Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This richly illustrated book provides an introduction to twentieth century Dutch architecture. Ten concise chapters, each covering a single decade, discuss a selection of characteristic buildings, referring to the major events and developments of each period. Architectural history is not defined here as a cyclical succession of styles or generations, but as a heterogenous collection of buildings and designs which are often based on equally differing approaches. Apart from the internationally renowned masterpieces by architects like Berlage, Oud, Duiker, Van Eyck and Koolhaas this book includes numerous lesser known buildings which underline the versatility and quality of Dutch architecture.

Book Synopsis Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century by : Freek Schmidt
Download or read book Passion and Control: Dutch Architectural Culture of the Eighteenth Century written by Freek Schmidt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-28 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion and Control explores Dutch architectural culture of the eighteenth century, revealing the central importance of architecture to society in this period and redefining long-established paradigms of early modern architectural history. Architecture was a passion for many of the men and women in this book; wealthy patrons, burgomasters, princes and scientists were all in turn infected with architectural mania. It was a passion shared with artists, architects and builders, and a vast cast of Dutch society who contributed to a complex web of architectural discourse and who influenced building practice. The author presents a rich tapestry of sources to reconstruct the cultural context and meaning of these buildings as they were perceived by contemporaries, including representations in texts, drawings and prints, and builds on recent research by cultural historians on consumerism, material culture and luxury, print culture and the public sphere, and the history of ideas and mentalities.
Book Synopsis Dutch Modernism by : Donald Langmead
Download or read book Dutch Modernism written by Donald Langmead and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1996-10-11 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical guide to the English-language literature, Dutch Modernism demonstrates the importance of the Dutch contribution to 20th-century architecture. Holland's valuable role in the creation of modernism (1900-1940) was all but ignored until 30 years ago; it is significant that more than a third of the English-language literature has appeared since 1975. This guide is comprehensive; it summarizes, describes, and evaluates 1,250 references in the light of contemporary theory and practice. This work is of interest to scholars, students, and practitioners. The introduction outlines Holland's unique place in the development of international Modernism, 1900-1940, and explores the phenomenon of its eventual recognition in Britain and the United States. Although not an exhaustive study, this work presents all the areas of study and helpfully evaluates most entries, saving the user time and energy. A number of Dutch publications have been included, some because they are seminal theoretical works and others because they are rich in images. As a guide to English-language sources, Dutch Modernism reaches a wider audience than earlier Dutch and Italian bibliographies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Reconstructs the frames of reference that informed the practice of architecture in the Netherlands during the last century. The book provides a detailed documentation of twenty key architectural works, based on the original plans. Each of these works embodies a specific response to an architectural problem and represents a crystallization point of one of the various approaches that can be distinguished within the gamut of design strategies, namely a traditionalist, an expressionist, a functionalist, a rationalist and a post-modernist approach. These five approaches to architecture are reconstructed by analysing the interconnection between a building's form, construction and function. Their architectural and social significance is examined in five separate essays that precede the documentation. Difficult though it may be to classify individual buildings according to shared functional, constructional and formal characteristics, this does not mean that it is impossible to discern certain lines of development running through Dutch architectural production. Those lines are clearly set out in a removable 'Calendar'. One hundred representative buildings, one for each year, are placed chronologically against the backdrop of technological and social developments. The 'Calendar' traces a path for today's designers, through the maze of stories about architecture, to the buildings themselves"--Back cover.

Book Synopsis The Art of Building by : Auke Van Der Woud
Download or read book The Art of Building written by Auke Van Der Woud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002: In the second half of the 18th century, philosophy provided the fundamental characteristics of architechture. The architects of the 19th century then introduced the empirical comparative study of buildings. This phenomenon has usually been regarded exclusively in terms of historicism, but this is to underestimate the fact that they were architects. The problems for which they sought solutions did not belong to the past, but were part of their own age or the future. The architecture of the past was, to the 19th-century architect, significant to a large degree as a silent witness of a bygone era - a representation of beauty. Historical architecture provided study material for their inquiries into the aesthetic "laws" that they hoped would give the 19th century a splendid contemporary architecture. The art of building, as a way of visibly edifying society, was the most important of all the arts, with architectural theory showing the way to this lofty purpose. This book takes this as a starting point. Focusing on place as well as time, the text discusses the Dutch architects who contributed to this idea, discussing several of the most important, but ultimately seeing their activities, not as the cause, but the expression of movements that continuously changed the face of architecture. The particularly "Dutch" nature of architecture took "visual beauty" to result from the visible success of technical intelligence and creativity rather than philosophy and aesthetics. The grand-19th century themes discussed in the book are, the author suggests, somewhat "un-Dutch", originating as they did from an idealist, intellectual tradition.

Book Synopsis The Art of Building by : Auke van der Woud
Download or read book The Art of Building written by Auke van der Woud and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Auke van der Woud reveals how, caught in the tide of expansion and change sweeping across Europe at the time, Dutch architects, patrons and builders fought to consolidate their country's history and cultural identity through architecture. He shows that rival factions, in an attempt to sequester the mystique of the Dutch Golden Age, advocated various ideas and theories about Gothic, Classical and Dutch Renaissance architecture, but that in the end architectural practice made architectural theory irrelevant. Extensively illustrated with period photographs, many by the pioneer of Dutch photography, Jacob Olie, this book is an excellent introduction to the development of nineteenth-century architecture in The Netherlands."--BOOK JACKET.
