Book excerpt: The countermovement jump (CMJ) is a practical, reliable and valid test used to measure lower-body power. The CMJ is frequently utilized by strength and conditioning professionals working with athletes, given its relationship to a multitude of performance variables associated with success in sports. PURPOSE: To examine characteristics of CMJ performance between differing levels of competition. A secondary aim was to report descriptive data on jump performance for NAIA and NCAA Division I male and female athletes. METHODS: Archival data for 275 student athletes from two NCAA division 1 universities (NCAA DI; males = 84, females = 74) and one NAIA university (NAIA; males = 66, females = 51) were utilized for this analysis. The CMJ was performed utilizing a dual single axis (Pasco PS 2141 plates, sampling rate 1000hz unfiltered) force platform system. A 2 x 2 multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to determine whether significant differences in the three dependent variables of VJ height (cm) calculated by flight time, concentric RPD-100ms, and peak power existed between athletes at different playing levels. A discriminant function analysis (DFA) was the used to investigate how the three dependent variables or outcome variables may discriminate the participants based on a combined variable (sex and competition level). Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to determine if select upper-extremity strength and power field tests, and the test battery, predict pole vault performance in female pole vaulters. There is very little research on female pole vault athletes, specifically non-elite athletes. Field tests previously shown to be predictive of performance in males were examined to determine if they were also predictive for females. Four tests were used (8 lb backwards medicine ball (MB) throw, 3 m seated rope pull, three pull-ups for time, and maximum pull-ups) to determine if pole vault performance (season personal record for each athlete) could be predicted by the test results. Nine collegiate female pole vaulters were tested. Pearson correlation and regression analysis were used to determine if there were relationships between the tests and pole vault performance and if the tests could predict performance. Correlation coefficients revealed that the two pull-up tests were highly related (r = -0.811), so maximum pull-ups was removed from the remainder of the results. Regression analysis revealed that 82.6% of the variance in personal record was accounted for by the three predictors, 8 lb backward MB throw, 3m seated rope pull, and three pull-ups for time (p = 0.024). Linear regression analysis showed that 71.8% of variance in pole vault performance was accounted for by the test battery (p = 0.004). Book excerpt: "High risk neuromuscular control strategies during landing and cutting maneuvers are thought to be a major contributing factor to the 6 times greater risk of ACL injury in female athletes compared to male athletes. However, female dancers who have similar fitness capabilities and perform many of the same cutting and landing tasks as female athletes are less likely to display high risk neuromuscular strategies, have similar neuromuscular control strategies as male dancers, and are 3- 5 times less likely to suffer an ACL injury compared to female athletes. While multiple theories have been proposed to explain this protection in female dancers, preliminary research suggests female dancers may adopt a more protective neuromuscular control strategies as a result of their training practices. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to comprehensively compare neuromuscular control strategies in collegiate female dancers and collegiate female field athletes to determine if female dancers demonstrate more protective neuromuscular control patterns during functional tasks as characterized by 1) decreased vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF), 2) quicker stabilization of the anterior-posterior and medial-lateral ground reaction force, 3) smaller distance between center of mass (COM) and location of center of pressure (COP), 4) decreased knee valgus, 5) increased ankle plantar flexion, 6) decreased knee extensor moment, and 7) quicker muscular activation. Forty collegiate females, 20 dancers (age= 20.4 ± 1.9 yrs, height= 164.8 ± 6.1 cm, weight= 63.5 ± 8.8kg, experience= 14.3 ± 3.9 yrs) and 20 athletes (age= 19.4± .9 yrs, height= 169.3 ± 7.1 cm, weight= 69.8 ± 13.0 kg, experience= 12.2 ± 2.9 yrs) matched on year of experience were measured for postural control during a dynamic forward hop stabilization task; hip, knee and ankle joint neuromechanics during a planned double leg drop landing; and reflex response characteristics during an unplanned lower extremity perturbation. Results revealed no significant differences between female athletes and dancers on muscle reflex time following a functional perturbation or in their time to stabilization during the dynamic balance test. During the drop jump landing, dancers versus athletes landed with lower vGRF [F (3, 33) = 3.44, p = .03, ES = .24], position their COM more anteriorly [F (1,38) = 4.8, p=.03], moved through a greater sagittal plane ROM [F (3, 36) = 4.6, p=.008] primarily driven by greater ankle joint excursion, and move through equal frontal plane motion at the hip and knee [F (2, 37) = 1.6 p=.23, Partial Eta Squared ()=.08]. The greater sagittal plane excursions values were largely a product of a more extended posture at ground contact and did not result in larger peak values. These findings suggest that dancers and athletes may have similar abilities to respond to postural perturbations, but that female dancers may demonstrate some elements of more protective neuromuscular control strategies during planned movements as a result of their training practices. Book excerpt: This study investigated differences in movement technique and ankle range of motion in female collegiate basketball, soccer, and volleyball athletes and the potential need to customize injury prevention programs athletes based on sport-based differences. Forty-five collegiate female athletes volunteered to participate in this study (age=20 ± 2 years, mass=68.7 ±11.1kg, height=171.6 ±9.4cm). Athletes were members of a university basketball, soccer, or volleyball team. Ankle dorsiflexion range of motion was measured in non-weight bearing in knee extension, non-weight bearing in knee flexion, and weight bearing lunge test. A jump-landing task was scored using the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) was also performed. We did not observe a significant difference between sports for the composite LESS score (P> 0.05). A greater proportion of basketball participants exhibited the â€knee flexion at initial contact†error than the two other sports (P=0.043). There were no significant differences between ACL or ankle injury history and LESS score or ankle ROM (P>0.05). Participants with less than five degrees of NWB-KF ankle dorsiflexion had significantly higher LESS scores (P=0.001). Twenty-two of forty-five participants exhibited with high injury risk scores, as measured by the Landing Error Scoring System. The findings reveal an association between less ankle dorsiflexion and poor lower body movement patterns. These results indicate the potential importance of incorporating ankle mobility exercises in training programs for collegiate female athletes to decrease the incidence of lower extremity injury.

