The primary objective of this thesis was to apply an existing taxonomy to recent libraries of two different publications, one representative of Government contracting and one representative of commercial purchasing. Analysis of the results of this classification effort provided conclusive information about taxonomical similarities and differences between contracting and purchasing literature in these two publications. A secondary objective of this thesis was to assess the differences in subject matter between the two journals and by extension, the differences between Government contracting literature and commercial purchasing literature. Book excerpt: The NCMA's Contract Management Dictionary provides useful information on the fundamental meaning and everyday use of more than 4,000 contracting terms from over 100 sources. This publication has greatly expanded upon our previous series, the Desktop Guide to Basic Contracting Terms, to include new and recent terms contract managers may encounter on the job. All terms and their definitions have been compiled from official sources or from publications by recognized experts in the field. Entries have been adapted and edited for content, consistency, and clarity of meaning. Where appropriate, contextual relevance has been provided. NCMA encourages using the Federal Acquisition Regulation(FAR), its agency supplements, the United States Code (U.S.C.), the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), and other official sources for more detailed information. Source codes accompany the definitions. These have been listed with their corresponding source information in the Source Code List beginning on page 301). If a definition is not accompanied by a source code, it is considered original to this edition. The NCMA's Contract Management Dictionary serves as a training tool and on-the-job reference for both new entrants into the field and more seasoned practitioners, as well as a study tool for certification examinations. Other study manuals and resources for professional certification examinations are also available from NCMA.

Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.

A descriptive research method was used to answer the five investigative questions. These questions addressed the major themes and neglected topics, major contributing authors, focus, perspective, and evolution of the literature. The Delphi process of questioning was used to obtain expert opinion to support the purposefulness of the study and the definitization of the investigative questions. Once the Delphi process was completed, the investigative questions were developed. The literature analysis consisted of the review of 1,131 defense contract management articles published in the National Contract Management Journal and the Contract Management magazine. The study identified Federal Acquisition Regulation System as the most popular topic in the literature while topics of a legal nature had been neglected. The 14 major contributors had written over 50 percent of the literature had a conceptual focus and its overall perspective was primarily editorial. The analysis of evolvement of the Contract Management magazine indicated that defense contract management had closely followed current events over the years. Theses.

Book excerpt: Quantitative models and computer-based tools are essential for making decisions in today's business environment. These tools are of particular importance in the rapidly growing area of supply chain management. This volume is a unified effort to provide a systematic summary of the large variety of new issues being considered, the new set of models being developed, the new techniques for analysis, and the computational methods that have become available recently. The volume's objective is to provide a self-contained, sophisticated research summary - a snapshot at this point of time - in the area of Quantitative Models for Supply Chain Management. While there are some multi-disciplinary aspects of supply chain management not covered here, the Editors and their contributors have captured many important developments in this rapidly expanding field. The 26 chapters can be divided into six categories. Basic Concepts and Technical Material (Chapters 1-6). The chapters in this category focus on introducing basic concepts, providing mathematical background and validating algorithmic tools to solve operational problems in supply chains. Supply Contracts (Chapters 7-10). In this category, the primary focus is on design and evaluation of supply contracts between independent agents in the supply chain. Value of Information (Chapters 11-13). The chapters in this category explicitly model the effect of information on decision-making and on supply chain performance. Managing Product Variety (Chapters 16-19). The chapters in this category analyze the effects of product variety and the different strategies to manage it. International Operations (Chapters 20-22). The three chapters in this category provide an overview of research in the emerging area of International Operations. Conceptual Issues and New Challenges (Chapters 23-27). These chapters outline a variety of frameworks that can be explored and used in future research efforts. This volume can serve as a graduate text, as a reference for researchers and as a guide for further development of this field.

Book excerpt: The many manifestations of international production sharing have become the organizing theme for practically any discussion on production, trade, investment, development and international economic cooperation more generally. GVCs are at the economic heart of globalization. Policies of governments are central to outcomes, influencing the establishment, configuration and operation of GVCs in numerous ways. Technological possibilities and firm behaviour are also crucial determinants of what happens in the supply chain world. Global value chains (GVCs) have become ubiquitous. The literature that attempts to understand and explain GVCs is vast, multi-disciplinary and no less complex than the phenomenon itself. This volume is an ambitious attempt at a fairly comprehensive review of literature on the subject. --Publisher description.
