Book excerpt: In a futuristic world where creativity has been banned in favor of "more useful" social and economic endeavors, Mancy Fairlight secretly paints pictures in her run-down apartment. Despite her illegal activities, Mancy really only desires one thing: to be left alone to raise her six-year-old son Rembrandt. However, Mancy lives in constant fear that one day the same government that had executed her husband will discover her secret and come for her family. When Remy begins to exhibit extraordinary musical talent, Mancy's secret becomes even harder to keep adn her worst fears become reality. Unwittingly, she catches the attention of both General Starrk, the man who had engineered her husband's public execution, as well as a dark stranger who has links to her family's past and, if he has his way, their future as well... Chance for the Future is an adventurous, humorous and even romantic roller coaster ride of self discovery and creative awareness, ultimately demonstrating that it only requires one person to destroy a world...and only one to revive it.

Book excerpt: A major new book overturning our assumptions about how evolution works Earth’s natural history is full of fascinating instances of convergence: phenomena like eyes and wings and tree-climbing lizards that have evolved independently, multiple times. But evolutionary biologists also point out many examples of contingency, cases where the tiniest change—a random mutation or an ancient butterfly sneeze—caused evolution to take a completely different course. What role does each force really play in the constantly changing natural world? Are the plants and animals that exist today, and we humans ourselves, inevitabilities or evolutionary flukes? And what does that say about life on other planets? Jonathan Losos reveals what the latest breakthroughs in evolutionary biology can tell us about one of the greatest ongoing debates in science. He takes us around the globe to meet the researchers who are solving the deepest mysteries of life on Earth through their work in experimental evolutionary science. Losos himself is one of the leaders in this exciting new field, and he illustrates how experiments with guppies, fruit flies, bacteria, foxes, and field mice, along with his own work with anole lizards on Caribbean islands, are rewinding the tape of life to reveal just how rapid and predictable evolution can be. Improbable Destinies will change the way we think and talk about evolution. Losos's insights into natural selection and evolutionary change have far-reaching applications for protecting ecosystems, securing our food supply, and fighting off harmful viruses and bacteria. This compelling narrative offers a new understanding of ourselves and our role in the natural world and the cosmos.

Book excerpt: Can an arranged marriage between a prince and a Terran Alliance Marine change the future of a star system? Prince Phindarius Valea Janus Duranda is the fourth child of the king of a small star system known as The Brel Domain. He’s resigned to the kind of diplomatic marriage that princes must endure. His life is destined to be about service to the throne and to Brel. It doesn’t matter how he feels about it. Major Kellan Rhodes’ life is about the Marines. Currently, the Marines require him to marry a prince and seal the deal between the Terran Alliance and the agriculturally rich Brel star system. He doesn’t love the idea of an arranged marriage but he does love his career. So, as Marines do, he’ll get the job done, no matter what gets in the way—or who. But the King of Brel’s star system is engaging some tricky manipulations, trying to push reactionary Brel into a modern universe. Love doesn’t enter into political decisions. But emotions aren’t like business deals or diplomatic negotiations. Revolution is in the air. Plots and coups are hiding behind aristocratic manners. Can Phin and Kellan find a way to love and starting a family? Can they even stay alive? Key words related to this book: gay romance, mm romance, scifi romance, mpreg, male pregnancy

"Home is the place where our life stories begin. It is where we are understood, embraced, and accepted. It is a sanctuary of safety and security, a place to which we can always return. Down in the dank basement, amidst my moldy, hoarded food and beloved worm-eaten books, I dreamed that my real home, the place where my story had begun, was out there somewhere, and one day I was going to find it." Taken from his mother at age three, Steve Klakowicz lives a terrifying existence. Caught in the clutches of a cruel foster family and subjected to constant abuse, he finds his only refuge in a box of books gifted to him by a kind stranger. In these books, he discovers new worlds he can only imagine and gains hope that one day he might have a different life, that one day he will find his true home. Armed with just a single clue, Steve embarks on an extraordinary quest for his identity, only to find that nothing is as it appears. A Chance in the World is the unbelievable true story of a broken boy destined to become a man of resilience, determination, and vision. Through it all, Steve's story teaches us that no matter how broken our past, we have it in us to create a new beginning and to build a new place, where love awaits.

