The author has tried to make it merely an introduction to the study of English, particularly suitable for the early years of high school. As the book, however, covers the entire field of English composition, even though it be in an elementary form, it may serve as the only text-book in advanced classes that are doing intensive work; or in night-schools, where mature students are anxious to cover the ground as rapidly as possible. It is divided into thirty chapters, a chapter for each school week; and each chapter is subdivided into five lessons for the first twenty, and four for the last ten chapters, a lesson for each meeting of the class. The lessons are, as a general thing, so short that, in connection with each one, the students could be expected to do some outside reading.
