Book excerpt: Applied Probability and Stochastic Processes is an edited work written in honor of Julien Keilson. This volume has attracted a host of scholars in applied probability, who have made major contributions to the field, and have written survey and state-of-the-art papers on a variety of applied probability topics, including, but not limited to: perturbation method, time reversible Markov chains, Poisson processes, Brownian techniques, Bayesian probability, optimal quality control, Markov decision processes, random matrices, queueing theory and a variety of applications of stochastic processes. The book has a mixture of theoretical, algorithmic, and application chapters providing examples of the cutting-edge work that Professor Keilson has done or influenced over the course of his highly-productive and energetic career in applied probability and stochastic processes. The book will be of interest to academic researchers, students, and industrial practitioners who seek to use the mathematics of applied probability in solving problems in modern society.

Book excerpt: On May 27-31, 1985, a series of symposia was held at The University of Western Ontario, London, Canada, to celebrate the 70th birthday of Pro fessor V. M. Joshi. These symposia were chosen to reflect Professor Joshi's research interests as well as areas of expertise in statistical science among faculty in the Departments of Statistical and Actuarial Sciences, Economics, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and Philosophy. From these symposia, the six volumes which comprise the "Joshi Festschrift" have arisen. The 117 articles in this work reflect the broad interests and high quality of research of those who attended our conference. We would like to thank all of the contributors for their superb cooperation in helping us to complete this project. Our deepest gratitude must go to the three people who have spent so much of their time in the past year typing these volumes: Jackie Bell, Lise Constant, and Sandy Tarnowski. This work has been printed from "carnera ready" copy produced by our Vax 785 computer and QMS Lasergraphix printers, using the text processing software TEX. At the initiation of this project, we were neophytes in the use of this system. Thank you, Jackie, Lise, and Sandy, for having the persistence and dedication needed to complete this undertaking.
Book Synopsis A Celebration of Statistics by : Anthony C. Atkinson
Download or read book A Celebration of Statistics written by Anthony C. Atkinson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Statistical Institute was founded in 1885 and is therefore one of the world's oldest international scientific societies. The field of statistics is still expanding rapidly and possesses a rich variety of applications in many areas of human activity such as science, government, business, industry, and everyday affairs. In consequence, the celebration of the Institute's centenary in 1985 is of considerable interest not only to statisticians but also more widely to the international scientific community. As part of its centennial celebration planning the Institute decided to publish a volume of papers representing the immensely wide range of interests encompassed by statistics in its international context, viewed both from a historical and from a contemporary standpoint. We were fortunate in securing the services of Anthony Atkinson and Stephen Fienberg as Editors of this volume: they have worked hard over a period of several years to put together a most fascinating collection of papers. On behalf of the Institute it is my pleasant duty to thank them and the authors for their contributions. J. DURBIN, President International Statistical Institute Preface The papers in this volume were prepared to help celebrate the centenary of the International Statistical Institute. During the lSI's first 100 years statistics has matured, both as a scientific discipline and as a profession, in ways that the lSI's founders could not possibly have imagined.

Book excerpt: Sri Gopal Mohanty has made pioneering contributions to lattice path counting and its applications to probability and statistics. This is clearly evident from his lifetime publications list and the numerous citations his publications have received over the past three decades. My association with him began in 1982 when I came to McMaster Univer sity. Since then, I have been associated with him on many different issues at professional as well as cultural levels; I have benefited greatly from him on both these grounds. I have enjoyed very much being his colleague in the statistics group here at McMaster University and also as his friend. While I admire him for his honesty, sincerity and dedication, I appreciate very much his kindness, modesty and broad-mindedness. Aside from our common interest in mathematics and statistics, we both have great love for Indian classical music and dance. We have spent numerous many different subjects associated with the Indian music and hours discussing dance. I still remember fondly the long drive (to Amherst, Massachusetts) I had a few years ago with him and his wife, Shantimayee, and all the hearty discussions we had during that journey. Combinatorics and applications of combinatorial methods in probability and statistics has become a very active and fertile area of research in the recent past.

Download or read book Records written by Barry C. Arnold and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first and only comprehensive guide to modern record theory andits applications Although it is often thought of as a special topic in orderstatistics, records form a unique area, independent of the study ofsample extremes. Interest in records has increased steadily overthe years since Chandler formulated the theory of records in 1952.Numerous applications of them have been developed in such far-flungfields as meteorology, sports analysis, hydrology, and stock marketanalysis, to name just a few. And the literature on the subjectcurrently comprises papers and journal articles numbering in thehundreds. Which is why it is so nice to have this book devotedexclusively to this lively area of statistics. Written by an exceptionally well-qualified author team, Recordspresents a comprehensive treatment of record theory and itsapplications in a variety of disciplines. With the help of amultitude of fascinating examples, Professors Arnold, Balakrishnan, and Nagaraja help readers quickly master basic and advanced recordvalue concepts and procedures, from the classical record valuemodel to random and multivariate record models. The book follows arational textbook format, featuring witty and insightful chapterintroductions that help smooth transitions from one topic toanother and challenging chapter-end exercises, which expand on thematerial covered. An extensive bibliography and numerous referencesthroughout the text specify sources for further readings onrelevant topics. Records is a valuable professional resource forprobabilists and statisticians, in addition to appliedstatisticians, meteorologists, hydrologists, market analysts, andsports analysts. It also makes an excellent primary text forcourses in record theory and a supplement to order statisticscourses.
Book Synopsis Algorithmic Probability by : Marcel F. Neuts
Download or read book Algorithmic Probability written by Marcel F. Neuts and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-07-01 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text collects more than 400 problems in combinatorics, derived distributions, discrete and continuous Markov chains, and models requiring a computer experimental approach. The first book to deal with simplified versions of models encountered in the contemporary statistical or engineering literature, Algorithmic Probability emphasizes correct interpretation of numerical results and visualization of the dynamics of stochastic processes. A significant contribution to the field of applied probability, Algorithmic Probability is ideal both as a secondary text in probability courses and as a reference. Engineers and operations analysts seeking solutions to practical problems will find it a valuable resource, as will advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, statistics, operations research, industrial and electrical engineering, and computer science.
