Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers new critical approaches for the study of adaptations, abridgments, translations, parodies, and mash-ups that occur internationally in contemporary children’s culture. It follows recent shifts in adaptation studies that call for a move beyond fidelity criticism, a paradigm that measures the success of an adaptation by the level of fidelity to the "original" text, toward a methodology that considers the adaptation to be always already in conversation with the adapted text. This book visits children’s literature and culture in order to consider the generic, pedagogical, and ideological underpinnings that drive both the process and the product. Focusing on novels as well as folktales, films, graphic novels, and anime, the authors consider the challenges inherent in transforming the work of authors such as William Shakespeare, Charles Perrault, L.M. Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and A.A. Milne into new forms that are palatable for later audiences particularly when—for perceived ideological or political reasons—the textual transformation is not only unavoidable but entirely necessary. Contributors consider the challenges inherent in transforming stories and characters from one type of text to another, across genres, languages, and time, offering a range of new models that will inform future scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Charles Ferrall and Anna Jackson argue that the Victorians created a concept of adolescence that lasted into the twentieth century and yet is strikingly at odds with post-Second World War notions of adolescence as a period of "storm and stress." In the enormously popular "juvenile" literature of the period, primarily boys’ and girls’ own adventure and school stories, adolescence is acknowledged as a time of sexual awareness and yet also of a romantic idealism that is lost with marriage, a time when boys and girls acquire adult duties and responsibilities and yet have not had to assume the roles of breadwinner or household manager. The book reveals a concept of adolescence as significant as the Romantic cult of childhood that preceded it, which will be of interest to scholars of both children’s literature and Victorian culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elinor M. Brent-Dyer was born Gladys Eleanor May Dyer on April 6, 1894 in South Shields, in the northeast of England. She wrote over a hundred books of children’s literature during her life. From lower middle-class roots, she went to a small private school and became a teacher after attending the City of Leeds Training College. As a teacher, she worked at both public and private schools, and even as a governess. She had an interest in the theater, and her first book Gerry Goes to School (the first in her La Rochelle series) was written in 1922 --for the child actress Hazel Bainbridge. About this time, inspired by a vacation to the Austrian Alps, she wrote The School at the Chalet in 1923 (the first in her Chalet School series). Brent-Dyer continued to teach and tried rather unsuccessfully to run her own school from 1938 to 1948. After this, she quit teaching but continued writing until her death on September 20, 1969 in Redhill, Surrey.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girls' school stories are still dismissed by adult critics as less significant than boys' school stories, despite recent academic recognition of the importance of children's literature generally. This encyclopaedia helps to redress the balance with over 400 entries on girls' school story writers. There is an entry for every British, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand author known to the editorial team who had published at least one full-length story between 1876 and 1999. In the introduction, Sue Sims provides an overview of the development of the girls' school story and the influence on the genre of key authors, works and publishers. Rosemary Auchmuty's analysis of the critical response which these works have received highlights the different reactions of those who work in the book world, feminist critics and fans of the stories. A huge amount of original research is evident in the detailed entries by Sue Sims, Hilary Clare and a number of invited contributors, all experts in their field. Readers will agree that this encyclopaedia demonstrates that as a body of work, girls' school stories have played an enormous part in women's history and the evolution of children's literature in general.

This period is marked by certain characteristics, such as stories of groups of children bonded together, the emergence of strong female protagonists, the "career books", and a consciously subdued presence of pain and suffering. Many of these works are valued for the window they provided upon a culture now gone
