To reach this end, the appeal should be made to the ear and not to the eye. It is due to the recognition of this principle that the German teachers in teaching English and French, and the English teachers in teaching German and French, are meeting with so much success. Every successful teacher of language tries to make his pupils speak the new language as much as possible. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Conversation: With Directions for Self Education N ot only within the past fifty years, but actually dur ing the present decade, have there been striking changes in the manners of gentlemen, and in the tone of conver sation, as regards laying aside an affected and silly eti quetta for the natural dictates of the heart, and for a so cial code which treats the poorest man as a gentleman, so long as he behaves like one. Republicanism is, in fact, becoming the law among the most highly cultivated, while the worn-out frippery of the old school is, oddly enough, cherished principally by the wealthy and am bitious vulgar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In Classroom Conversations, two generations of educators—a mother and daughter—point us to the great thinkers who have shaped their beliefs and practices in education, and who continue to influence teachers today. Nineteen essays by educators from Dewey to Delpit offer parents and new educators an education degree in a nutshell. The Milettas frame these touchstone texts with commentary explaining why these writers resonate for them, sharing not only the personal meanings they have derived from the selections but why these writings have endured in the field over time. Brief biographies set each author in context for the lay reader. As educational fads and jargon come and go, parents and teachers alike will appreciate and find value in the wisdom distilled here. Classroom Conversations will help experienced teachers find renewed meaning in these seminal essays and will help younger teachers discover just how important the work they do can be. For parents, the book will inform and enrich their understanding of their children's educational experience.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading and Language Lessons for Evening Schools All the lessons are based upon class-room experience in teaching the foreign-born. The subject-matter is familiar to students of evening schools. In all of the lessons talking the language precedes writing it. This textbook is designed for use in classes composed of students of several nationalities as well as in classes of but one nationality. It may also be used in classes of native-born adults who do not read and write English. Evening-school students wish to know the vernacular, both spoken and written, and are not concerned with language as a means of understanding literature. They study English for the sake of communicating with others, and need an accurate and fairly large vocabulary of words relating to common matters. The aim of this work is simplicity and logical sequence, hence the sentence or unit is studied before the ele ments which compose that unit.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher Speaks The second aspect has to do with the personal preparation of the teacher. Some attention is given to the general problems of scholarship, and in these instances the part that effective speech can play is set forth. In developing this aspect of the text a great deal of emphasis is placed upon the speech needs of the teacher. To help the student become competent in this area, the discussion is supplemented by exercises and suggested ways of self-evaluation and evaluation by colleagues. It is hoped that such practice will firmly establish the habit of critical self-analysis as a means to continued improvement. The third aspect deals with the problems of interpersonal communications in out-of-class situations as they affect the teacher's professional success. Emphasis is placed upon the employment interview and other types of personal conference, including the counseling conference. Certainly the skills in volved in sharing ideas in face-to-face situations play a large part in the teacher's total effectiveness. Contacts with parents, community leaders, and school personnel represent occasions in which the teacher's speech personality is a major factor in his success. The fourth aspect is perhaps the key to teaching success: the continued growth and improvement of communicational ability. Though other factors are necessarily involved, the level of communication is an index of the level of learning. All teachers are concerned with the quality of the student's speech. They must be able to recognize difficulties, deviations, and maladjustments related to speech abilities. This aspect leans for its technical detail upon the earlier discussion of the prin ciples underlying the quality of the teacher's speech, but the principles are directly applied to the student in this phase of the discussion. Further, in order that the classroom itself can be actively a learning laboratory, many suggestions are made for the use of speech and for possible speaking assignments in functional speaking situations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talking With the Pencil: Primary Lessons in Language In preparing this little book the author has endeavored to make the study of the right use of language in its written form pleasant and attractive to the youngest pupils. He has constantly had in mind the fact that children learn best by doing and therefore he has made every lesson an exercise in the practical use of words. Beginning with the simple idea of a word as the name of something, the learner is led by easy steps to the acquisition of a knowledge of the first principles of English grammar. While this is being done he is also acquiring the ability to write correctly - that is, to talk with the pencil properly and fluently. These lessons are sufficient for one years work, and will prepare the pupil to take up and pursue with increased interest the study of language in its more complex relations. Teachers will observe that every lesson herein presented is suggestive of much additional oral instruction. Indeed, every recitation should begin with a well-planned talk, leading up to and helping to elucidate the particular points to be learned. The suggestions to teachers, printed in smaller type at the head of the lesson, will be found valuable in preparing these oral introductions. But the wise teacher will not stop with merely following these brief hints; she will introduce many original devices of her own, and will amplify and extend each lesson by giving many additional exercises, both oral and written. Gradually, however, teachers have become convinced that only a small number of these texts lend themselves readily to live and interesting conversation. Every teacher, I suppose, has been startled by the discovery that easy plays with their short, crisp speeches, which at first blush would seem to furnish ideal material for class-room conversation, are really almost useless for the purpose. The only subject matter that always causes live interest on the part of pupils in conversation is that which is based upon the objects and experiences in their daily environment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading and Speaking: Familiar Talks to Young Men Who Would Speak Well in Public; Designed as a Text-Book for Colleges and Higher Schools, and Also for General Use This collection of suggestions to would be speakers consists of most informal talks on matters of importance to all young men; for we are a nation of speech makers. Wendell Phillips used to say that as soon as the Yankee baby could sit up in his cradle he called the nursery to order, and proceeded to address the house. There are some rules in the book, but they are those which my experience has taught me ought to be known by every Speaker; and as there are not so many as to be burden some, I trust that they may be learned by every young man who has this book. I have put upon these pages suggestions not usually found in print. Some of them may seem trivial; but I have been making them to students in the class-room over and over again. Why not print them? I do not Claim any originality, or to say what has not been said in one way or another by many teachers. In deed, there is no new road to successful public speaking. But I have tried to group together, in small compass and convenient form, suggestions, rules, hints, encouragements, warnings, examples, illustrations, all having bearing on the noble art of oratory, and all likely to be helpful.
