Marty Sapp presents the various cognitive and behavioral theories of test anxiety along with instruments for measuring test anxiety. He integrates statistical methodology, measurement, and research designs with actual research situations that occur within the test anxiety field. In addition, the SPSS codes for conducting sample reliability and validity are provided along with the codes for finding confidence intervals around population reliability measures. Like the previous edition, the logic of structural equations modeling is presented with the EQS structural equations program. Many researchers view test anxiety as existing of factors such as Sarasons’s four-factor model or Spielberger’s two-factor model. Both models can be easily analyzed by EQS. In terms of treatment, affective, cognitive, behavioral, hypnosis, systematic desensitization, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and the Eye-Movement Technique (EMT) are presented. This book integrates applied research designs and statistical and measurement methodology that frequently occur in the test anxiety literature, but the methodological treatment of research is nonmathematical. Finally, extensive discussions of treatments for test anxiety are provided.

Book excerpt: There has been an increase in American college students reporting symptoms of depression over the last ten years. This review of literature represents an investigation of the correlates and possible interventions. Key terms were used in the search for literature, such as: "college" "college students", "depression", "stress", "anxiety", "therapy", "undergraduate" and "universities". The review revealed important data. First, the level of reported stress among college students has increased. Secondly, the level of anxiety among college students has also increased. Two interventions are compared, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness Behavioral Therapy. Both forms of psychotherapy have been used with undergraduate students. The studies included in the review evinced almost unilateral support for Cognitive-Behavioral as well as Mindfulness-Based therapies. The Cognitive-Behavioral therapy techniques allowed students to replace unhealthy cognitions and behaviors for healthier ones. The mindfulness-based therapy allowed students to learn techniques to become more grounded in the present moment. Some of the studies cited also included interpersonal-based therapy, which also showed positive results. These interventions helped college students attenuate their symptoms of depression and anxiety, and allowed them to cope better with the demands of college life. This is further expanded upon in the third chapter of the paper. These findings bear great relevance to the field of social work. As clinicians, social workers are directly involved in the ultimate delivery of these interventions to the populations who are suffering from depression, anxiety or stress. Therefore, the more clinicians become trained in these therapies, the better they can serve the undergraduate population.

Test anxious students demonstrate consistently diminished performance compared to their less anxious peers. Although the adverse impact of test anxiety on academic performance is well documented, there is active debate about the way that anxiety affects performance. Cognitive interference theory (CIT) may help explain this relationship. CIT suggests that test anxiety leads to increased levels of off-task thoughts, which are processed by the working memory, which leaves fewer resources to manage the task at hand. Traditional test anxiety interventions such as cognitive therapy focus on reducing anxiety by increasing positive or neutral self-talk which may place additional demands on cognitive resources. This may explain the modest improvements in cognitive performance and at times adverse effects associated with these traditional test anxiety interventions. Alternatively, acceptance based interventions, which promote nonjudgmental acceptance of anxious thoughts and feelings, may allow students to conserve cognitive resources that can be used to focus on the task at hand and maximize performance. To explore these possibilities, a sample of 88 university students were randomly assigned to receive one 2-hour acceptance based behavior therapy intervention (ABBT), cognitive therapy intervention (CT), or healthy living intervention (HL). Following the intervention, participants received anxiety inducing instructions and were administered three computerized working memory tasks. Finally, participants completed self report questionnaires. The results of this study demonstrated that participants in the ABBT group had significantly better performance on the digit span forward and Stroop tasks compared to participants in the CT or HL groups. Furthermore, the ABBT group demonstrated the lowest levels of cognitive interference, while demonstrating the highest levels of psychological flexibility and mindfulness compared to the CT or HL groups, while these between group differences did not reach significance due to low power, the pattern of these results demonstrates support for the role of these variables in the anxiety and performance relationship.
