Book excerpt: The purpose of this causal comparative study was to determine the impact of the implementation of NCLB on the performance levels of gifted students relative to those of non-gifted students. The study involved the 2001, 2002, 2008, and 2009 Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) results of 1,978 middle grades students from a school in rural Northwest Georgia. The analysis included comparing the Mann-Whitney statistics, two-sample independent z-test statistics, and the percentage of improvement in performance levels of the gifted and non-gifted students, as measured by the CRCT in reading, language arts, and mathematics. The findings revealed that, since the implementation of NCLB, both the gifted and non-gifted students experienced a statistically significant increase in their performance levels on the CRCT. However, the difference between the percentages of improvement in the performance levels of the gifted students relative to those of the non-gifted students was statistically non-significant.

Book Synopsis Meeting the needs of gifted students in the general education classroom in language arts by : Kelly Fields
Download or read book Meeting the needs of gifted students in the general education classroom in language arts written by Kelly Fields and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The needs of many gifted readers are not being met in the general education classroom. Most gifted readers spend the majority of their time in the general education classroom which places the responsibility of meeting their individual needs upon the classroom teacher. Many teachers either do not know what to do to help these students who are already performing above grade level. Gifted readers who are not challenged often end up bored, frustrated, or become underachievers. Differentiation the curriculum and instruction can help ward off these effects and help gifted readers develop a more positive attitude towards learning and school. The use of curriculum compacting, than replacing mastered objectives with alternative activities, such as independent study, can help to foster positive attitudes. This project looks at the current state of gifted education in reading and examines the use of differentiation as a viable way to address the needs of gifted readers. In this project a teacher in-service and handbook were created to help general education teachers learn about the needs of gifted students ways to differentiate in order to meet these needs in their classrooms. The project’s success will be determined by a survey completed by the teachers at the beginning, end, and six weeks after the in-service in order to ascertain what the teachers have learned and how they are using the new information to differentiate in their own classrooms.
