This brief history, is an edited version of one first published in 1847 as the 'Historical Record of the 18th or The Royal Irish Regiment of Foot published in 1847'. Written by a British Army Officer it captures a turbulent period in world history where the Regiment was dispatched to deal with rebellion in Ireland, war with France and the American war of independence whilst also capturing lesser known periods. The Regiment is one of the most famous Irish Regiments in the British army still in place today alongside the Irish Guards, unlike the disbanded Connaught Rangers, Royal Munster Fusiliers and Royal Dublin Fusiliers.A window on a past that has vanished and before the Regiment faced the horrors of world war one, Irish independence and a violent 20th century.

This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the period covered by this history, the Royal Irish Regiment fought in Europe, in Asia, in Africa, in America and in Australasia. Formed in 1684 as the Earl of Granard's Regiment of Foot it served with credit in William III's war in Ireland and subsequently fought with great distinction at Namur, in 1695; this was its first Battle Honour. The Regiment then formed part of the British contingent in the army commanded by Marlborough in the Low Countries and Germany in the War of the Spanish Succession - Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet. In 1727 a detachment was present at the defence of Gibraltar against the Spanish trying to recapture it; in the American War of Independence they were in action at Lexington and Bunker's Hill. Other scenes of action included Toulon, Corsica and the battle of Alexandria in the early stages of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1805 the Regiment (now consisting of two battalions) was sent to the West Indies where it remained for the next twelve years during which time losses from sickness amounted to 52 officers and 1,777 NCOs and men. In 1840 it was part of the expedition to China, followed by active service in the second Burma war, the Crimea, the Indian Mutiny, the Maori war, the second Afghan war, Tel-el-Kebir and the Nile expedition, campaigns on the North West Frontier and finally the Boer War. The appendices are real gems: the first is a calendar of the Regiment's moves from 1685 to 1902 including location of peacetime stations during that time; each battalion is shown separately. Then follows the casualty roll giving names of officers killed, died of wounds or disease and wounded in every campaign or battle from 1690, the siege of Limerick, to the end of the Boer War. Other rank casualties are at first given as figures but from the American War of Independence on they, too, are named. Another appendix gives the names of all 52 officers who died in the West Indies and this is followed by the list of awards for gallantry (three VCs) and the recipients of the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (LSGCM). There is a list showing succession of colonels from 1684 to 1897 with biographies, including that of the Colonel-in-Chief (Viscount Wolseley). And finally there is a descriptive list of Memorials of the Regiment, noting to whom they are dedicated with any inscriptions and names. The book ends with a good, twenty-page index.

Also known as the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot and the 18th (The Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot, it was one of eight Irish regiments raised largely in Ireland, its home depot in Clonmel. It saw service for two and a half centuries before being disbanded with the Partition of Ireland following establishment of the independent Irish Free State in 1922 when the five regiments that had their traditional recruiting grounds in the counties of the new state were disbanded. The regiment was formed in 1684 by the Earl of Granard from independent companies in Ireland. In 1695, the regiment became known as the Royal Regiment of Ireland due to its performance at the Siege of Namur in 1695 under the direction of King William III. The regiment was in Ireland during the majority of the Seven Years' War and was ordered to America on 1 January 1767. The regiment arrived at Philadelphia on 11 July 1767 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Wilkins. -Wikipedia The regiment also participated in the following wars: American Revolutionary War, French Revolutionary Wars, Napoleonic Wars, First Opium War in China, Second Anglo-Afghan War, and New Zealand Wars, etc.

Book excerpt: The Royal Irish Regiment was an infantry regiment of the line in the British Army, first raised in 1684. Also known as the 18th Regiment of Foot, it was one of eight Irish regiments raised primarily in Ireland, its Home Depot in Clonmel. It remained in service for two and a half centuries before being disbanded with the Partition of Ireland following the independent Irish Free State establishment in 1922, when the traditional recruiting grounds of the five regiments in the counties of the new state were disbanded. This historical work presents an engaging account of the services of the Royal Irish Regiment of the British Army. This well-structured record contains several particulars about the war, such as the period and circumstances of the original formation of the regiment, the names of the officers killed or wounded by the enemy, the battles, sieges, and other military operations.
