Book excerpt: These lectures were given shortly after Steiner returned from a trip to England where he visited many of the stone circles of the Druids. Because of this trip, he could give a lively description of the clairvoyant consciousness of the people who erected these ancient monuments. He describes how they discerned the changing seasons and stellar influences from the quality, of the shadows cast by the stones. From this, they directed agricultural practices and acquired a deep knowledge of the elemental beings in nature. Their perception of the spiritual being of the Sun, while shaded from its physical light, prepared them for the ready acceptance of Christianity long before missionaries from Rome reached these islands.

Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner's four mystery dramas are powerful portrayals of the complex laws of reincarnation and karma. They transport us into a landscape of the human soul and spirit, where suprasensory beings are active. Through the perception of these hidden worlds, we are given the opportunity to understand the struggles we face in attempting to apply spiritual knowledge to our everyday lives and relationships. Written between 1910 and 1913 during periods of intense inner and outer work, these dramas are powerful testimonies to Steiner's artistic creativity. By manifesting soul and spirit forms on a stage, they foreshadow a dramatic art for the future. The complete cycle of four plays is reproduced here in the classic translation by Ruth and Hans Pusch. The Four Plays: The Portal of Initiation: A Rosicrucian Mystery, through Rudolf Steiner The Soul's Probation: A Life Tableau in Dramatic Scenes As Sequel to the Portal of Initiation, through Rudolf Steiner The Guardian of the Threshold: Soul Events in Dramatic Scenes, by Rudolf Steiner The Souls' Awakening: Soul and Spirit Events in Dramatic Scenes, by Rudolf Steiner This volume is a translation of Vier Mysteriendramen (vol. 14 of Rudolf Steiner's Complete Works).

Book excerpt: The Doorway of Initiation – The Trial of the Soul – The Guardian of the Threshold – The Souls Awaken Rudolf Steiner's four modern mystery dramas are powerful portrayals of the complex laws of reincarnation and karma, transporting us to landscapes of soul and spirit where supra-sensory beings are visible, active and influential. Through perception of these hidden worlds, we are given tools to comprehend the background to the struggles we face in everyday life – both in human relationships and in our attempts to practise spiritual development. Written between the years 1910 and 1913, during periods of intense inner and outer work, the dramas are powerful testimonies to Steiner's artistic creativity. By manifesting soul and spirit forms on stage, they foreshadow a dramatic art of the future. Rudolf Steiner planned for all four mystery dramas to be performed in August 1923, but this was no longer possible because of the burning of the first Goetheanum on New Year's Eve, 1922. They were eventually performed together for the first time in 1930 and since then have been staged regularly, in many languages, throughout the world. This fresh rendering into English by Richard Ramsbotham also features an extensive introduction by him. >GA 14

Book excerpt: "Be a person of initiative and beware, lest through hindrances of your own body or hindrances that otherwise come in your way, you do not find the center of your being, within which lies the source of your initiative. Observe that, in your life, all joy and sorrow, all happiness and pain, will depend on finding or not finding your own individual initiative. This should appear, as if written in golden letters, constantly before the soul of anthroposophists. Initiative lies in their karma, and much of what meets them in this life will depend on the extent to which they can become willingly, actively conscious of it." --Rudolf Steiner, Aug. 4, 1924 Torin Finser takes on some of our contemporary challenges and proposes new solutions. Rather than simply "kicking the can down the road," as often happens with issues such as sovereign debts, Middle East conflicts, and environmental issues, Finser calls for individual initiative. Drawing on a variety of rich cultural and spiritual traditions, he makes the case for social change that begins within. To do so, one must first access resources that support initiative and innovation. Key questions discussed in this book include: How is it possible to live a spiritual life in our materialistic age? Can an individual person still make a difference? How can we use a whole-systems approach to innovation? How can planetary wisdom help us find appropriate leadership styles? What are the inner conditions needed to work with the transcendent Self? In the swirl of multi-tasking, how can we find moments of solitude and reflection? We need new, a ethical individualism that is fully transformative. As quoted from the Peace Pilgrim in chapter 2: This is the way of peace--overcome evil with good, and falsehood with truth, and hatred with love. Today's world needs people of initiative--those willing to become the change that is so desperately needed. This book offers a wakeup call for inspired leadership.

Book excerpt: The four Mystery Dramas were created, produced and printed one each year, one after the other, from 1910-1913. They took place in different theatres in Munich but always in the month of August. The writing of the dramas, the creating of the scenery, the making of the costumes, the learning of roles, the general directing, the organization of the printing and all the other inummerable things connected with such a major production happened within a matter of weeks before the main performance. There was a literal whirlwind of activity, and it is reported that often the scenes were written during the night before a scheduled rehearsal, and that at five or six in the morning a boy would come from the press to pick up the manuscript for the printing of the scene for that day's rehearsal. All this activity centered around Rudolf Steiner who gave directions or advice on every aspect of the production down to the smallest details. He not only wrote the dramas themselves, but also indicated how such soul and spiritual pictures could be presented and played on stage. A fifth drama was also planned, which was to include scenes from Ancient Greece and its mystery centers, but the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914 meant that it had to be postponed. Rudolf Steiner's early death in 1925 resulted in it never coming to production, nor ever being written down.

