Book excerpt: Research demonstrates that yoga increases one’s capacity to meet environmental demands by enhancing self-regulation capabilities. Over the past few decades, child and adolescent-specific research has shown several benefits for clinical populations including increased feelings of calm, self-control, attention, concentration, self-efficacy, body awareness, and stress reduction. Although many yoga programs targeting young people have been developed, few specifically focus on emotional and behavioral disorders. Therefore, guidelines are necessary to utilize yoga in specialized populations. This dissertation aims to make yoga’s benefits more accessible to children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders by creating a guidebook for clinicians that uses empirically supported guidelines to recommend yoga for child and adolescent clinical populations.
