Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Broader Elementary Education This book is written primarily for two classes of readers: (1) those who, having enjoyed the advantages of college or normal-school training, occupy positions which make it their duty to shape the educational policy of their community; (2) those who, as students, are preparing for such positions. With the needs of these classes in mind, it has seemed to the author desirable to set forth as explicitly as might be that in the very conception of education certain presuppositions are involved, and all the more desirable since opinions at variance with these presuppositions are widely prevalent. In the conviction, also, that there can be no fundamental study of education that does not seek to ascertain the end education should strive to reach, and the impulses and capacities it must appeal to, and that there can be no rational teaching that is not based on definite notions as to these matters, he has endeavored to present those notions as clearly as may be; and he has sought to base all his recommendations as to practice upon his conclusions. A prominent feature of the book is the emphasis laid upon the doctrine that there is a place for the will in education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The curriculum of elementary schools is a very important factor in the education of children. Students need to understand and express themselves in a language which can be the Mother Tongue only at the elementary level. Curriculum development is an important part of the education process, ensuring that classes at all levels, from early childhood to post-secondary, are best designed to help students be successful in learning the material and gaining the skills needed to continue to advance. Evaluation essentially is the provision of information for the sake of facilitating decision making at various stages of curriculum development. This information may pertain to the program as a complete entity or only to some of its components. Evaluation also implies the selection of criteria, collection and analysis of data. It includes obtaining information for use in judging the worth of a programme and procedure. It is a comprehensive term and transcends standardized tests covering all means of ascertaining the results of construction. A curriculum framework is an organized plan or set of standards or learning outcomes that defines the content to be learned in terms of clear, definable standards of what the student should know and be able to do. The supporters of learner-centered Curriculum give importance to individual development and they wants to organize the curriculum according to the needs and interest of learners, there are fundamental differences in this approach and the subject-centered design. The curriculum framers for elementary schools should also associate the parents and specialists while developing the curriculum for elementary education.

Book excerpt: “Follow the science.” How often have you picked up an education book to read how, according to the authors, the system is broken, failing, and flailing—but their ideas for fixing it will bring about a miraculous transformation? That’s not the approach of this volume. Sure, the editors believe that our system of education could achieve significantly better results. But they also recognize that schools have gotten better over time. One explanation is the progress schools have made in “following the science”. Especially in early reading and math instruction, scholars know more now about what works than we did in the past, and more schools are putting that knowledge into practice. Now, in the wake of a horrific pandemic, even the best elementary schools are struggling to help their students get their momentum back again. In this book, the editors share high-quality syntheses of evidence and insights from leading educators, academics, and other experts. And they communicate those findings in user-friendly language, with an understanding of the real-world complexities of schools and classrooms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive evaluation study of elementary education in Israel conducted over several years and completed in 1977. The study concentrates on Jewish schools, but some data are presented from parallel studies in the Arab Schools. A notable feature of the study is its unusually large scope both in size and content. It sampled nearly ten percent of Jewish schools and fifteen percent of Arab schools. The content includes a great variety of areas: cultural origins, home conditions and socialization patterns of pupils, conditions and practices in schools, teachers' and principals' backgrounds and their attitudes toward central issues in education, pupils' personality characteristics and motivations related to school experience, their learning abilities and achievements in five major school subjects. Special emphasis is given to the disadvantaged pupils, and an examination of the problem of equality of educational opportunity. This study's uniqueness lies in a novel approach in the measurement and analysis of scholastic achievements. Like all studies in the "psychometric" tradition, it places pupils in a position related to an advantaged pupil group. But test construction and most data analyses were carried out by the criterion-reference approach combined with a notion of "master learning." This enabled presentation of the absolute achievement level of a pupil or a pupil group vis-a-vis the optimal and minimal requirements of the curriculum and each school subject, as well as for its various content area. This approach permits much more than the traditional methods, utilization of results for deliberation and revision in educational policies. This applies particularly to curriculum construction and methods of instruction. It may also lead to a more appropriate definition of the disadvantaged pupil. Five chapters of the study present a historical review and sociological analysis of the problems of Israeli education and deal with specific methodological considerations. The twelve following chapters present detailed results and analysis for each topic of investigation.
