Book excerpt: The nursing profession has been identified as the largest healthcare profession using the internet and its requests to participate in continuing education (CE) are increasing. This project addressed an identified need to create, implement, and evaluate an educational intervention to measure knowledge gains and retention between a face-to-face and web-based course for Registered Nurses (RNs). Quantitative methods were used to address the research problem for RNs that treat the geriatric population. A curriculum for an oral health CE course was developed for RNs that treat the geriatric population and presented in a web-based and face-to-face course. The same oral health education material was used for both CE formats. A literature review demonstrating effective curricular, instructional and evaluative strategies for continuing professional healthcare education as well as a review of several theories in the psychology of adult learning and its application to continuing professional healthcare education was conducted. A multiple question test was developed and the same test questions, ordered differently, were given to RNs as the pre-test, post-test and one week retention test.

Book excerpt: Online education in the United States has seen dramatic growth for the past decade, outpacing any other growth in higher education. The concurrent mixed-methods study that was conducted for this research used data from a survey geology course taught in both environments, online and traditional face-to-face. The quantitative research focused on comparing student performance in an online course relative to the same face-to-face course, while the qualitative research investigated how students described their experiences taking an online class. Previous work in online education has been limited by relatively small sample sizes, conducting studies over just one semester, comparing dissimilar courses in one study, considering few of the STEM disciplines, and, of the limited studies with GPA as a covariate, using self-reported GPA rather than actual GPA. The quantitative analysis of this study compared student performance in online (N=171) and face-to face (N=1266) environments using data from the same STEM class over five years, with actual GPA as the covariate. ANCOVAs were calculated, and results showed that, overall, students performed better in the face-to-face class than in the online class, and this difference was more pronounced with students whose GPAs were 3.0 and lower. OLS regression was also conducted to identify predictors contributing to student success in the online classroom – GPA, course load, and student credit hours were the only significant factors predicting online performance. For the qualitative component of this study, issues related to student satisfaction were explored by conducting a focus group from four students enrolled in the online STEM course. Themes emerging from the discussion included interaction, technology, self-regulated learning practices, convenience, and course structure, with interaction as the most prominent theme. These findings help to explain the quantitative findings of why students with higher GPAs perform better – they do so, in part, because they have frequent interaction with the content despite the negative impact of the distance-based environment. Research, such as this study, is important in that identifying effective pedagogy promotes learning, particularly when the learning is done at a distance such as the online environment.

Book excerpt: With the increasing use of the computer and the Internet in the training sector, there are constant debates about the effectiveness of e-learning versus traditional face-to-face (FTF) education since the early 1990s. However, limited empirical studies have been conducted for this purpose in the field of Continuing Professional Education (CPE), on which the flexibility in time and place of e-learning have made and will potentially make a greater impact. Even fewer such studies were situated in a non-academic context for professions other than nursing or healthcare. Moreover, the learners' voice is often absent in the debates. This exploratory study was designed to a) obtain professionals' perceptions concerning the effectiveness of online versus FTF CPE courses from two pedagogical aspects of adult learning: professional knowledge and practice development and technology context link, and b) assess if professionals' perceptions varied as a function of their sociocultural and professional contexts. Self-reported perception data were collected through an online survey. Professionals (n=399) from Texas Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) participated in the study. The professional units where the participants worked included Fire Service, Utilities and Public Work, Homeland Security, Safety and Health, Public Safety and Security, Technology, and Search and Rescue. Exploratory factor analysis (Principle Component Analysis), descriptive statistics, t-tests, multivariate analysis and ANOVAs were run for the purpose of data analysis. It was found that the professionals who participated in the study (a) perceived that online CPE courses were less effective in enhancing their professional knowledge and practice development when compared to traditional FTF CPE courses; (b) perceived that online CPE courses were more effective in linking what they had learned to technology contexts that they were in; (c) perceived that online CPE courses were less effective than FTF courses in general; (d) who were female perceived online CPE courses' ability in improving their professional knowledge and practice less negatively than male participants; and (e) who were firefighters favored the online CPE courses compared to professionals from the other units in TEEX, while the professionals from Safety and Health were most negative about the effectiveness of online CPE courses. The responses to the two open-ended questions provided information on the measures recommended by surveyed professionals to improve the effectiveness of online and FTF CPE courses.

The purpose of this study was to explore the perceived learning experiences of associate degree nursing students using electronic textbooks. A qualitative research design using a descriptive survey and focus groups was used to explore the perceived learning experiences of first semester associate degree nursing students using an electronic textbook. Survey findings revealed that students did not perceive electronic textbooks as a useful learning resource. The students' perceptions of ease of use were inconclusive. Focus groups reported advantages and disadvantages, adjustments, concerns, and suggestions about using electronic textbooks for learning. The importance of tailoring an online problem-based learning course to reflect educators' philosophies and values in nursing emerged as an important theme from the interview responses. Overall, the participants suggested that an ideal environment would blend both face-to-face and online elements and that fewer elements would be offered in the first 2 years of the nursing program. They described a hybrid model of problem-based learning in which the online component could be used to support face-to-face sessions.
