Book excerpt: A Child's History of England is a book written by Charles Dickens published in serial form in the magazine Household Words, which was edited by Dickens. The first instalment of the book appeared on January 25, 1851 and the last instalment was pblished on December 25, 1852. Although a work of non fiction, Dickens brought his skills as a novelist to his description of the key events and personages of English history, resulting in a vivid and highly readable account which enjoyed immense popularity as a serial and, later, in book form. The instalments which were first published in the magazine Household Words, were then collected and re-published in a 3-volume book also entitled A Child's History of England. The book was adopted as a text book in British schools and was in use well into the first half of the 20th century, despite the fact that many critics pointed out that the book was not well researched and not always historically accurate.A Child's History of England covers the period of English history from approximately 50 B.C. to around 1669 A.D., with an additional summary of the events leading up to the reign of Queen Victoria.

Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-A Child's History of England by Charles Dickens. This book contains a historical context, where past events or the study and narration of these events are examined. The historical context refers to the circumstances and incidents surrounding an event. This context is formed by everything that, in some way, influences the event when it happens. A fact is always tied to its time: that is, to its time. Therefore, when analyzing events that took place tens, hundreds or thousands of years ago, it is essential to know the historical context to understand them. Otherwise, we would be analyzing and judging what happened in a totally different era with a current perspective. It is a Charles Dickens book. It first appeared serially in Household Words, from January 25, 1851 to December 10, 1853. Dickens also published the work in book form in three volumes: the first volume on December 20, 1851, the second on December 25, December 1852 and the third on December 24, 1853. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There were two Popes at this time (as if one were not enough!), and their quarrels involved Europe in a great deal of trouble." If only history could always be this fun! Unlike Shakespeare’s history plays before him, Charles Dickens doesn’t fictionalize British history here as much as he just makes it incredibly readable and entertaining. A Child's History of England is written chronologically with no complicated analysis, but full of great stories and anecdotes. It reads like a novel but is fairly accurate, and any child as well as adult will come away from it with good knowledge of basic English history. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Book excerpt: A Child's History of England If you look at a world map, you will see two islands in the sea in the upper left corner of the eastern hemisphere. They are England, Scotland and Ireland. England and Scotland make up the bulk of these islands. Ireland is next in size. The small neighboring islands, which are so small on the map that they are mere dots, are mainly small chunks of Scotland, separated, dare I say, over a long period of time, by the power of restless water.

Book excerpt: The Spirit of the People - An Analysis of the English Mind by Ford Madox Ford the English novelist, poet, critic and editor whose journals were instrumental in the development of early 20th-century English literature. Ford writes from the affectionately critical standpoint of an observer who feels his Englishness all the more intensely for being aware that he is half a foreigner. This work serves as a great introduction to anyone who wants to understand something of the pleasures, the beauties and the harsh realities of Edwardian England. This title was originally published in 1907, here we are republished with an introductory biography of the author.
