Book Synopsis Schism, Heresy and Religious Protest by : Ecclesiastical History Society
Download or read book Schism, Heresy and Religious Protest written by Ecclesiastical History Society and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1972-08-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirty papers which comprise this volume are selected from those delivered at the summer and winter conferences of the Ecclesiastical History Society in 1971 and 1972. The volume opens with three important, wide ranging surveys of the nature and types of religious orthodoxy and dissent in the early Christian centuries. A further group of papers considers the emergence and treatment of earlier medieval heresies, while a number of contributions concerned with Lollardy have their focus in M. J. Wilks' examination of relations between Wyclif and Hus. For developments in more modern times K.T. Ware supplies a wider perspective to a rich and varied series of papers on more familiar matters in British, Continental and American history. In this volume, considerable attention is paid to the relationship of movements of protest and dissent to their social, intellectual, cultural and political backgrounds: in this many of the authors reflect the interest in 'religious sociology' which characterises much contemporary Continental work in the field of ecclesiastical history.

Book excerpt: “Considering the high gifts, and the strong claims of the Church of Rome and its dependencies on our admiration, reverence, love, and gratitude, how could we withstand it, as we do; how could we refrain from being melted into tenderness, and rushing into communion with it, but for the words of Truth itself, which bid us prefer it to the whole world? ‘He that loveth father or mother more than Me, is not worthy of Me.’ How could we learn to be severe, and execute judgment, but for the warning of Moses against even a divinely-gifted teacher who should preach new gods, and the anathema of St. Paul even against Angels and Apostles who should bring in a new doctrine?” Aeterna Press

Book Synopsis Truth Triumphant by : Wilkinson, Benjamin George
Download or read book Truth Triumphant written by Wilkinson, Benjamin George and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2015-02-23 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A much neglected field of study has been opened by the research of the author into the history of the Christian church from its apostolic origins to the close of the eighteenth century. Taking as his thesis the prominence given to the Church in the Wilderness in Bible prophecy, and the fact that “‘the Church in the Wilderness,’ and not the proud hierarchy enthroned in the world’s great capital, was the true church of Christ,” he has spent years developing this subject. In its present form, Truth Triumphant represents much arduous research in the libraries of Europe as well as in America. Excellent ancient sources are most difficult to obtain, but the author has been successful in gaining access to many of them. To crystallize the subject matter and make the historical facts live in modem times, the author also made extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. The doctrines of the primitive Christian church spread to Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. As grains of a mustard seed they lodged in the hearts of many Godly souls in southern France and northern Italy — people known as the Albigenses and the Waldenses. The faith of Jesus was valiantly upheld by the Church of the East. This term, as used by the author, not only includes the Syrian and Assyrian Churches, but is also the term applied to the development of apostolic Christianity throughout the lands of the East. The spirit of Christ, burning in the hearts of loyal men who would not compromise with paganism, sent them forth as missionaries to lands afar. Patrick, Columbanus, Marcos, and a host of others were missionaries to distant lands. They braved the ignorance of the barbarian, the intolerance of the apostate church leaders, and the persecution of the state in order that they might win souls to God. To unfold the dangers that were ever present in the conflict of the true church against error, to reveal the sinister working of evil and the divine strength by which men of God made truth triumphant, to challenge the Remnant Church today in its final controversy against the powers of evil, and to show the holy, unchanging message of the Bible as it has been preserved for t hose who will “fear God, and keep His commandments” — these are the sincere aims of the author as he presents this book to those who know the truth. MERLIN L. NEFF.