Darek Christiansen is almost a dream bachelor—oldest son in the large Christiansen clan, heir to their historic Evergreen Lake Resort, and doting father. But he’s also wounded and angry since the tragic death of his wife, Felicity. No woman in Deep Haven dares come near. New assistant county attorney Ivy Madison simply doesn’t know any better when she bids on Darek at the charity auction. Nor does she know that when she crafted a plea bargain three years ago to keep Jensen Atwood out of jail and in Deep Haven fulfilling community service, she was releasing the man responsible for Felicity’s death. All Ivy knows is that the Christiansens feel like the family she’s always longed for. And once she gets past Darek’s tough exterior, she finds a man she could spend the rest of her life with. Which scares her almost as much as Darek learning of her involvement in his wife’s case. Caught between new love and old grudges, Darek must decide if he can set aside the past for a future with Ivy—a future more and more at risk as an approaching wildfire threatens to wipe out the Christiansen resort and Deep Haven itself.

Book excerpt: Finding Home, Hope, and a Future: Achieving Integrated Social Services at Harbor Care tells the story of a trail blazing nonprofit in Nashua, New Hampshire. Originally named Harbor Homes, in July 1982 the newly incorporated organization began work in its remodeled group home supporting nine clients with persistent mental illnesses. Forty years later, the nonprofit, now named Harbor Care, owns twenty-eight facilities and is supporting over five thousand individuals and families, 93 percent of whom are low-income. Currently Harbor Care’s clients, in a wide variety of groups needing assistance, access safe housing, medical/dental/mental health care, substance misuse treatment, and other critical supports such as food, transportation, and employment services. All are provided within an integrated system of social services. With the goal of helping clients become more independent, the nonprofit’s policies and practices have significantly reduced homelessness in the city and assisted clients to live self-directed, productive lives. Finding Home, Hope, and a Future explains how such an extensive network of clients and services came to be by highlighting personal stories of individuals who helped build the pioneering organization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative study, Crystal Sanders explores how working-class black women, in collaboration with the federal government, created the Child Development Group of Mississippi (CDGM) in 1965, a Head Start program that not only gave poor black children access to early childhood education but also provided black women with greater opportunities for political activism during a crucial time in the unfolding of the civil rights movement. Women who had previously worked as domestics and sharecroppers secured jobs through CDGM as teachers and support staff and earned higher wages. The availability of jobs independent of the local white power structure afforded these women the freedom to vote in elections and petition officials without fear of reprisal. But CDGM's success antagonized segregationists at both the local and state levels who eventually defunded it. Tracing the stories of the more than 2,500 women who staffed Mississippi's CDGM preschool centers, Sanders's book remembers women who went beyond teaching children their shapes and colors to challenge the state's closed political system and white supremacist ideology and offers a profound example for future community organizing in the South.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most popular source of theological hope for American Christians is that of Jrgen Moltmann. Preachers, teachers, and lay people reflect Moltmann's influence, with their hope in a this-worldly eschatology and a suffering God. However, an exclusive reliance on that hope deprives the church of crucial resources in the face of global economic, environmental, and military crises. This book explores Moltmannian hope and considers its costs before looking elsewhere for additional contributions, from Thomas Aquinas's theological virtue of hope to nihilism and beyond, in order to encourage the church to sustain and practice hope in Jesus Christ, our only hope.

Book excerpt: This urgent and eye-opening book makes the case that protecting humanity's future is the central challenge of our time. If all goes well, human history is just beginning. Our species could survive for billions of years - enough time to end disease, poverty, and injustice, and to flourish in ways unimaginable today. But this vast future is at risk. With the advent of nuclear weapons, humanity entered a new age, where we face existential catastrophes - those from which we could never come back. Since then, these dangers have only multiplied, from climate change to engineered pathogens and artificial intelligence. If we do not act fast to reach a place of safety, it will soon be too late. Drawing on over a decade of research, The Precipice explores the cutting-edge science behind the risks we face. It puts them in the context of the greater story of humanity: showing how ending these risks is among the most pressing moral issues of our time. And it points the way forward, to the actions and strategies that can safeguard humanity. An Oxford philosopher committed to putting ideas into action, Toby Ord has advised the US National Intelligence Council, the UK Prime Minister's Office, and the World Bank on the biggest questions facing humanity. In The Precipice, he offers a startling reassessment of human history, the future we are failing to protect, and the steps we must take to ensure that our generation is not the last. "A book that seems made for the present moment." —New Yorker
