Book Synopsis A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe by : Manfred Pohl
Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book Synopsis From Partisan Banking to Open Access by : Qian Lu
Download or read book From Partisan Banking to Open Access written by Qian Lu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-09 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did banking in early nineteenth-century Massachusetts evolve? Lu provides a compelling narrative about the connection between inclusive political systems and open access economies, hypothesizing that entry into banking was firstly made upon partisan grounds before later becoming open access/free entry. Lu investigates state level institutional change and studies the transition to open access from an economic perspective. What was the relationship between banking and political elites? Why were elites, who enjoyed privileges under dominant institutions, willing to dissolve these institutions and eliminate their privileges? The author provides new insights into American economic history, explaining how a society moves from limited access to one of openness.

Book excerpt: Since opening for business on November 16, 1914, the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has been an integral part of the economic life of the entire New England area. From the outbreak of World War I through the technological challenges of Y2K and the dark days following the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Boston Fed has played a prominent role in providing stability and strength to the region. Beyond its financial role, the story of the Boston Fed is also the story of Boston and all of New England. The transformation of the local economy, the changing face of the area's population and workforce, the march of technology, the emerging roles of women and minorities--all are reflected in the history of the bank, its employees, and the people and institutions that it serves. As the Fed approaches its centennial year, it looks back upon an era of our nation's history unprecedented in both its challenges and triumphs.
