Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While voice is widely used in speech recognition and speaker identification, its application in biomedical fields is much less common. This book systematically introduces the authors’ research on voice analysis for biomedical applications, particularly pathological voice analysis. Firstly, it reviews the field to highlight the biomedical value of voice. It then offers a comprehensive overview of the workflow and aspects of pathological voice analysis, including voice acquisition systems, voice pitch estimation methods, glottal closure instant detection, feature extraction and learning, and the multi-audio fusion approaches. Lastly, it discusses the experimental results that have shown the superiority of these techniques. This book is useful to researchers, professionals and postgraduate students working in fields such as speech signal processing, pattern recognition, and biomedical engineering. It is also a valuable resource for those involved in interdisciplinary research.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital imaging and signal analysis are extremely useful in the diagnosis and study of voice disorders. When a microphone captures the voice, an acoustic signal can be produced and stored on a computer. The distinct signal pattern is an excellent indication of the quality of voice, and can be used to compare deviant voices with healthy voices. This study focuses on a computer analysis of laryngeal function-specifically on the acoustic analysis of vocal fold vibration in normal subjects and patients with specific voice disorders. The vocal pattern of each patient is analyzed using the MatLab computer program, producing a graph showing the unique vocal pattern for each patient. The acoustic recording of the vocal signal is observed, along with the analysis using fast Fourier Transform and short Fourier Transform. The patterns of many voice disorders are compared, including those in patients with vocal fold scarring and vocal fold cysts. A comparison is then made between the patterns of patients with a "normal" voice and those with the specified disorders. A brief introduction to the laryngeal image based analysis of glottal waveform is included, and compared with acoustic analysis results.

A classic work, now in its sixth edition, Clinical Voice Pathology: Theory and Management is a compilation of the authors' vast clinical and research experiences and addresses a considerable range of voice disorders in various populations and from various etiologies including medical, environmental, social, psychological, occupational, and idiopathic threats to vocal health. The text continues to be organized for the graduate speech-language pathology student and instructor, building the foundational knowledge necessary to evaluate and treat voice disorders including history and common causes of voice disorders, anatomy and physiology of voice production, pathologies of the vocal mechanism, and an extensive array of evaluation and management approaches. In addition, the text continues to provide background in caring for the professional voice and those patients presenting with head and neck cancers. New to the Sixth EditionA new chapter introducing the SLP's responsibilities with trach and vent patientsUpdated references throughout the text to reflect the current state of clinical research in evaluation and treatment of voice disordersExpanded voice therapy chapter including new evidence-based management approachesUse of 'Call Out' boxes throughout the text to highlight cases, encourage additional thought, and suggest additional readingsFull color throughout the text including new figures and artwork to enhance learning and understanding of the materialVideos of laryngeal pathologies Whether a typical voice user, occupational voice user, elite vocal performer, head and neck cancer patient, or an individual who has lost the ability to communicate competently and confidently due to a detrimental voice change, each patient presents a unique diagnostic dilemma: how best to return the voice to its optimal condition? This text thoroughly prepares the speech-language pathology student to answer this question through a systematic development of the knowledge base necessary to evaluate and manage voice disorders. With numerous full-color images and multiple case examples Clinical Voice Pathology: Theory and Management, Sixth Edition, not only maintains but significantly improves on the standards set by its previous editions as the primary text for a graduate level course in clinical voice disorders. Book excerpt: The International Workshop on Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions for Biomedical Applications (MAVEBA) came into being in 1999 from the particularly felt need of sharing know-how, objectives and results between areas that until then seemed quite distinct such as bioengineering, medicine and singing. MAVEBA deals with all aspects concerning the study of the human voice with applications ranging from the newborn to the adult and elderly. Over the years the initial issues have grown and spread also in other fields of research such as occupational voice disorders, neurology, rehabilitation, image and video analysis. MAVEBA takes place every two years in Firenze, Italy. This edition celebrates twenty-two years of uninterrupted and successful research in the field of voice analysis.

Book excerpt: Automatic Speech Signal Analysis for Clinical Diagnosis and Assessment of Speech Disorders provides a survey of methods designed to aid clinicians in the diagnosis and monitoring of speech disorders such as dysarthria and dyspraxia, with an emphasis on the signal processing techniques, statistical validity of the results presented in the literature, and the appropriateness of methods that do not require specialized equipment, rigorously controlled recording procedures or highly skilled personnel to interpret results. Such techniques offer the promise of a simple and cost-effective, yet objective, assessment of a range of medical conditions, which would be of great value to clinicians. The ideal scenario would begin with the collection of examples of the clients’ speech, either over the phone or using portable recording devices operated by non-specialist nursing staff. The recordings could then be analyzed initially to aid diagnosis of conditions, and subsequently to monitor the clients’ progress and response to treatment. The automation of this process would allow more frequent and regular assessments to be performed, as well as providing greater objectivity.
