Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the developments in optimality aspects of crossover designs. Crossover designs are immensely useful in various areas of human investigation including agriculture, animal nutrition, clinical trials, pharmaceutical studies, biological assays, weather modification experiments, sensory evaluation of food products and learning experiments. Research on the optimality aspects of crossover designs has developed only in the last three decades, and it has now emerged as a potential field for further investigation. This book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. It covers optimal crossover designs at length by consolidating vast amounts of material from the literature, and includes many recent and deep results. It is expected that this book will not only provide a one-stop reference for the available results, but also encourage further research in this area of substantial practical relevance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an enormous growth in recent years in the literature on discrete optimal designs. The optimality problems have been formulated in various models arising in the experimental designs and substantial progress has been made towards solving some of these. The subject has now reached a stage of completeness which calls for a self-contained monograph on this topic. The aim of this monograph is to present the state of the art and to focus on more recent advances in this rapidly developing area. We start with a discussion of statistical optimality criteria in Chapter One. Chapters Two and Three deal with optimal block designs. Row-column designs are dealt with in Chapter Four. In Chapter Five we deal with optimal designs with mixed effects models. Repeated measurement designs are considered in Chapter Six. Chapter Seven deals with some special situations and Weighing designs are dis cussed in Chapter Eight. We have endeavoured to include all the major developments that have taken place in the last three decades. The book should be of use to research workers in several areas including combinatorics as well as to the experimenters in diverse fields of applications. Since the details of the construction of the designs are available in excellent books, we have only pointed out the designs which have optimality proper ties. We believe, this will be adequate for the experimenters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal Design of Experiments offers a rare blend of linear algebra, convex analysis, and statistics. The optimal design for statistical experiments is first formulated as a concave matrix optimization problem. Using tools from convex analysis, the problem is solved generally for a wide class of optimality criteria such as D-, A-, or E-optimality. The book then offers a complementary approach that calls for the study of the symmetry properties of the design problem, exploiting such notions as matrix majorization and the Kiefer matrix ordering. The results are illustrated with optimal designs for polynomial fit models, Bayes designs, balanced incomplete block designs, exchangeable designs on the cube, rotatable designs on the sphere, and many other examples.

Book excerpt: The book contains selected published research papers present in the literature since late fifties. The authors of the papers are eminent academicians, planners and scientists of repute in their respective areas. In the section on Introduction to Design of Experiments, the short overview is given on design of experiment, its optimality & efficiency criteria. Introduction to Mixture Problem: Design and its Construction, this section contains the basic concept and models for mixture problem, and also contains the construction of designs and its test criteria for mixture problems. Mixture experiments are generally conducted in different branches of agricultural and industrial research where it is not feasible to have the components of the mixture in full range but in some restricted space. Papers giving exhaustive reviews of such situation have been included in Constraints on the Component Proportions and Process Variable in Mixture Experiments. In the section on Optimal Mixture Design contains the papers related with optimality criteria of mixture experiments. In the section on Mixture Model Forms and Additional Topics contain the papers based on the different studies related with the mixture experiments. This is perhaps one of the few attempts to bring together papers on Mixture Experiments with emphasis on agricultural and industrial sectors for promoting mixture methodology.

Book excerpt: How to identify optimal phase II trial designs Providing a practical guide containing the information needed to make crucial decisions regarding phase II trial designs, A Practical Guide to Designing Phase II Trials in Oncology sets forth specific points for consideration between the statistician and clinician when designing a phase II trial, including issues such as how the treatment works, choice of outcome measure and randomization, and considering both academic and industry perspectives. A comprehensive and systematic library of available phase II trial designs is included, saving time otherwise spent considering multiple manuscripts, and real-life practical examples of using this approach to design phase II trials in cancer are given. A Practical Guide to Designing Phase II Trials in Oncology: Offers a structured and practical approach to phase II trial design Considers trial design from both an academic and industry perspective Includes a structured library of available phase II trial designs Is relevant to both clinical and statistical researchers at all levels Includes real life examples of applying this approach For those new to trial design, A Practical Guide to Designing Phase II Trials in Oncology will be a unique and practical learning tool, providing an introduction to the concepts behind informed decision making in phase II trials. For more experienced practitioners, the book will offer an overview of new, less familiar approaches to phase II trial design, providing alternative options to those which they may have previously used.

As can be seen from the long list of contributions, Götz has had and still has an enormous range of interests, and colleagues to share these interests with. He is a leading expert in linear models with a particular focus on matrix algebra in its relation to statistics. He has published in almost all major statistics and matrix theory journals. His research activities also include other areas (like nonparametrics, statistics and sports, combination of forecasts and magic squares, just to mention afew). Götz Trenkler was born in Dresden in 1943. After his school years in East G- many and West-Berlin, he obtained a Diploma in Mathematics from Free University of Berlin (1970), where he also discovered his interest in Mathematical Statistics. In 1973, he completed his Ph.D. with a thesis titled: On a distance-generating fu- tion of probability measures. He then moved on to the University of Hannover to become Lecturer and to write a habilitation-thesis (submitted 1979) on alternatives to the Ordinary Least Squares estimator in the Linear Regression Model, a topic that would become his predominant ?eld of research in the years to come.

Book excerpt: The development and introduction of new experimental designs in the last fifty years has been quite staggering, brought about largely by an ever-widening field of applications. Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 2: Advanced Experimental Design is the second of a two-volume body of work that builds upon the philosophical foundations of experimental design set forth by Oscar Kempthorne half a century ago and updates it with the latest developments in the field. Designed for advanced-level graduate students and industry professionals, this text includes coverage of incomplete block and row-column designs; symmetrical, asymmetrical, and fractional factorial designs; main effect plans and their construction; supersaturated designs; robust design, or Taguchi experiments; lattice designs; and cross-over designs.

Book excerpt: The year 2001 marks the centenary of Biometrika, one of the world's leading academic journals in statistical theory and methodology. In celebration of this, the book brings together two sets of papers from the journal. The first comprises seven specially commissioned articles (authors: D.R. Cox, A.C. Davison, Anthony C. Atkinson and R.A. Bailey, David Oakes, Peter Hall, T.M.F. Smith, and Howell Tong). These articles review the history of the journal and the most important contributions made by appearing in the journal in a number of important areas of statitisical activity, including general theory and methodology, surveys and time sets. In the process the papers describe the general development of statistical science during the twentieth century. The second group of ten papers are a selection of particularly seminal articles form the journal's first hundred years. The book opens with an introduction by the editors Professor D.M. Titterington and Sir David Cox.