Book excerpt: Abstract: PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the magnitude of isokinetic strength differences between high school and masters level rowers. A secondary purpose was to determine the magnitude of isokinetic strength difference between male and female rowers. MATERIALS/METHODS: Thirteen volunteers between the ages of 15 and 54 who were members of a crew team (either high school or club) participated in this study. Subjects included both males and females and were obtained through convenience and snowball sampling methods. Inclusion criteria included: age of 60 years or younger, subjects must row 2 or more times per week during the in-season and must row 2 or more times per week or exercise at least 90 minutes per week during the off-season. Exclusion criteria included: lower extremity injury occurring within 6 months prior to data collection, lower extremity orthopedic surgery within a year prior to data collection or a serious medical condition that may place themselves or others at risk. Each subject completed a demographics/medical questionnaire and informed consent form. At the time of data collection, an investigator reviewed the forms to determine the subject's eligibility. Once cleared for participation, the subject's height, weight and blood pressure was measured. The subject completed a five-minute warm up on a cycle ergometer and stretches. The subject was then positioned on the isokinetic dynamometer and completed the testing protocol. Quadriceps and hamstrings peak torque and quadriceps/hamstring ratio was measured at angular velocities of 60, 180 and 240 degrees/second (deg/sec). Finally, the subject completed a cool down, which mimicked the warm up. RESULTS: No significant difference was found between male masters and high school subjects for hamstrings mean peak torque/body weight at 60 (t= -0.98, p=0.71), 180 (t=0.55, p=1.19) or 240 deg/sec (t=0.18, p=1.72), for quadriceps peak torque/body weight at 60 (t= -0.08, p=1.87), 180 (t=0.29, p=1.56) and 240 deg/sec (t=-0.05, p=1.92), or for quadriceps/hamstring ratio at 60 (t=0.64, p=1.08), 180 (t=1.28, p=0.47) and 240 deg/sec (t=1.06, p=0.64). Between male and female masters rowers, there was a significant difference found for hamstring mean peak torque/body weight at angular velocities of 180 (t=3.32, p=0.04) and 240 deg/sec (t=4.33, p=0.02). There was also a significant difference found for quadriceps mean peak torque/body weight at angular velocities of 180 (t=5.78, p=0.004) and 240 (t=4.82, p=O.OI) deg/sec. No significant difference was found at 60 deg/sec for either quadriceps (t=3.02, p=0.06) or hamstring (t= 2.03, p=0.20) peak torque/body weight. There was no significant difference found between male and female masters rowers for quadriceps/hamstrings ratio at 60 (t= 0.37, p=1.49), 180 (t=0.54, p=1.23) or 240 deg/sec (t=0.28, p=1.58). A post study power analysis indicated that only comparisons between males and females for quadriceps peak torque/body weight at all three speeds and hamstring peak torque/body weight at 180 and 240 degrees/sec achieved a power of 0.80 or higher. All other comparisons failed to reach a power of .80. CONCLUSIONS: The magnitude of differences varied greatly between subjects. The results of this study are consistent with the literature regarding the strength differences among men and women. Due to the small sample size of participants (along with other limitations), further research is warranted to be able to generalize the results of this study to a larger population. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: It is important for physical therapists, athletic trainers, coaches and athletes to be aware of the physiological changes with occur with age and the possible effects related to function and performance.
