Book excerpt: Educators are increasingly focused on ensuring that students experience a rigorous curriculum in high school and graduate college and career ready. One way of introducing rigorous course work is to have students take college-level work, often in the form of either an APʼ course and exam or a dual enrollment course. This study compared the outcomes of students who participated in either program and graduated high school in 2006. The outcomes investigated were four-year college enrollment, persistence at a four-year institution, graduation in four years, and graduation in six years, as well as first-year college grades. The results indicated that AP students who had obtained at least one score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam considerably outperformed on all examined outcomes except for four-year college enrollment, which was highest for students who had taken a dual enrollment course affiliated with a four-year college. AP students whose highest exam score was less than 3 performed as well or better than did students who took a dual enrollment course affiliated with a two year college for all outcomes. AP students whose highest exam score was lower than 3 outperformed students who took a dual enrollment course affiliated with a four-year college on some outcomes and underperformed on others. Previous research provides evidence that participation in AP, and subsequent success on AP Exams, is positively related to various college outcomes including an increased likelihood of graduating from college and better preparation for the academic rigor of the college classroom. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of the value of advanced course work in high school in preparing students for higher education success by investigating the relationships between participation and performance in AP courses and exams, dual enrollment courses, and regular courses and four different college outcomes including first-year subject-specific GPA, final subject-specific GPA, calendar time to bachelor's degree, and credit hours attempted. Results indicated that higher performance on AP Exams was related to higher college performance in the subject area, as well as fewer credit hours taken to bachelor's degree. Most dual enrollment course grades were at a C or higher, and students taking these courses tended to graduate from college in fewer calendar terms than other groups. Book excerpt: Performance was examined for five cohorts of 1998-2002 Texas public high school graduates through their first year and 1998-2001 cohorts through their fourth year of Texas public higher education. Student performance on college outcomes included (a) first- and fourth-year grade point averages (GPAs), (b) first- and fourth-year credit hours earned, and (c) four-year graduation status. Outcomes were compared across students who varied by three types of APʼ (course only, exam only, and both course and exam) and two types of non-AP (dual enrollment only and other course only) experiences in high school. Phase 1 analyses addressed each of seven AP Exams separately. Within each cohort year and within each cohort related to the specific AP Exam, students in the various AP and non-AP groups were matched on ability (ranked SATʼ score category) and free or reduced-price lunch (FRPL) participation status. Students in each of the separately analyzed AP English Language and Composition, AP English Literature and Composition, AP Calculus AB, and AP U.S. History course and exam groups, for example, significantly outperformed their respective AP course only, dual enrollment, and other course peers on the GPA, graduation rate, and most credit hours outcomes. Phase 2 analyses aggregated AP course/ exam and non-AP experiences, taking into account SAT score category and FRPL status. Students who took AP courses and exams significantly outperformed students who took AP courses only and other courses only on all outcomes in all years and, in general, exceeded AP Exam only and dual enrollment only group performances on the outcomes. They also graduated from college within four years at consistently higher rates than those in the other groups. Results provide strong evidence of benefits to students who participate in both AP courses and exams in terms of higher GPAs, credit hours earned, and four-year graduation rates. However, there is little evidence that compares how they fare in terms of improving college access and success. Using data from two cohorts of all high school students in Florida and controlling for schools' and students' characteristics (including prior achievement), this study examines the relative power of AP and DE in predicting students' college access and success. The study finds that both AP and DE are strongly associated with positive outcomes, but the enrollment outcomes are not the same for both programs. DE students are more likely than AP students to go to college after high school, but they are less likely to first enroll in a four-year college. Despite this difference in initial enrollment, the difference between DE and AP in terms of bachelor's degree attainment is much smaller and not statistically significant for some model specifications. In addition, the effect of DE is driven by courses taken at the local community college campus; there is no effect for DE courses taken at the high school. While this is promising, a notable amount of students do not attain a degree. This scenario can create major consequences for the United States as global competiveness requires a workforce that possesses a postsecondary degree. Dual enrollment is a program that has been seen to answer the need for more postsecondary graduates. Despite the robust literature that suggests the positive effects for students who participate in dual enrollment, limited research exists on the effects of dual enrollment on the institution. Therefore, this study attempted to fill the gap in the literature by examining the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. The independent variable was participation in dual enrollment and the dependent variables were persistence rates and degree completion. The population consisted of 5,251 first-time, full-time students in the Mississippi Community College System. Of this number, 741 had taken at least 1 dual enrollment course between the fall of 2010 and the spring of 2015, and 4,510 had no previous dual enrollment experience at all. A Chi-square test was used for both research questions. Results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference in persistence rates when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to maintain consistent enrollment (69%) at the community college than students who had no previous dual enrollment experience (45%). There is also a significant relationship between students attaining a degree in a timely manner when comparing dual enrolled students to non-dual enrolled students. First-time, full-time students who had previous dual enrollment experience were more likely to earn a degree in 3 years (61%) than students who did not participate in dual enrollment (35%). The effect size for both research questions was small. While the outcomes of this study are positive, it is imperative to continue to examine the effects of dual enrollment on an institution. Policy differences at each of the Mississippi community colleges could render different outcomes for the students and ultimately affect the institution.

The study compared the college outcomes of students who took both an AP course and exam in a particular subject to other groups of students who did not. When making these comparisons, students were grouped according to their SAT scores and socio-economic status. The study reported that students who took both the AP course and the AP exam had higher college GPAs, earned more credits, and had higher graduation rates than students who took only the AP course or a non-AP course in the same subject area. The study reported no differences between students who took both the course and the exam and students who took only the exam. What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) does not consider these results to be conclusive because the study does not provide evidence that the students were initially equivalent. The reported differences might reflect initial differences in the types of students who take AP courses and exams rather than the effect of AP courses and exams on college outcomes. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present research was to compare the college performance of three groups of Advanced Placement Programʼ (APʼ) students who took the AP Exam and either earned course credit, did not earn course credit, or earned course credit but elected to take the entry-level college course to three groups of Non-AP student groups matched on SAT scores and high school rank in 10 AP subject areas. In addition, the performance of the AP groups was also compared to matched groups of students who were concurrently enrolled in a college course in the same subject area as the AP students. Students' records for four entering classes (1998-2001) at the University of Texas at Austin were analyzed. The college outcome measures included first and overall credit hours taken, first and overall GPAs, and subject area credit hours and GPAs. In addition, sequent course grades were analyzed in those subject areas where there was a required sequent course. The results showed AP students who earn course credit consistently outperform their matched Non-AP group on most of the college outcome measures. The findings also revealed AP students take significantly more credit hours their first year than the concurrently enrolled students. The results of this study support the generalization of previous research to the much expanded AP Program.
