Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Highland Minstrelsy It is hoped that the brief introductions severally prefixed to the following poems will be found more convenient to the reader than the scattered footnotes which would otherwise have been necessary. They have no pretension to erudition, and, unless where they are the result of personal observation, have been drawn from such authorities as are most readily accessible, and as bear most directly upon the traditions, the sentiments, and the customs of a romantic people. The writer takes this opportunity to thank her Scottish friends for the local information so obligingly communicated, which has proved of material service. The same, or a similar Opinion, appears to have commended itself to other distinguished writers and scholars, as the following quotations indicate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lay the Last Minstrel: A Poem The Poem, now oll'ered to the Public, is intended toillustrate the customs and manners, which anciently prevailed on the Borders of England and Scotland. The inhabitants, living in a state partly pastoral and partly warlike, and combining habits of constant de predation with the influence of a rude spirit of chi valry, were often engaged in scenes, highly suscepti ble of poetical ornament. As the description of scenery and manners was more the object of the author, than a combined and regular narrative, the plan of the ancient Metrical Romance was adopted, which allows greater latitude, in this respect, than would be con sistent with the dignity of a regular Poem. The same model otl'ered other facilities, as it permits an occasional alteration of measure, which, in some de gree, authorizes the change of rhythm in the text. The machinery also, adopted from popular belief, would have seemed puerile in a poem, which did not partake of the rudeness of the old Ballad, or Metri cal Romance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Minstrelsy, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1 of 2: With an Historical Introduction and Notes Language, which in the written literature Of a country is ever varying, sufi'ers no material changes nor corruptions among the lower and uneducated classes of society by whom it is spoken as their mother tongue. With them, primitive forms of speech, peculiar idiomatick expressions, and antique phrases are still in use which we would look for in vain in the literature of the present day, or in its word-books, which are not professedly dedicated to the Restitution of Decayed Intelligence. It is not, there fore, with the unlettered and the rude that oral song sufi'ers vital and irremediable wrong. What they have received from their forefathers, they transmit in the same shape to their children for, as the Pardoners in the Canterbury Tales has justly remarked. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest Minstrel The productions of Mrs. Peirson are just beginning to attract general notice among the lovers of poetry. It is true, that her occasional effusions in the literary and other journals, for a number of years past, had drawn forth expressions of very high approbation, from persons whose opinions were entitled to unqualified respect. But when it is recollected, that the mass of newspaper poetry is justly regarded as mere trash - rhyme without sentiment, and sickly sentimentality without substance or sense - it is easy to conceive, that a writer of a higher tone and order is placed in disadvantageous circumstances, when forced to breathe in such an unnatural atmosphere, and in such company. Mrs. Peirson, moreover, has been secluded for many years from all direct intercourse with the world of letters and the arts, and had no personal friends at her side, to call the attention of the public mind in the outset to her Mountain-Lay. Hers was a "voice in the wilderness;" and although an occasional listener adjudged that voice to utter "Thoughts that breathe and words that burn," yet there were few who knew even her name and residence, and fewer still her intellectual and moral excellence and worth. Besides all this, she had, for a series of years, been severely disciplined in the school of affliction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
