Book excerpt: A number of research studies in the 1980's have examined the aspect of increasing IQ scores from the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R). In this study, the results of the WISC-R and WAIS-R were compared for 20 students currently or previously served in classes for the mentally handicapped in a rural school district in northeast Mississippi. A one-way analysis of variance was utilized to compute the WISC-R and WAIS-R verbal, performance, and full scale mean IQs. The .05 level of confidence was used to determine significance. The results of this study revealed a significant difference. with the WAIS-R yielding higher scores, thereby causing 15 out of 20 of the students to lose eligibility for mentally handicapped services. Possible alternative forms of testing are suggested.

Book excerpt: The classic text--now updated with a new interpretive approach tothe WAIS?-III Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence, the classic text fromAlan Kaufman and Elizabeth Lichtenberger, has consistently providedthe most comprehensive source of information on cognitiveassessment of adults and adolescents. The newly updated ThirdEdition provides important enhancements and additions thathighlight the latest research and interpretive methods for theWAIS?-III. Augmenting the traditional "sequential" and "simultaneous"WAIS?-III interpretive methods, the authors present a new approachderived from Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) theory. This approachcombines normative assessment (performance relative to age peers)with ipsative assessment (performance relative to the person's ownmean level). Following Flanagan and Kaufman's work to develop asimilar CHC approach for the WISC?-IV, Kaufman and Lichtenbergerhave applied this system to the WAIS?-III profile of scores alongwith integrating recent WAIS?-III literature. Four appendices present the new method in depth. In addition to adetailed description, the authors provide a blank interpretiveworksheet to help examiners make the calculations and decisionsneeded for applying the additional steps of the new system, andnorms tables for the new WAIS?-III subtest combinations added inthis approach. Assessing Adolescent and Adult Intelligence remains the premierresource for the field, covering not only the WAIS?-III but alsothe WJ III?, the KAIT, and several brief measures of intelligence,as well as laying out a relevant, up-to-date discussion of thediscipline. The new, theory-based interpretive approach for theWAIS?-III makes this a vital resource for practicing psychologists,as well as a comprehensive text for graduate students.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The primary purpose of the present study was to analyze subtest patterns on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R) in conjunction with three handicapped categories (Mentally Retarded, Specific Learning Disabled, and Seriously Behavior Disordered) and a non-handicapped group of low-achievers to examine whether each group differed significantly from each other group. In addition, an attempt was made to determine if each group had its own distinct profile of relative strengths and weaknesses on the WISC-R. The subjects who participated in the study were drawn from two elementary and a middle school within Riverside School District, a rural community set in northeastern Washington. All the subjects selected were currently enrolled in or previously referred for special education services. Selection criteria for each of the three handicapped groups and the low-achiever group were according to the Washington Administrative Code (1986/87) for education of handicapped children and were previously identified by the schools. The low--achievers did not meet the eligibility requirements for any of the handicapped categories, however, they were students who were having difficulty in the regular classrooms and whose teachers referred for assessment to determine if they were eligible for services. The 37 male and nine female subjects had an average chronological age of ten, ranging from six to fifteen. Their mean Full Scale IQ, excluding the Mentally Retarded group, was 94.7 with a range of 81-107. The mean Full Scale IQ of the Mentally Retarded group was 73, with a range of 66-78. Within each of the groups there was an even distribution according to age, grade, and size (Mentally Retarded N=11, Specific Learning Disabled N=12, Severely Behaviorally Disordered N=12, Low-Achievers N=11). Each of the subjects was randomly assigned to one of three qualified examiners if current WISC-R data were not available in the subject's special education file. The WISC-R was individually administered to each subject. All scores in the study were compiled from subjects' 11 subtest scores, mazes excluded. Three separate two by eleven mixed analyses of variance were used to compare the Specific Learning Disabled, Severely Behaviorally Disordered, and Low-Achiever groups with each other. Multiple comparisons between pairs of means, using the Lindquist (1953) critical difference procedure, was utilized, which employed the error term from each analysis. Since the comparisons among the interaction means were most directly relevant to the hypotheses being tested, multlple comparisons were carried out only among those 11 subtest means. Object Assembly and Block Design, with the Behaviorally Disordered group performing higher than the Low-Achiever group. To provide a more discriminative evaluation of the subtest patterns within each of the subject groups, based only on the variability within their 11 subtest scores, separate one-way analysis of variance were carried out for each of the four groups, as well as obtaining critical difference results. The three handicapped groups obtained a significant variance among tests (MR p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume – now in its second edition – has been completely updated to provide the most comprehensive and accessible handbook of practices and tools for the clinical assessment of child and adolescent intelligence. Designed specifically as a teaching tool, it provides students with an accessible guide to interpretation and applies the same interpretive systems across many tests. It emphasizes the proper interpretation of intelligence tests within the context of a child’s life circumstances and includes several devices to enhance the logical processes of assessment, beginning with test selection and concluding with the reporting of results. In addition, Clinical Assessment of Child and Adolescent Intelligence: - Stresses the importance of the interpretive process over the value of specific tests - Fosters a deeper understanding of the intelligence construct - Emphasizes learning by example, using valuable case studies and vignettes designed to provide students with concrete models to emulate This edition covers all facets of intelligence testing, including detailed explanations of test interpretation, theory, research, and the full-range of testing options for preschoolers through adult clients. New chapters have been introduced on neuropsychological approaches, adolescent and adult intelligence, including coverage of WAIS-III and KAIT, and achievement and intelligence screeners have been added. And although designed primarily as a text for beginning graduate students, the book is also useful as a "refresher" for clinicians who are looking for updated assessment information.
