Book Synopsis Taxation in Asia by : Jorge Martinez-Vazquez
Download or read book Taxation in Asia written by Jorge Martinez-Vazquez and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents an overview of tax policy and tax administration issues---how countries in Asia and the Pacific compare with the rest of the world in main taxes, revenue collections, tax morale, and others. The implications of reducing reliance on customs tariff revenues and of using the value-added tax on a broader basis, especially in the services sector, have been analyzed. This note suggests an agenda for reform by discussing whether there is space to increase national revenue collections, how to improve tax administration and enforcement, and how these reforms interact with the decentralization paradigm. The individual country performances, the extent of the shadow economy, and lessons on reforming tax administration have been referenced.

Book Synopsis Do Asia and Pacific Countries Compete in the Corporate Tax Rates? by : Weihong Huang
Download or read book Do Asia and Pacific Countries Compete in the Corporate Tax Rates? written by Weihong Huang and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do governments in the emerging Asia and Pacific region independently set their corporate tax rates? The answer is no. This paper contributes to the growing empirical tax competition literature by (i) generating a predictable tax reaction function within the new tax competition framework considering the "lumpy" nature of economic geography; and (ii) estimating the parameters of the national level tax reaction functions using panel data of 14 countries in the Asia and Pacific region between 1980 and 2007. We find that consistent with the model-evidence of strategic interaction is present among governments in this region and market integration plays the catalyst role. Country size has a positive effect on the corporate tax rate setting but is offset when the openness degree deepens. Furthermore, the mobile capital and immobile labor are possibly substitutes implied by the insignificant coefficient on the top individual income tax rate considering the effect of unemployment. Overtime, contrary to our expectation, countries in the Asia and Pacific region seem to become less competitive among themselves.

It stands out by its sheer scale, with internet users far exceeding numbers in other regions. This facilitates e-commerce in markets that are large by international standards, supported by innovative payment systems and featuring major corporate players, including a number of large, home-grown, highly digitalized businesses (tech giants) that rival US multinational enterprises (MNEs) in size. Opportunity for future growth exists, as a significant population share remains unconnected.
