Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organizations have become increasingly interested in hiring employees who are committed to the inherent value of work. The purpose of this causal comparative study was to compare the work ethic of high school athletes to non-athletes in a high school setting in South Carolina and analyzed the role of gender within that dynamic. A total of 345 responses were analyzed, with 139 reporting no participation in athletics, 87 reporting participation in sub-varsity athletics only, and 119 reporting participation in varsity athletics. The Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) was developed as a method of measuring work ethic and was composed of seven different constructs rather than a single measurement. A two-way analysis of variance was used to determine whether there are differences between each subgroup or whether an interaction between the two exists. Results demonstrated significant difference in work ethic among the three levels of athletic participation. No significant difference was found in work ethic between genders. The research also found a significant interaction between gender and athletic participation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coaches are placed in a myriad of ethical decision-making situations. Making decisions such as playing time, boosters, parents, social media, power differentials, scholarships, and relationships are just a few examples of what a coach may need to navigate. While many day-to-day situations are easily resolved, some are not. Therefore, how and by what process should a coach make these decisions? This book presents a variety of cases based on true stories that present some of the ethical decisions coaches must make across high school, collegiate, and professional sports. Using a sequential system of less to more complicated, 40 case studies are presented across the sports spectrum that coaches have experienced. This is a key component of the book. Although names and situations have been changed, these cases have happened and provide real applicability to coaches. In addition, each case may contain multiple situations perhaps with no "right" answer that test a coach’s value system and ability to prioritize actions. Questions are provided at the end of each case that allow for reflection. The primary audience for this book includes current coaches as well as students in coach education programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a game where players are expected to call their own penalties and scoring the least points leads to victory, decorum takes precedence over showmanship and philosophical questions become par for the course. Few other sports are as suited for ethical and metaphysical examination as golf. It is a game defined by dichotomies—relaxing, yet frustrating, social, yet solitary—and between these extremes there is room for much philosophical inquiry. In Golf and Philosophy: Lessons from the Links, a clubhouse full of skilled contributors tee off on a range of philosophical topics within the framework of the fairway. The book's chapters are arranged in the style of an eighteen-hole golf course, with the front nine exploring ethical matters of rationality and social civility in a world of moral hazards and roughs. The back nine pries even deeper, slicing into matters of the metaphysical, including chapters on mysticism, idealism, identity, and meaning. Taken together, the collection examines the intellectual nature of this beloved pastime, considering the many nuances of a sport that requires high levels of concentration, patience, and consistency, as well as upstanding moral character. Golf and Philosophy celebrates the joys and complexities of the game, demonstrating that golf has much to teach both its spectators and participants about modern life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We encourage children to play sports from an early age in order to instill in them such virtues as teamwork, perseverance, respect, fairness, and discipline, but, as perennial scandals in the headlines show us, sports also give rise to thorny ethical problems. Can the ugly, corrupt side of sports counteract their potential to deepen our moral lives and make a positive impact? This accessible book tackles a wide-ranging array of topics that arise in ethics of sport on every level, from amateur to professional, and from the general to the specific. Ethics of sport expert Robert Simon examines provocative, thorny questions throughout the book: Why do we care so much about sports? Do sports embody special values that social function views fail to grasp? Are such values good or bad? What counts as overemphasizing winning? Should winning be important in youth sports? What makes cheating in sports ethically objectionable? Is trash-talking cheating? How have performance enhancing drugs affected sport? Can we distinguish them from other advances that enhance performance, such as technological improvements in equipment? Should contact sports be modified to protect the health of athletes? Do organized athletics belong in schools? Don't athletic programs undermine academics in secondary and college education? Would it be better to separate sports and education, so schools focus on academics? Do sports undermine or reinforce gender equity? Why do so many elite athletes misbehave? How have professional sports affected minority groups and the underprivileged? Is money ruining elite sport? Simon's short exploration of the ethics of sports, which unfolds in this series' distinctive question-and-answer format, will interest sports enthusiasts, those who seek to understand the ethical controversies in sport even from an outsider's perspective, and students of applied ethics who need a primer on sports ethics in particular.
