Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Broader Elementary Education In the conviction, also, that there can be no fundamental study of education that does not seek to ascertain the end education should strive to reach, and the impulses and capacities it must appeal to, and that there can be no rational teaching that is not based on definite notions as to these matters, he has endeavored to present those notions as clearly as may be; and he has sought to base all his recommendations as to practice upon his conclusions. A prominent feature of the book is the emphasis laid upon the doctrine that there is a place for the will in education. The current theory inherited from Herbart, and by him from Rousseau, that everything should be made to depend upon interest, that there should be no must in education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Broader Elementary Education This book is written primarily for two classes of readers: (1) those who, having enjoyed the advantages of college or normal-school training, occupy positions which make it their duty to shape the educational policy of their community; (2) those who, as students, are preparing for such positions. With the needs of these classes in mind, it has seemed to the author desirable to set forth as explicitly as might be that in the very conception of education certain presuppositions are involved, and all the more desirable since opinions at variance with these presuppositions are widely prevalent. In the conviction, also, that there can be no fundamental study of education that does not seek to ascertain the end education should strive to reach, and the impulses and capacities it must appeal to, and that there can be no rational teaching that is not based on definite notions as to these matters, he has endeavored to present those notions as clearly as may be; and he has sought to base all his recommendations as to practice upon his conclusions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Education In considering the reasons for the increase of the length Of the term Of the elementary school and its adoption of a graded course of study, one comes upon the most important item Of improvement that belongs to the recent history Of education, namely, the introduction of professionally trained teachers. The first normal school established in the United States recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. It was founded at Lexington, Massachusetts, in 1839. The num ber of public normal schools supported by the state or municipal governments has increased since that year to 167, enrolling students, and graduating nearly per annum. To this number are to be added 1 78 private normal schools, with an aggregate of students and graduates. In 1880 there were 240 normal school students in each million of inhabitants; in 1897 there were 936, or nearly four times as many in each million. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fundamentals in Elementary Education The subject matter of this book is a direct outgrowth of the experiences of the Department of Education in the State Normal School at Warrensburg, Missouri, in giving courses in Education to beginners in that subject. During the ten years of the experiment, the major portion of the material has been tried out in more than one hundred fifty classes, taught by well-trained teachers. The book is de signed primarily for students in Teacher-training Classes in Education in high schools, and in Elementary Courses in normal schools; and it is well adapted to Teachers' Reading Circles. It might well be used as an Introductory Course in Education in colleges or in College Courses in normal schools. The author has tried to keep in the foreground the function of the elementary school as the greatest single agency in a democracy for the education of its children, and, while no effort has been made to exhaust the topics concerning elementary schools, an attempt has been made to discuss the fundamental ones with considerable detail and thoroughness. Practically all of the Problems presented at the end of each chapter may be answered from the subject matter contained in the text, and the experiences of the teacher and students. The selected readings are intended chiefly for supplementary purposes, and for those students who have access to a good library. It is needless to state that the writer claims no large degree of originality for the volume, because he has drawn freely upon pedagogical literature as it relates to the elementary school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of the Elementary School It is clearly impossible for an essayist to make form al acknowledgment of all the sources of his inspira tion. The student of education keeps his mind open to the influence of every honest word whether spoken by the thinkers of old or by the seers of to-day, and he keeps his heart open to the influence of the living child, to whom all educational systems owe their ex istence. And who shall say which speaks the more effectively, Plato and Emerson and Mark Hopkins, or the tow-headed boy in the fourth seat in the third row and the patient teacher who is leading him, helpfully and hopefully, according to her lights? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of Child Nature: For Teachers and Parents This little book, like Jean Mitchell's School by the same author, seeks to aid in the introduction of the spirit and method of the New Education into our Common Schools Without any radical change in their organization. It has been said that modern education seeks to educate the children while the aim heretofore has been to teach them the elementary branches. Its purpose should be to do both of these things. This has always been the purpose of every good school. In recent years the meaning of school education has been enlarged. This larger meaning is to be realized by centering the at tention more upon the child than formerly. This little volume suggests a method of study ing children while teaching them, which will prove helpful to any teacher who feels the need of help. These glimpses of child nature are true to life and suggest methods of solution of the most difficult problems that arise in school man agement. The book will prove especially help ful to primary and intermediate teachers as well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elementary School Curriculum This book is offered as a practical help to teachers, supervisors, principals, and superintendents in the improvement of the elementary school curriculum. The extended discussion of questions concerning the elimination of undesirable material and the introduction of much desirable new material has created a genuine need for a thoroughgoing, constructive revision of the curriculum. Such a revision requires the development of fundamental principles of selection, related vitally on the one hand to the aims and activities of life, and on the other to the nature and needs of children. The first eight chapters of this book are devoted to the development of such principles. The second part of the book makes application of these principles in offering a suggestive curriculum which may be adapted to the needs of elementary schools, wherever they may be. While the content of the curriculum is the chief concern of this discussion, there are necessarily some references to method. Method is inherently related to the purpose and content of all experiences. To that degree in which purpose and content vitally affect method and are in turn affected by it, method is considered. Because of its importance and the relative recency of its formal development, the project method receives more than passing attention. Experience in supervising several thousand teachers in three different states has been the basis for conclusions as to what topics teachers need most to know about and to have illustrated. Educational theory developed in leading American universities has been made use of. Originality is claimed only for the selection of topics and for the illustrations. It is not the question whether the teacher understands the rationale of the processes that concerns the child, but the validity or the falsity of the method employed. Teaching, or the process whereby one mind causes knowledge to arise in another, is an art; the teacher, during the performance of his task, is an artisan; and as such he should know how to use his tools, namely, his methods.
