Book Synopsis Joyce's Kaleidoscope by : Philip Kitcher
Download or read book Joyce's Kaleidoscope written by Philip Kitcher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's Ulysses, once regarded as obscure and obscene, is now viewed as one of the masterpieces of world literature. Yet Joyce's final novel, Finnegans Wake, to which he devoted seventeen years, remains virtually unread, except by scholarly specialists. Its linguistic novelties, apparently based on an immense learning that few can share, make it appear impenetrable. Joyce's Kaleidoscope attempts to dissolve the darkness and to invite lovers of literature to engage with Finnegans Wake. Philip Kitcher proposes that the Wake has at its core an age-old philosophical question, "What makes a life worth living?", and that Joyce explores that question from the perspective of someone who feels that a long life is now ending. So the complex dream language is a way of investigating issues that are hard to face directly; the reader is invited to struggle with the novel's aging dreamer who seeks reassurance about the worth of what he has done and been. Joyce finds his way to reassurance. The sweeping music and the high comedy of Finnegans Wake celebrate the ordinary doings of ordinary people. With great humanity and a distinctive brand of humanism, Joyce points us to the things that matter in our lives. His final novel is a festival of life itself. From this perspective, the supposedly opaque, or nonsensical, language opens up as a rich source for the reader's reflections: though readers won't all approach it the same way, or with the same set of references, there is meaning in it for everyone. Kitcher's detailed study of the entire text brings out its musical resonances and its musical structures. It analyzes the novel overall while bringing deep insight to the reading of key individual passages. This engaging guide will aid readers not just to make sense of the novel, but to relish the remarkable accomplishment of Joyce's least appreciated work.

Book Synopsis James Joyce and the Difference of Language by : Laurent Milesi
Download or read book James Joyce and the Difference of Language written by Laurent Milesi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-07-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce and the Difference of Language offers an alternative look at Joyce's writing by placing his language at the intersection of various critical perspectives: linguistics, philosophy, feminism, psychoanalysis, postcolonialism and intertextuality. Combining close textual analysis and theoretically informed readings, an international team of leading scholars explores how Joyce's experiments with language repeatedly challenge our ways of reading. Topics covered include reading Joyce through translations; the role of Dante's literary linguistics in Finnegans Wake; and the place of gender in Joyce's modernism. Two further essays illustrate aspects of Joyce's cultural politics in Ulysses and the ethics of desire in Finnegans Wake. Informed by debates in Joyce scholarship, literary studies and critical theory, and addressing the full range of his writing, this volume comprehensively examines the critical diversity of Joyce's linguistic practices. It is essential reading for all scholars of Joyce and modernism.

Book Synopsis Parallaxing Joyce by : Penelope Paparunas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parallaxing Joyce is a groundbreaking collection of critical essays, as it approaches James Joyce's work using parallactic principles as its overriding theoretical framework. While parallax, a frequent term in Joyce's work, originally derives from astronomy, it has been appropriated in this volume to provide fresh perspectives on Joyce's oeuvre. By comparing Joyce and Marilyn Monroe, films, art, serializations, philosophy, translation and censorship, among others, these scholars transform our way of reading not only Joyce but also the world around us. This volume will appeal not only to academic researchers and Joyce enthusiasts, but also to anyone interested in literary and cultural studies.

Book Synopsis Joyce, Derrida, Lacan and the Trauma of History by : Christine van Boheemen
Download or read book Joyce, Derrida, Lacan and the Trauma of History written by Christine van Boheemen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-09-18 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Joyce, Derrida, Lacan and the Trauma of History, Christine van Boheemen-Saaf examines the relationship between Joyce's postmodern textuality and the traumatic history of colonialism in Ireland. Joyce's influence on Lacanian psychoanalysis and Derrida's philosophy, Van Boheemen-Saaf suggests, ought to be viewed from a postcolonial perspective. She situates Joyce's writing as a practice of indirect 'witnessing' to a history that remains unspeakable. The loss of a natural relationship to language in Joyce calls for a new ethical dimension in the process of reading. The practice of reading becomes an act of empathy to what the text cannot express in words. In this way, she argues, Joyce's work functions as a material location for the inner voice of Irish cultural memory. This book engages with a wide range of contemporary critical theory and brings Joyce's work into dialogue with thinkers such as Zizek, Adorno, Lyotard, as well as feminism and postcolonial theory.

Finally, a refugee for the second time, he died there on 13 January 1941 and is buried in Fluntern Cemetery. This guide is conceived both as a book that may be read in its entirety or consulted selectively for specific information. An introduction and three chapters, Joyce in Zurich, Zurich in Joyce and Zurich after Joyce, are followed by sixty alphabetically ordered articles on people, places, institutions and events relevant to Joyce during his time in Zurich. Book Synopsis Impossible Joyce by : Patrick O'Neill
Download or read book Impossible Joyce written by Patrick O'Neill and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Joyce's Finnegans Wake has repeatedly been declared to be entirely untranslatable. Nonetheless, it has been translated, transposed, or transcreated into a surprising variety of languages including complete renditions in French, German, Portuguese, Dutch, Japanese, and Korean, and partial renditions in Italian, Spanish, and a variety of other languages. Impossible Joyce explores the fascinating range of different approaches adopted by translators in coming to grips with Joyce's astonishing literary text. In this study, Patrick O'Neill builds on an approach first developed in his book Polyglot Joyce, but deepens his focus by considering Finnegans Wake exclusively. Venturing from Umberto Eco's assertion that the novel is a machine designed to generate as many meanings as possible for readers, he provides a sustained examination of the textual effects generated by comparative readings of translated excerpts. In doing so, O'Neill makes manifest the ways in which attempts to translate this extraordinary text have resulted in a cumulative extension of Finnegans Wake into an even more extraordinary macrotext encompassing and subsuming its collective renderings.
