Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to identify significant differences in body composition, body cathexis, and attitudes toward obesity of women in various age groups involved in different levels of physical exercise. A total of 216 women, ranging in age from 17 to 64, took part in this study. They were classified into three age groups: col legeage, beyond college-age, and middle-aged, then further divided into three exercise categories: very active, moderately active, and relatively inactive. All subjects completed the Physical Activity and Body Cathexis Survey. Then the subjects submitted themselves to a series of skinfold fat measurement. In determining the subjects' feelings toward their bodies, the Secord and Jourard's Body Cathexis Scale (1953) was utilized to collect the data. Bray's Obesity Attitude Scale (1973) was employed to investigate the subjects' attitudes toward obesity. The prediction equation developed by Jackson et al. (1980) was used to determine the subjects' body density. The measurements were taken at triceps, thigh, and suprailium skinfolds. The percentage of body fat was derived from the formula of Siri's (1961). The results indicated that the middle-aged women had a higher percentage of body fat and lower amount of lean body mass than the beyond college-age women. There was, however, no significant difference between the body composition of the col lege-age and the beyond college-age women. Different levels of physical activity performed by women had significant effects on their body fat percentage and their body cathexis. Subjects in the very active level of physical exercise showed the lowest percentage of body fat and the most positive attitudes toward their bodies. Attitudes toward obesity between women, young or old, exercising or not exercising, were not significantly different. Women's obesity attitudes were not affected by either age or levels of physical activity.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the self-body cathexis of obese women and their attitudes toward physical activity. Fifty inventories were used for the research in this project. The volunteer subjects' ages ranged from 18 to 45 with a mean age of 28.9 years. The subjects" weight ranged from 20 percent to 120 percent over desirable weight. The females were chosen on the basis of their current weight being 20 percent or more higher than their desirable weight, according to the chart developed by the Build and Blood Pressure Study (48). The measuring devices used were the Jourard and Secord Self-Body Cathexis Inventory and the Kenyon Attitude Toward Physical Activity Inventory. The data from the inventories were statistically analyzed using primarily the Pearson product moment correlation. The .05 level of significance was selected for rejecting, the null hypotheses. The results of the study revealed that the obese women surveyed had average feelings of satisfaction concerning their self and body images. These women had a highly significant positive relationship between their body and their self image. The women in this study who weighed less had a more positive body image. Also, the less the women weighed the more positive their attitude toward physical activity. In general these obese women believed that the positive aspects of physical activity included catharsis, a social experience, an ascetic experience, an improvement of one's health and fitness and the pursuit of vertigo. They did not believe that physical activity was an aesthetic experience. Those women who believed that physical activity was a social experience or to improve one's health and fitness also believed it was for the purpose of catharsis. There were no significant relationships between their attitude toward physical activity and their self or body cathexis.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of following either the Curves® Fitness and Weight Management Plan or the Weight Watchers® Momentum Plan on body composition and markers of health and fitness in previously sedentary obese women. Fifty-one women (age 35±8 yrs; height 163±7 cm; weight 90±1 kg; BMI 34±5 kg/m2; 47±7% body fat) were randomized to participate in the Curves® (C) or Weight Watchers® (W) weight loss programs for 16-wks. Participants in the C group (n=24) followed a 1,200 kcal/d diet for 1-wk; 1,500 kcal/d diet for 3 wks (~30%:45% CHO:PRO); and 2,000 kcals/d for 2-wks (45:30) and repeated this diet while participating in a supervised Curves® with Zumba program 3-d-wk. Remaining subjects (n=27) followed the W point-based diet program, received weekly group counseling, and were encouraged to exercise. Body composition, anthropometrics, resting energy expenditure (REE), lipid biomarkers, and hormone concentrations were assessed at 0, 4, 10, and 16 weeks. Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise capacity and upper and lower body isotonic strength and endurance were assessed at 0 and 16 weeks. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measures. MANOVA analysis of body composition data revealed overall time (Wilks' Lamda p=0.001) and time by diet effects (Wilks0́9 Lamda p=0.003). Subjects in both groups lost a similar amount of total mass (C -2.4±2.0, -4.1±3.4, -5.1±3.9; W -2.3±2.3, -4.5±3.0, -5.5±4.6 kg, p=0.78). However, subjects in the C group tended to have a greater reduction in percent body fat (C -3.3±5.2, -3.2±4.6, -4.7±5.4; W 0.6±6.7, -0.6±8.3, -1.4±8.1%, p=0.10) and body fat mass (C -3.9±5.5, -4.6±5.3, -6.4±5.9; W -0.4±5.7, -2.1±6.7, -2.9±7.8 kg, p=0.09), while maintaining FFM (C 1.5±4.3, 0.52±3.7, 1.3±4.0; W -1.8±5.4, -2.4±5.8, -2.5±5.1, p=0.01). While both groups had increases cardiovascular fitness, the C group experienced improvements in upper body muscular endurance (C 1.4±3.9; W -1.2±2.4 repetitions, p=0.006). Both groups experienced improvements in lipid biomarkers; however, only the C group experienced a moderate increase in HDL-c. Results indicate that participants following the C program experienced more favorable changes in body composition and markers of fitness and health than participants in the W program.
