Book Synopsis Autism as an Executive Disorder by : James Russell
Download or read book Autism as an Executive Disorder written by James Russell and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1997 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism continues to fascinate researchers because it is both debilitating in its effects and complex in its nature and origins. The prevalent theory is that autism is primarily characterised by difficulties in understanding mental concepts, but the contributors to this book present new andcompelling arguments for an alternative theory. Their research points strongly to the idea that autism is primarily a disorder of "executive functions", those involved in the control of action and thought. As such, the book provides a new and controversial perspective on this importantquestion.

Download or read book Mental Retardation written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2002-08-09 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current estimates suggest that between one and three percent of people living in the United States will receive a diagnosis of mental retardation. Mental retardation, a condition characterized by deficits in intellectual capabilities and adaptive behavior, can be particularly hard to diagnose in the mild range of the disability. The U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) provides income support and medical benefits to individuals with cognitive limitations who experience significant problems in their ability to perform work and may therefore be in need of governmental support. Addressing the concern that SSA's current procedures are consistent with current scientific and professional practices, this book evaluates the process used by SSA to determine eligibility for these benefits. It examines the adequacy of the SSA definition of mental retardation and its current procedures for assessing intellectual capabilities, discusses adaptive behavior and its assessment, advises on ways to combine intellectual and adaptive assessment to provide a complete profile of an individual's capabilities, and clarifies ways to differentiate mental retardation from other conditions.
Book Synopsis Lexicon of Psychiatric and Mental Health Terms by :
Download or read book Lexicon of Psychiatric and Mental Health Terms written by and published by . This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concise definitions for some 700 terms used in the diagnosis & classification of mental discorder. Now in its second edition, the lexicon has been revised & expanded to meet the practical need, in clinical work, teaching & research, for an explicit & authoritiative lexis of terms used in the chapter on mental & behavioral disorders of the 10th revision of the INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATION OF DISEASES & RELATED HEALTH PROBLEMS(ICD-10). Most of the terms have been newly defined for the second edition, in line with the extensive revisions incorporated in ICD-10. Each term is defined as precisely & concisedly as possible. Where appropriate, the code number of the ICD-10 category in which the term appears is given as part of the entry. Alternative names, synonyms, & near-synonyms are also included. The lexicon represents a major step toward the achievement of an internationally-accepted nomenclature for mental disorders & should find wide application in clinical, teaching & research settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This electronic version has been made available under a Creative Commons (BY-NC-ND) open access license. This book is available as an open access ebook under a CC-BY-NC-ND licence. What is autism and where has it come from? Increased diagnostic rates, the rise of the 'neurodiversity' movement, and growing autism journalism, have recently fuelled autism's fame and controversy. The metamorphosis of autism is the first book to explain our current fascination with autism by linking it to a longer history of childhood development. Drawing from a staggering array of primary sources, Bonnie Evans traces autism back to its origins in the early twentieth century and explains why the idea of autism has always been controversial and why it experienced a 'metamorphosis' in the 1960s and 1970s. Evans takes the reader on a journey of discovery from the ill-managed wards of 'mental deficiency' hospitals, to high-powered debates in the houses of parliament, and beyond. The book will appeal to a wide market of scholars and others interested in autism.
