Book excerpt: Elizabethan News Pamphlets is the first book to explore comprehensively the production and dissemination of the Elizabethan news pamphlets published between 1589-1593. This book collects, defines, and investigates the nearly 60 extant news quartos, and also examines their relationship to the birth of journalism, the writings of Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Spenser, the rise of national identity, and the complexities of national identity. This archival work begins with the actions of the charismatic Henry of Navarre. After Navarre became King of France in 1589, scores of printed documents presented his struggles with the Catholic League. The considerable involvement of English soldiers in the wars created a captive market for the news pamphlets. Elizabethans readily purchased the news quartos and soon Navarre became the most widely known non-English personality of the day. The pamphlets play an important role in the history of journalism and publications. The roots of journalism took hold during this period as a sophisticated notion of objectivity and soon serial publications resulted from this consistent, regular publication. The sudden end to the wars in 1593 ended both the flood of news reports and serial publications. The documents also provide a significant contribution to our understanding of English national identity. While scholars have studied the writings of numerous "discursive communities" and how these communities viewed England, the writings about war have received far less scrutiny. This book examines scores of archival documents in constructing a social, literary, religious, and political history of the 1590s.

Book excerpt: Throughout the 1880s Oscar Wilde devoted a great part of his creative energies to working as a professional journalist and he was prepared to write on a remarkable range of topics. Uniquely witty, intellectually acute, and socially aware Wilde's journalism not only displays the extensive reading and stylistic experimentation that prepared the way for his major works of the 1890s, it provides an essential record of the vibrant and rapidly changing journalistic culture in which he played a major part. This collection includes: A Handbook To Marriage A Ride Through Morocco Aristotle At Afternoon Tea Balzac In English Dinners And Dishes Hamlet At The Lyceum London Models Mr Morris On Tapestry Mr Whistler's Ten O'clock Mrs Langtry As Hester Grazebrook Olivia At The Lyceum The American Invasion Two Biographies Of Keats Two Letters To The Daily Chronicle Woman's Dress Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900) is a central figure in aesthetic writing. Wilde was a poet, fiction writer, essayist and editor. Oscar Wilde is often seen as a homosexual icon although as many men of his day he was also a husband and father. Wilde's life ended at odds with Victorian morals that surrounded him. He died in exile.

Book excerpt: Video cuts in Shakespeare productions by companies like the Wooster Group and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, cut-and-paste searches of Shakespeare's texts in online databases, cut-scenes from Shakespeare in video games, mp3 files of famous Shakespeare speeches by famous actors, mash-ups using Shakespeare clips on YouTube, not to mention customary cuts to Shakespeare's scripts in stage productions and films: all are examples of how Shakespeare is being consumed today through cuts. In distracted times Shakespeare has, in more ways than one, been driven to distraction. Shakespeare | Cut considers these contemporary practices, but it also takes the long view of how Shakespeare's texts have been cut apart in creative ways beginning in Shakespeare's own time. The book's five chapters consider cuts, cutting, and cutwork from a variety of angles: (1) as bodily experiences, (2) as essential parts of the process whereby Shakespeare and his contemporaries crafted scripts, (3) as units in perception, (4) as technologies situated at the interface between "figure" and "life," and (5) as a fetish in western culture since 1900. Printed here for the first time are examples of the cut-ups that William S. Burroughs and Brion Guysin carried out with Shakespeare texts in the 1950s. The illustrations range from seventeenth-century promptbooks to the earliest photographs of Shakespeare performers in the 1840s and '50s to cards from "The Shakespeare Game" published in 1900 to Wyndham Lewis's lithograph of "Timon of Athens" for the first issue of BLAST in 1914 to stills from contemporary multimedia productions like Toneelgroep's Kings of War -- publisher website.
