Book excerpt: This stimulating collection of essays by distinguished British, American, Australian and German scholars, originally published in 1985, offers a picture of the upsurge of New Unionism and the growth of old unions, and looks at the severe setbacks which occurred in the labour movements of Britain and Germany between the 1880s and the First World War. Labour history is seen from a European perspective and special emphasis is placed on the role of the state in Britain and Germany in its desire to contain and suppress trade union activity by law or force. Insights are provided into the political allegiances of the unions and their members to the parties of the working class and the state.

Download or read book Trade Unionism Since 1945 written by Craig Phelan and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview This book offers the detailed historical background required for a holistic appreciation of current problems faced and the possibilities for revitalisation. In two volumes it provides introductory overviews of trade union development since the end of World War II in 26 countries from every corner of the globe. Each chapter explains the main contours of trade union growth and development in one country from the pivotal year 1945 to the present. Each chapter assesses the often dynamic expansion of trade unionism in the 1950s and 1960s; the role of trade unionism in the movements for national liberation in the Global South and the erection of social welfare systems in the developed North; the economic shocks that resulted in membership decline and loss of political influence from the late 1970s onward; the economic restructuring and growing labour market diversity of the 1980s and 1990s that undercut the traditional bases of trade union membership; and the historical roots of the contemporary political and economic context in which revitalisation efforts are taking place.

Book Synopsis The Politics of the West German Trade Unions by : Andrei S. Markovits
Download or read book The Politics of the West German Trade Unions written by Andrei S. Markovits and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the politics of the West German trade unions in the context of their larger role as major actors in the polity of a democratic Federal Republic of Germany. By focusing on the historical realities of the labour movement, the study concentrates on explaining to what extent organised labour helped solidify, yet at the same time challenged the dominant structures of politics and authority in German history's most extensive and longest-lasting democracy. Professor Markovits explains the immediate financial, legal and political framework wherein the unions operate and differentiates the various political trends that have consistently determined inter-union co-operation, as well as rivalry. An analysis of four major unions, including the vast metal workers' grouping, shows how the industrial reality of each helps to shape its political outlook and strategic thinking. Contingent factors such as personal leadership are analysed in addition to objective industrial and historical criteria. This major study concludes by cautiously gauging the future of the West German trade unions in an increasingly complex and uncertain world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `As one would expect, this is a well-crafted, literate and absorbing account of European trade union development. Established scholars and advanced students will enjoy the discussion of theory and cases′ - The Journal of Industrial Relations `[A] detailed and fascinating history of trade unions in the three countries [Britain, Germany, Italy]... considers how the unions could recover from the intense disarray of recent years′ - Labour Research `Everyone concerned over the construction of a truly social Europe will learn much from this thoughtful and probing study′ - Professor Colin Crouch, Istituto Universitario Europeo In this comprehensive overview of trade unionism in Europe and beyond, Richard Hyman offers a fresh perspective on trade union identity, ideology and strategy. He shows how the varied forms and impact of different national movements reflect historical choices on whether to emphasize a role as market bargainers, mobilizers of class opposition or partners in social integration. The book demonstrates how these inherited traditions can serve as both resources and constraints in responding to the challenges which confront trade unions in today′s working world.

This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Document from the year 2010 in the subject Law - Civil / Private / Trade / Anti Trust Law / Business Law, grade: 1,0, T.C. Yeditepe University Istanbul, language: English, abstract: The modern German civil law is based on the idea of freedom of contract (Rüthers, 2003, p. 26). This implies the freedom of individuals to negotiate contracts without any interference of the government. This concept can only lead to fair and reasonable results if two equal parts are negotiating (Rüthers, 2003, p. 28). If one party has more or better alternatives than the other, the result is more likely to be unfair and inequitable (Blum, 2007, p. 9). Art. 9 (3) GG deals with the Vereinigungs- und Koalitionsfreiheit, the freedom to found and join societies and associations. This matter is closely linked to the legal questions arising from collective agreements and strikes (Freckmann, 1999, p. 96). After presenting the wording of Art. 9 (3) GG, followed by a short overview concerning the history of Art. 9 (3) GG, these questions will be elaborated in more detail in this midterm paper.