Book Synopsis Are We Missing Something Here by : Bruce Bivens
Download or read book Are We Missing Something Here written by Bruce Bivens and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2008-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me declares the LORD." (Jeremiah 9:23,24). A great deal of interest has been aroused in recent years concerning the Holy Spirit, His identity and His work. This is no mere coincidence. Never has there been a time when the Church has needed the Holy Spirit more and yet been so bankrupt of its "Power" than today. Could it be that we have misunderstood something crucial about the Holy Spirit? Bruce Bivens has devoted the major portion of the last three years to the intense study of the person of the Holy Spirit. He has been pleasantly surprised by the depth, beauty and simplicity of what the Lord has to say concerning the mysteries of the Godhead and the person of the Holy Spirit. And so will you. "Are We Missing Something Here?" is the product of his study and is refreshingly straightforward, logical, challenging, Bible-based and empowering. If your tired of all the propaganda floating around the Church concerning the Trinity and the Holy Spirit If your tired of belonging to a "Powerless" Church If your tired of the absence of "Victory" in your own life If you would like to know for sure just what the truth is concerning the Godhead and the Holy Spirit Then this book is for you! God would like nothing more than to pour out the Holy Spirit upon us and to give us POWER but the Holy Spirit cannot be given in its full "Power" until we have a much truer understanding and appreciation of "Who" He is, "How" He has come to be offered to us and "Why". The answers to these questions will not only astound you, they will also empower you (and your church) as never before. This book will give you those answers in a straightforward, understandable and powerful way. "Are We Missing Something Here" is written primarily for Seventh-day Adventists but is worthy of the study of Christians from ALL denominations. If your ready for "meat" instead of "milk", substance instead of ideas, the Word of God instead of human understanding if you would dare to know the Truth -- then this book is what you have been looking for. I make almost NOTHING off of this book -- that is Not my intent. I am only interested in getting this message out there and every effort has been made to do so at an affordable cost! However, I am confident that you will find this one of the BEST INVESTMENTS you have ever made (in that it provides the most BIBLICAL and SOP information you will find on the subject) -- so I strongly encourage you to invest in this book! What others are saying!: 1. "Are We Missing Something Here" - "is one of the most beautiful treatises I have ever laid hands on! It is scholarly and extremely well done...Bruce´s book proves that we cannot receive the Holy Spirit until we know all that is involved
Book Synopsis Nice and Hot Disputes by : Philip Dixon
Download or read book Nice and Hot Disputes written by Philip Dixon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-09 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the seventeenth century the doctrine of the Trinity was still a central theme in Christian Theology. By the end of the century it was fast becoming peripheral. As theologians today increasingly recognize the Trinity to be at the very heart of the Christian theology, the question of 'what went wrong' three hundred years ago is a matte of growing interest. Whereas most studies of the history of tinritarian doctrine neglect the seventeenth century almost entirely, Philip Dixon argues that this is a key period in the history and development of the doctrine and, indeed, essential for contemporary understanding. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, Dixon examines the Socinian and anti-Socinian writings of the 1640s and 1650s, including Biddle and Cheynell, and their legacy for the disputes of the 1690s; the trinitarian theology of Hobbes and the violent reaction of his critics; the debates from the Restoration to the 1690s, including Milton, Nye, and Bury; the writings of Locke and Stillingfleet; and the continuation and development of these disputes into the early eighteenth century. A final chapter offers some significant conclusions for students of systematic and historical theology alike. In the breadth of its scope and in the importance of the material uncovered, this book makes an unique contribution to the understanding of trinitarian theology and practice.
Book Synopsis The Unfolding God of Jung and Milton by : James P. Driscoll
Download or read book The Unfolding God of Jung and Milton written by James P. Driscoll and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this first extensive Jungian treatment of Milton's major poems, James P. Driscoll uses archetypal psychology to explore Milton's great themes of God, man, woman, and evil and offers readers deepened understanding of Jung's profound thoughts on Godhead. The Father, the Son, Satan, Messiah, Samson, Adam, and Eve gain new dimensions of meaning as their stories become epiphanies of the archetypes of Godhead. God and Satan of Paradise Lost are seen as the ego and the shadow of a single unfolding personality whose anima is the Holy Spirit and Milton's muse. Samson carries the Yahweh archetype examined by Jung in Answer to Job, and Messiah and Satan in Paradise Regained embody the hostile brothers archetype. Anima, animus and the individuation drive underlie the psychodynamics of Adam and Eve's fall. Driscoll draws on his critical acumen and scholarly knowledge of Renaissance literature to shed new light on Jung's psychology of religion. The Unfolding God of Jung and Milton illumines Jung's heterodox notion of Godhead as a quarternity rather than a trinity, his revolutionary concept of a divine individuation process, his radical solution to the problem of evil, and his wrestling with the feminine in Godhead. The book's glossary of Jungian terms, written for literary critics and theologians rather than clinicians, is exceptionally detailed and insightful. Beyond enriching our understanding of Jung and Milton, Driscoll's discussion contributes to theodicy, to process theology, and to the study of myths and archetypes in literature.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I.
