Book excerpt: Heartfelt personal accounts from Asian American women on their experiences with skin color bias, from being labeled “too dark” to becoming empowered to challenge beauty standards “I have a vivid memory of standing in my grandmother’s kitchen, where, by the table, she closely watched me as I played. When I finally looked up to ask why she was staring, her expression changed from that of intent observer to one of guilt and shame. . . . ‘My anak (dear child),’ she began, ‘you are so beautiful. It is a shame that you are so dark. No Filipino man will ever want to marry you.’”—“Shade of Brown,” Noelle Marie Falcis How does skin color impact the lives of Asian American women? Featuring contributors of many ages, nationalities, and professions, this compelling collection covers a wide range of topics, including light-skin privilege, aspirational whiteness, and anti-blackness. From skin-whitening creams to cosmetic surgery, Whiter amplifies the diverse voices of Asian American women who continue to bravely challenge the power of skin color in their own lives.

Book excerpt: Star Trek meets Leverage in a space opera that’s “refreshingly hopeful and heaps of fun” (author Megan E. O’Keefe). Jasper Wilder is an activist, not a spy, but he’ll become one if that’s what it takes to stop Ravel Corporation from reviving the research project that devastated his home planet. His plan is simple enough: Break into the secure facility. Steal the research data. Find a weakness and sabotage the project. But all that goes out the airlock when he meets Havoc, a passionate but politically naive labor organizer trying to reform Ravel from within. Havoc could help Jasper, but instead, he’s fighting for a lost cause. Jasper knows that if he sticks with his own plan, Havoc will likely take the blame—and Ravel doesn’t treat activists kindly. With an elite security operative closing in, and time running out to sabotage the deadly project before it launches, Jasper needs to find a way to team up with Havoc… before his mission hurts the person he’s coming to care about. Full of adventure and suspense, LGBTQ+ characters, found family, a sentient spaceship with anxiety issues, and hijinks galore, Warped State is sure to delight fans of Ann Leckie, Becky Chambers, and Martha Wells. Praise for Warped State “Jo Miles’ Warped State is delightful in every way—smart, emotional, funny, inspiring, and brilliantly written. You’ll absolutely fall in love with Jasper and Havoc, cheering the whole way.” - Karen Osborne, author of Architects of Memory “Refreshingly hopeful and heaps of fun, Warped State will keep you turning pages late into the night.” - Megan E. O’Keefe, author of The Blighted Stars and Velocity Weapon “A rollicking spy story with a wonderful romance woven in… [Warped State] is a terrific ride.” - John Appel, author of Assassin’s Orbit

Book Synopsis Modernity as Experience and Interpretation by : Peter Wagner
Download or read book Modernity as Experience and Interpretation written by Peter Wagner and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all modern today. But modernity today is not what it used to be. Over the past few decades, modernity has been radically changed by globalization, individualization, new inequalities, and fundamentalism. A novel way of analysing contemporary societies is needed. This book proposes such an analysis. Every society seeks answers to certain basic questions: how to order life in common; how to satisfy human needs; how to establish knowledge. Sociology long assumed that the answers had been found once and for all: a liberal-democratic state, a market economy, and free scientific institutions. This trinity used to be called ‘modern society’. By contrast, this book is based on the idea that, under conditions of modernity, there are no stable and certain answers to these questions. There is a plurality of possible answers, every proposed answer can be criticized and contested, and every society needs to find its answer on its own. This new sociology of modernity proposes two key instruments through which to understand the answers given to those questions: the experiences human beings have of their own modernity and the interpretations they give to those experiences. It reviews the history of ‘Western’ modernity in this light and then focuses on the specific answers that were and are being developed in Europe.

Book excerpt: For centuries, they have lived among us, a secret race as old as time, they have inspired our greatest legends, our grimmest fairy tales, and our grandest nightmares. Changelings by day and slayers at dark, they call themselves People of the Blood. Mankind calls them Dragons. But few have survived to this day, and none have stepped forward to tell their story. Until now…. Here at last are the private confessions of one Peter DelaSangre…of his isolated youth on an island off the coast of Miami…of the pleasure he finds in fortune, fine art and music, and the hunt for human prey…of his lonely balancing act between the worlds of humans and Dragons, neither of which feels like home…and of the overwhelming need that will finally give his life purpose: to find a female of his own kind. “Brilliant….Troop takes the loneliness, angst, and eroticism so often found in the works of Anne Rice and weaves them into a new kind of misunderstood monster. Push aside the vampires and werewolves…and enter the dragon.”—Christopher Golden, author of Straight On ‘Til Morning
Book Synopsis The Puerto Rican Nation on the Move by : Jorge Duany
Download or read book The Puerto Rican Nation on the Move written by Jorge Duany and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2003-10-15 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puerto Ricans maintain a vibrant identity that bridges two very different places--the island of Puerto Rico and the U.S. mainland. Whether they live on the island, in the States, or divide time between the two, most imagine Puerto Rico as a separate nation and view themselves primarily as Puerto Rican. At the same time, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. citizens since 1917, and Puerto Rico has been a U.S. commonwealth since 1952. Jorge Duany uses previously untapped primary sources to bring new insights to questions of Puerto Rican identity, nationalism, and migration. Drawing a distinction between political and cultural nationalism, Duany argues that the Puerto Rican "nation" must be understood as a new kind of translocal entity with deep cultural continuities. He documents a strong sharing of culture between island and mainland, with diasporic communities tightly linked to island life by a steady circular migration. Duany explores the Puerto Rican sense of nationhood by looking at cultural representations produced by Puerto Ricans and considering how others--American anthropologists, photographers, and museum curators, for example--have represented the nation. His sources of information include ethnographic fieldwork, archival research, interviews, surveys, censuses, newspaper articles, personal documents, and literary texts.

Download or read book The Barilla Chronicles written by Daniel Robinson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-07-08 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Campanella had trained several months for a mission that, once the details were revealed, seemed beyond any reasonable chances of success. But here he was about to take a leap of faith to accomplish a destiny that history, as it was written, said he would fulfill. The noise outside the chamber where he stood was now at an ear shattering pitch as the results of five years of scientific research were now operating at full capacity. Equipment was banging, shrieking, and churning at a fevered level yet inside the chamber Joseph Campanella heard little. The six-inch Plexiglas shield and surrounding transport portal equipment had silenced most of the clamor. What noise still filtering its way in was erased by his incredible mental ability to silence the outside world when needed. He realized that his heartbeat was elevated and his breathing slightly labored, so he used his training and began to meditate himself into a calmer state. Just as he was about to close his eyes a flash of movement caught his attention in the control room above. At that moment Kurt Schultz knew he was about to change the world, past, present, and future. He bounded down the steps toward the glass viewing area stopping just short of plowing into the structure. He steadied himself, smiled at Campanella with a victorious beaming grin, and then a flash of brilliant light consumed the control room
