Book Synopsis Romanticism and the Uses of Genre by : David Duff
Download or read book Romanticism and the Uses of Genre written by David Duff and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-11-12 with total page 1285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This wide-ranging and original book reappraises the role of genre, and genre theory, in British Romanticism. Analyzing numerous examples from 1760 to 1830, David Duff examines the generic innovations and experiments which propel the Romantic 'revolution in literature', but also the fascination with archaic forms such as the ballad, sonnet, and romance, whose revival and transformation make Romanticism a 'retro' movement as well as a revolutionary one. The tension between the drives to 'make it old' and to 'make it new' generates one of the most dynamic phases in the history of literature, whose complications are played out in the critical writing of the period as well as its creative literature. Incorporating extensive research on classification systems and reception history as well as on literary forms themselves, Romanticism and the Uses of Genre demonstrates how new ideas about the role and status of genre influenced not only authors but also publishers, editors, reviewers, and readers. The focus is on poetry, but a wider spectrum of genres is considered, a central theme being the relationship - hierarchical, competitive, combinatory - between genres. Among the topics addressed are generic primitivism and forgery; Enlightenment theory and the 'cognitive turn'; the impact of German transcendental aesthetics; organic and anti-organic form; the role of genre in the French Revolution debate; the poetics of the fragment; and the theory and practice of genre-mixing. Unprecedented in its scope and detail, this important book establishes a new way of reading Romantic literature which brings into focus for the first time its tangled relationship with genre.

Book Synopsis Lives of the Sonnet, 1787–1895 by : Marianne Van Remoortel
Download or read book Lives of the Sonnet, 1787–1895 written by Marianne Van Remoortel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a series of representative case studies, Marianne Van Remoortel traces the development of the sonnet during intense moments of change and stability, continuity and conflict, from the early Romantic period to the end of the nineteenth century. Paying particular attention to the role of the popular press, which served as a venue of innovation and as a site of recruitment for aspiring authors, Van Remoortel redefines the scope of the genre, including the ways in which its development is intricately related to issues of gender. Among her subjects are the Della Cruscans and their primary critic William Gifford, the young Samuel Taylor Coleridge and his circle, Elizabeth Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese, George Meredith's Modern Love, Dante Gabriel Rossetti's House of Life and Augusta Webster's Mother and Daughter. As women became a force to be reckoned with among the reading public and the writing community, the term 'sonnet' often operated as a satirical label that was not restricted to poetry adhering to the strict formalities of the genre. Van Remoortel's study, in its attentiveness to the sonnet's feminization during the late eighteenth century, offers important insights into the ways in which changing attitudes about gender and genre shaped critics' interpretations of the reception histories of nineteenth-century sonnet sequences.

Book Synopsis A Mind For Ever Voyaging by : W. K. Thomas
Download or read book A Mind For Ever Voyaging written by W. K. Thomas and published by University of Alberta. This book was released on 1989 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wordsworth depicted Newton, as Roubiliac may well have done in his statue of him, as voyaging, in ecstasy, through God's sensorium. In the Prelude passage from which the title A Mind For Ever Voyaging is derived, and in various others portraying Newton and science, Wordsworth seems to have written for two audiences, the general public and a much smaller, private audience, while seeking to elevate the minds of both to God. Like Pope before him, Wordsworth achieved "What oft was wrought, but ne'er so well exprest."
Book Synopsis John Bell, 1745-1831: A Memoir by : Stanley Morison
Download or read book John Bell, 1745-1831: A Memoir written by Stanley Morison and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-11-19 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Bell (1745-1831) was an English publisher. The Dictionary of National Biography has Charles Knight calling Bell a 'mischievous spirit, the very Puck of booksellers'. His 109-volume, literature-for-the-masses Poets of Great Britain Complete from Chaucer to Churchill, which rivalled Samuel Johnson's Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets (1781), was published from 1777 to 1783. Each volume cost just six shillings, at a time when similar volumes usually cost many times that. The drawings and illustrations with which Bell adorned his publications influenced later publishers, as did his abandonment of the long S. Most notable, perhaps, was Bell's joint-stock organisation of his publishing company, which defied 'the trade' - at the time, forty dominant publishing companies - in order to establish a monopoly on the best publications. In addition to the immense Poets of Great Britain, Bell also published similar volumes on Shakespeare and the British Theatre, as well as the Sunday newspaper Bell's Weekly Messenger and other periodicals.
