However, levels of life satisfaction, especially low levels of life satisfaction, can have a direct effect on health. Low levels of life satisfaction cause an increase in self-reported stress. Inversely, high levels of stress cause a decrease in life satisfaction. This decrease in life satisfaction is associated with poor mental and physical health outcomes. A majority of student-athlete healthcare is centered around the physical aspects of health, with mental health just recently becoming a concern. It was apparent through the research for this study that life satisfaction scores can be a good indicator and predictor of possible deficits in both. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare the life satisfaction levels of collegiate football players competing at the Division I AA (DI AA) and Division III (DIII) levels. Satisfaction with life scores were compared between the two divisions with the hypothesis that higher perceived stress levels at the Division I AA level lead to lower Satisfaction with Life scores. The secondary hypothesis being that those experiencing lower levels of perceived control would also report lower life satisfaction. Collegiate football players from Linfield College (DIII) and Portland State University (DI AA) institutions were contacted via email and asked to complete a survey via Survey Monkey.

Book excerpt: This study investigated eight possible predictors of satisfaction levels in smallcollege football players. The sample (N = 442) included eight nonscholarship football programs from the NCAA Division III or NAIA classifications. Measures included Zhang's Revised Version of Chelladurai's Leadership Scale for Sport, and a seven-item subscale of the Scale of Athlete Satisfaction. The six subscales of the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport each yielded a significant linear relationship with the satisfaction outcome measure: social support (I= .696), situational consideration (I= .665), positive feedback (r = .654), teaching and instruction (I= .627), democratic behaviors (I = .501), and autocratic behaviors (I= -.372). Minimal correlations were found between satisfaction and the two other predictors evaluated: each team's win/loss percentage (I= .164) and each player's estimated amount of playing time (r = .121). With the large sample size, these two modest correlations were also statistically significant. However, as neither accounted for more than 2% of the total variance in satisfaction levels, they are not likely to have practical significance. The predictors were also evaluated via stepwise multiple regression analysis to assess which combination(s) would account for more of the overall variance. Unfortunately, a mild case of multicollinearity made it difficult to attribute relative importance to the predictors. For example, the situational consideration subscale recorded especially high correlations with several of the other Revised Leadership Scale for Sport subscales. Overall, results indicate that specific coaching behaviors are more associated with player satisfaction in small-college players than are reported in previous samples of other types of athletes. As such, coaches are encouraged to provide support for players in off-the-field endeavors, offer positive feedback on performance goals, and combine knowledge of the sport with the ability to make adjustments in strategies and coaching behaviors. A comparison of the current sample of nonscholarship, small-college football players and a sample of full-scholarship (NCAA Division I-AA) football players revealed several interesting differences. In the current sample, the correlations between social support and satisfaction, and democratic behavior and satisfaction, were substantially higher. Additionally, a much stronger negative relationship existed between autocratic coaching behaviors and satisfaction among small-college players.

Book excerpt: PURPOSE: This study examined neuromuscular fatigue management from a daily undulating practice periodization plan during an NCAA Division III collegiate football season. METHODS: Thirty university football players participated in this study during the first seven weeks of the competition season. Triaxial accelerometers were worn at every practice to track mechanical load. Neuromuscular fatigue was assessed through loaded countermovement jump and perceptual fatigue from wellness variables on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. One-way analyses of variance with repeated measures determined significant differences between days in all variables, and Cohen's d determined effect sizes. RESULTS: Significant differences in mechanical load were identified between all days of the practice week. All jump variables had trivial to small improvements from Monday to Friday. Perceptions of fatigue, soreness, and overall well-being showed moderate to large negative effect sizes from Monday to Wednesday; however, these values improved from Wednesday to Friday so that Friday had trivial or small negative effect sizes when compared to Monday. CONCLUSION: Neuromuscular and perceptual fatigue were successfully managed throughout the practice week.

Excerpt: This is a list of undefeated NCAA Division I football teams, which describes all teams that finished a college football season in the NCAA's Division I, or historic equivalent, without any losses. NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) is currently the highest division of play in college football. However this nomenclature and these categories of divisional play have only existed since 2006 and 1978, respectively. Prior to the formation of the NCAA in 1906, there was no differentiation between the level of play from one college to another, and thus all intercollegiate teams can be thought of as having played in the same division. Likewise, even after the formation of the NCAA, there was no differentiation into divisions until 1956, when play was separated in the upper "University" division and lower "Collegiate" division. In 1973, a three division reorganization occurred placing teams into NCAA Division I (highest), Division II, or Division III (lowest). In 1978, Division I was further subdivided into Division I-A (highest) and Division I-AA. In 2006, these subdivisions were renamed Division I...

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Recent data indicates that college student athletes are graduating at higher rates than their non-student athlete peers; however, among student athletes in general, revenue sport student athletes are well below other college sport student athletes in terms of academic performance. One variable that has shown to have a connection with academic performance among college student athletes is academic motivation. An area within academic motivational research that has not been investigated is how a revenue sport student athlete’s time commitment to their sport (competition and non-competition semester) influences their academic motivation. Additionally, the large majority of research assessing academic motivation among college student athletes analyzed academic motivation at one point in time rather than throughout a time period. Conversely, this study examined academic motivation several times within an academic year, rather than at a single point in time. The study also aimed to determine if academic motivation among NCAA Division I football players is significantly different during their competition semester compared to their non-competition semester and if academic motivation changed from month to month within each semester. The researcher created a survey entitled the College Student‐Athlete Academic Motivation Survey (CSAAM-S) which examined academic motivation among 75 NCAA Division I football players during three months within a given semester. Using a repeated measures ANOVA, it was discovered that the football players had higher levels of academic motivation within their non-competition semester (Spring 2013) compared to their competition semester (Fall 2012). Also, differences were found in academic motivation for each month within the competition semester and the non-competition semester. Additionally, race/ethnicity, athletic standing, and scholarship type were also found to yield different levels of academic motivation among the football players. From a practical standpoint, investigating academic motivation through moments of time rather than a single moment of time can lead to a better understanding of the concept of academic motivation. Results from the study will be noteworthy in providing more information to campus leaders and athletic department administrators in order to develop, implement, and better time academic motivational programs for NCAA Division I football players.
