of becoming practically acquainted with Insanity, and whose time is too much occupied to permit them to make a special study of a disease which they are seldom called upon to treat. They are the impressions left upon my mind from a personal acquaintance with upwards of four thousand insane persons, both in public and private asylums, during the last seventeen years, and, together with the directions as to filling up certificates, &c., seem to me to comprise the principal points with which medical men should be familiar. This is an OCR edition with typos. Excerpt from book: CONDITIONS OF RESEARCH IN PSYCHIATRY. IN considering the conditions under which research in psychiatry is likely to be rewarded by success, we are at once met with the query, Have the conscious efforts of man or have accident and necessity heretofore been preponderant factors in fortuitous discoveries? Some philosophers contend that all conscious research is misdirected, wasteful, extravagant and unproductive expenditure of energy, that it is the whole duty of civilization to utilize the discoveries that accidently and spontaneously eventuate in the course of the ordinary affairs of life. There can be little doubt that most of the discoveries which gave man the power to rise from animalism to savagery, from savagery to barbarism and from barbarism to the beginning of civilization, were fortuitous accidents; but thereafter, on account of the complex field of science, and especially as it concerns us, of the complex field of pathology, advances have been made and they may be expected to result only on well-planned and conscious research by well organ, ized and well-trained squads of engineers in research. It is an undoubted fact that the earliest and most conspicuous advances of the human mind into the dark continent of ignorance and of the unknown have been wholly accidental and uncontemplated. Such accidental discoveries are still going on, but it is also a fact that during the last hundred years at least, conscious and purposeful researches have been undertaken and new and valuable discoveries, which never could be- disclosed by any conceivable accident, have been made with the aid of the systematic and orderly arrangement of facts previously discovered by necessity and accident alone. It is said that the gourd or woven reed basket was first covered with clay solely to pr..
