Download or read book Yankee Destinies written by Peter R. Knights and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs important milestones in the lives of 2,808 white, native-born men who resided in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1860 or 1870. Selected systematically from the census for those two years, these men represent two cross-sections of those viewed by contemporaries as "typical" Bostonians. Using a broad array of sources--manuscript census returns; tax assessments; city directories; birth, marriage, and death records for more than twenty states; cemetery records; newspapers; and family genealogies--Peter Knights traced these men not only back to their origins in hundreds of small New England towns but also (for those who left) onward from Boston. He determined changes in their occupations and wealth and after they arrived in Boston, the fates of their marriages, their production of children, and--in all but seventy cases--their deaths and the causes thereof. The result is a comprehensive quantitative study of important aspects of the lives of what are probably the largest sample population groups for any North American community.

Book excerpt: This is a biographical study which surveys the life and career of Boston Baptist Adoniram Judson Gordon (1836-1895) and examines pre-millennialism as his motivation and source of his theological understanding. The study examines a moderate Calvinistic Baptist, tracing his theological development and analyzing his embrace of pre-millennialism and its substantial impact on his pastorate, denominational work, relationships, and enterprises. Gordon's significant role in the shaping of late nineteenth-century North American Evangelical Protestant Christianity is demonstrated in this biography.

Book Synopsis Faith in the Great Physician by : Heather D. Curtis
Download or read book Faith in the Great Physician written by Heather D. Curtis and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize of the American Society of Church History for 2007 Faith in the Great Physician tells the story of how participants in the evangelical divine healing movement of the late nineteenth century transformed the ways Americans coped with physical affliction and pursued bodily health. Examining the politics of sickness, health, and healing during this period, Heather D. Curtis encourages critical reflection on the theological, cultural, and social forces that come into play when one questions the purpose of suffering and the possibility of healing. Curtis finds that advocates of divine healing worked to revise a deep-seated Christian ethic that linked physical suffering with spiritual holiness. By engaging in devotional disciplines and participating in social reform efforts, proponents of faith cure embraced a model of spiritual experience that endorsed active service, rather than passive endurance, as the proper Christian response to illness and pain. Emphasizing the centrality of religious practices to the enterprise of divine healing, Curtis sheds light on the relationship among Christian faith, medical science, and the changing meanings of suffering and healing in American culture.