Book excerpt: Rudolf Steiner wrote four mystery dramas intended to portray the spiritual path of self-knowledge as described by spiritual science, or Anthroposophy. Those plays are not merely symbolic but realistic depictions in a spiritual sense. In this book, Steiner describes how "The Portal of Initiation" (the first of his dramas) portrays the intense and tempestuous inner events of initiation as experienced by a young painter. He explains the spiritual background of this character's "karmic" tests and higher guidance. He also discusses the Rosicrucian nature of this play, as well as the "symbolism and fantasy" of the second drama, "The Soul's Probation." Steiner also emphasizes the power of certain fairy tales and poetry for bridging the gap between the spiritual and material worlds. As one of the mystery dramas shows, this is especially valuable for those who tend to be intellectuals. Rudolf Steiner portrayed much of the wisdom of his spiritual science in the mystery dramas and intended them to graphically depict what he taught all his life. As he said, "If people will exert themselves...to work with the drama, I will not have to give any more lectures for a long time." With the exception of German-speaking countries, the longest time Steiner spent abroad was in Britain, a place he clearly considered central to his work.In this extraordinary, thorough study of more than 1,200 pages and dozens of illustrations, Crispian Villeneuve documents those important visits, reproducing letters, articles, records and other archival material, much of it published for the first time. He also studies the interconnected theme of the life and work of D.N. Dunlop, Rudolf Steiner's closest British colleague.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The great importance of these plays is not that we are given many thoughts to further our understanding of Anthroposophy, but that we are shown the transforming power of spiritual striving in individual lives, and especially the development in human relationships through an awareness of the forces of destiny. In this respect, the Mystery Plays are unique" (from the foreword). In writing and producing his mystery plays, Rudolf Steiner offered his spiritual observations and concepts from a fresh, artistic perspective. The dramas appeared in the context of the movement of "theatrical realism" during a period when only a handful of dramatists attempted representations of a spiritual world, most presented as fantasy. In introducing spiritual beings to the stage and showing their connections with human beings, Steiner was pioneering a drama for the future. Eileen Hutchins's classic work on Steiner's Mystery Plays provides a thoughtful commentary that helps us enter the minds and souls of the characters. By gaining insights into their relationships and inner lives and the problems and situations they faced, the characters are brought to life. Gradually, we begin to see possible solutions to the complex web of their difficulties.

Book excerpt: The fourth drama enters new terrain based on what has been achieved in the first three dramas. The end of those brought about the unifying of the various main characters in a Temple ceremony whereby they consecrated themselves to take over the work of the traditional Mystics for modern times. Up until this point, the dramas had been concerned with personal development, the achieving of spiritual vision, the beholding and integrating of a correct view of Karma. But now the step has to be taken to bring all this into a concrete relationship with the modern world. The task of the Mystics had been to preserve in secret the mysteries of humanity. The task of the new Temple servants is to bring those mysteries to humanity again and make them fruitful in the modern world. This requires, on the one hand, a willingness to approach the elements of the world and interact with them, and on the other, the cultivating of an inner knowledge which will give one the new faculties and strength to do that. The essential question thus arising for all of them, illustrated by the greatly increased role Benedictus plays in this fourth drama, is the question of spiritual help and from where and under what conditions it can come to us. Not only Lucifer and Ahriman are here operating for their own intersts, good human beings and good spiritual beings are working, too, and who these are, where these are, and what relation we can have to them is a matter of the greatest urgency for humanity at this time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the hundredth anniversary of Rudolf Steiner's first mystery drama in 2010, there has been a revival of interest in the English-speaking world. There have been several productions in North America and England, and new mystery dramas have been written, imagining possible sequels to Steiner's dramas. This volume contains two new translations of the third and fourth mystery dramas, created especially for new productions in the UK. The Guardian of the Thresholdwas translated into blank verse (in which Steiner wrote all his dramas) and The Souls Awakeninto free verse. Although Steiner's four mystery dramas all build on one another, The Guardian of the Thresholdand The Souls Awaken--set more than a decade after the events of the first two plays--may also be seen as bringing a new beginning after the first two dramas. An introduction by Richard Ramsbotham explores some of the questions surrounding the third and fourth of Steiner's mystery dramas, including their relationship to events in the anthroposophic movement during 1923 and 1924. The introduction also discusses the increasing significance of the mystery dramas today.

Book excerpt: ‘Our neurosensory system is inwardly configured music, and we experience music as an artistic quality to the degree that a piece of music is in tune with the mystery of our own musical structure.’ – Rudolf Steiner What is music? Rudolf Steiner regards the essence of music as something spiritual, inaudible to the senses. The world of tones, borne on the vibrations of air, is not the essential element. ‘The true nature of music, the spiritual element in music’, he says, ‘is found between the tones, lies in the intervals as an inaudible quality.’ Rudolf Steiner spoke repeatedly about music as something inherent both in the cosmos and the human being. It played an important role in many forms of ritual and worship, and people once perceived a link between music and the world of stars, which was seen as the dwelling place of the gods. Nowadays our view of music is divorced from such religious outlooks, but research repeatedly demonstrates the profound effect it continues to have on us. In this unique anthology of texts, compiled with a commentary and notes by Michael Kurtz, Steiner describes the realm of the spiritually-resonating harmonies of the spheres and our intrinsic connection to this cosmic music. He also explores the phenomenon of musical listening and experience, as well as Goethe’s approach to music.
