Book Synopsis Schaefferstown and Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County by : Diane Wenger and Jan Taylor
Download or read book Schaefferstown and Heidelberg Township, Lebanon County written by Diane Wenger and Jan Taylor and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural and charming, Schafferstown and surrounding Heidelberg Township in Lebanon County have preserved many of their earliest historic qualities. German immigrant Alexander Schaeffer laid out the village with a central square and built a water system around 1758 using underground wooden pipes to connect a spring-fed reservoir to two troughs on Market Street and the town square. It is one of the oldest public waterworks in the United States. Because the area was left isolated from rail lines, canals, and modern highways, the town did not grow appreciably in the 19th or 20th centuries. This greatly influenced the small-town look and feel that the area maintains today. Schafferstown retains many early log, stone, and even a few half-timbered houses as well as the original town layout. Today, it is the largest village in Heidelberg Township, which also includes Kleinfeltersville, Reistville, and Buffalo Springs.

Book Synopsis Historical Archaeology of the Delaware Valley, 1600-1850 by : Richard Veit
Download or read book Historical Archaeology of the Delaware Valley, 1600-1850 written by Richard Veit and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Delaware Valley is a distinct region situated within the Middle Atlantic states, encompassing portions of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. With its cultural epicenter of Philadelphia, its surrounding bays and ports within Maryland and Delaware, and its conglomerate population of European settlers, Native Americans, and enslaved Africans, the Delaware Valley was one of the great cultural hearths of early America. The region felt the full brunt of the American Revolution, briefly served as the national capital in the post-Revolutionary period, and sheltered burgeoning industries amidst the growing pains of a young nation. Yet, despite these distinctions, the Delaware Valley has received less scholarly treatment than its colonial equals in New England and the Chesapeake region. In Historical Archaeology of the Delaware Valley, 1600–1850, Richard Veit and David Orr bring together fifteen essays that represent the wide range of cultures, experiences, and industries that make this region distinctly American in its diversity. From historic-period American Indians living in a rapidly changing world to an archaeological portrait of Benjamin Franklin, from an eighteenth-century shipwreck to the archaeology of Quakerism, this volume highlights the vast array of research being conducted throughout the region. Many of these sites discussed are the locations of ongoing excavations, and archaeologists and historians alike continue to debate the region’s multifaceted identity. The archaeological stories found within Historical Archeology of the Delaware Valley, 1600–1850 reflect the amalgamated heritage that many American regions experienced, though the Delaware Valley certainly exemplifies a richer experience than most: it even boasts the palatial home of a king (Joseph Bonaparte, elder brother of Napoleon and former King of Naples and Spain). This work, thoroughly based on careful archaeological examination, tells the stories of earlier generations in the Delaware Valley and makes the case that New England and the Chesapeake are not the only cultural centers of colonial America.

Book Synopsis Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans, 1720-1920 by : Sally McMurry
Download or read book Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans, 1720-1920 written by Sally McMurry and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-03-08 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phrase "Pennsylvania German architecture" likely conjures images of either the "continental" three-room house with its huge hearth and five-plate stoves, or the huge Pennsylvania bank barn with its projecting overshoot. These and other trademarks of Pennsylvania German architecture have prompted great interest among a wide audience, from tourists and genealogists to architectural historians, antiquarians, and folklorists. Since the nineteenth century, scholars have engaged in field measurement and drawing, photographic documentation, and careful observation, resulting in a scholarly conversation about Pennsylvania German building traditions. What cultural patterns were being expressed in these buildings? How did shifting social, technological, and economic forces shape architectural changes? Since those early forays, our understanding has moved well beyond the three-room house and the forebay barn. In Architecture and Landscape of the Pennsylvania Germans, 1720-1920, eight essays by leading scholars and preservation professionals not only describe important architectural sites but also offer original interpretive insights that will help advance understanding of Pennsylvania German culture and history. Pennsylvania Germans' lives are traced through their houses, barns, outbuildings, commercial buildings, churches, and landscapes. The essays bring to bear years of field observation as well as engagement with current scholarly perspectives on issues such as the nature of "ethnicity," the social construction of landscape, and recent historiography about the Pennsylvania Germans. Dozens of original measured drawings, appearing here for the first time in print, document important works of Pennsylvania German architecture, including the iconic Bertolet barns in Berks County, the Martin Brandt farm complex in Cumberland County, a nineteenth-century Pennsylvania German housemill, and urban houses in Lancaster.
Book Synopsis Myerstown and Eastern Lebanon County by : Donald R. Brown
Download or read book Myerstown and Eastern Lebanon County written by Donald R. Brown and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Myerstown and the other Eastern Lebanon County towns are located in one of America's most fertile valleys. Rich limestone bedrock underlies much of the Lebanon Valley, which is anchored by Reading to the east and Harrisburg to the west. Myerstown, a borough since 1912, was laid out 144 years earlier by Isaac Meier on his plantation along the Tulpehocken Creek. Jackson Township surrounds Myerstown and is growing rapidly with small businesses, retirement communities, and Amish- and Mennonite-owned farms. Richland, a borough since 1906, was founded in the 1850s when a railroad was built through the valley. Heidelberg Township, the oldest of the municipalities, contains the 18th-century farm and village of Historic Schaefferstown. Millcreek Township includes the communities of Newmanstown and Millbach, where a quaint Pennsylvania German village is located.
