Book excerpt: Internationally respected scholar Richard Bauckham offers a brief, engaging study of divine revelation in Scripture. He probes the deep meaning of well-known moments in the biblical story in order to address the key question the Bible is designed to answer: Who is God? Accessible for laypeople and important to scholars, this volume begins by exploring three key events in the Bible in which God is revealed: Jacob's dream at Bethel (the revelation of the divine presence), Moses at the burning bush (the revelation of the divine Name), and Moses on Mount Sinai (the revelation of the divine character). In each case, Bauckham traces these themes through the rest of Scripture. He then shows how the New Testament builds on the Old by exploring three revelatory events in Mark's Gospel, events that reveal the Trinity: Jesus's baptism, transfiguration, and crucifixion. This book is based on the Frumentius Lectures for 2015 at the Ethiopian Graduate School of Theology in Addis Ababa and on the Hayward Lectures for 2018 at Acadia Divinity College, Nova Scotia.

Book excerpt: The very foundation of Christianity is the fact that Jesus Christ is the "only begotten Son of God" (John 3:16). But, what assurance exists that He is deity, except that the Holy Scriptures are proven to be the infallible message from God? Since the Bible was written by human beings for human beings, man's very hope rests upon the question, "Could the Scriptures be the very Word of God, though penned by men?" Brother Mosher will affirm the answer to be "yes!" --Curtis Cates

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Word is a fiery, exploding, all-pervading, and living message that should cause us all to fall down to the ground and tremble… yet that is rarely the experience for so many dispirited people of God! Some people believe questioning the Bible, the direction God is going, or even God himself, is blasphemy. Some think it's a sign of disbelief. Daniel Thornton believes his son, Rusty Thornton, is lost without God and takes him to a faraway place in the early 1950s near Spicewood, Texas where he would never come in contact with people. He has an old King James Version of the Bible and begins to try and cure his son's affliction of skepticism. Rusty Thornton remembered nothing before his eighteenth birthday. The first book he read after learning to read and write was on Hinduism. His father didn't know how such a book ended up in his library. He took it and hid it from his son but not until he had read it from cover to cover. Was it too late for his son? Did what he learned about Vishnu and Krishna absorb his entire thought process where he never recognized Jesus Christ as the one and only son of God? Who's right, Daniel Thornton or his son? Rusty questioned his ability to communicate with animals. Was it a God-given talent? Why can't he remember anything in his life before his eighteenth birthday? Who is his cousin, Carolyn Thornton who comes strangely into his life on his twenty-first birthday? Who is the stranger, Billy Joe Briscoe, who is hired to become Rusty's companion and teach him about Jesus Christ and the Bible? "Is it wrong for Christians to Question God?" One should not ask a question of the Lord because they think they know better than Him. One should never question God's authority, a big No, No! We should never ask questions of God to try and stall our obedience to the Lord. If we are questioning the scriptures in the Bible because we desperately want to know the answer we are searching for, then that should be okay. In the mind and thoughts of Rusty Thornton, it is perfectly fine to do so! Snippets from Seeing the Power of God: "My father taught me that God is merciful and caring for all human beings. Yet what I read in the Bible here," he turns a few more pages, "can hardly be so if this is true." He stopped turning the pages at the Book of Joshua and began reading aloud, "Jericho is shut up. God instructed Joshua how to besiege it!" He paused a moment, torn by conflicting emotions. "Does that make any sense to you, Billy Joe? It causes me to have grave concern over God's plans. If he is for sure the Creator of all things, how could he possibly instruct one of his own human beings, his own creation, to besiege a city that's filled with others of his creation and kill men, women, children, and animals… all his creations?" *** "Let me ask it this way of you, Billy Joe. If God has the power to take out Satan and love us, why doesn't he do it? Why did the Lord have to come down and die on the cross to save us from the grasp of Satan who was a creation and subject of God in the first place? Why does Satan still exist if he has disobeyed God more than anyone else?" *** Rusty Thornton wanted to know what someone who died saw in the afterlife. "Many say," Billy Joe jumps in and mixes up the conversation, "that when you die, you will meet a skeleton holding a scythe. Some say you go to Heaven. Some say you go to Hell. Others say you are reincarnated or that you turn into a ghost. Some even say that you sleep for all eternity. The problem with death, my dear friend, is that we will never know until after we die."

Book excerpt: New York Times bestselling author and acclaimed religion scholar, Stephen Prothero, captures the compelling and unique saga of twentieth-century America on an identity quest through the eyes and books of one of the most influential editors of the day—a search, born of two world wars, for resolution of our divided identity as a Christian nation and a nation of religions. One summer evening in 1916 in Blanchester, Ohio, a sixteen-year-old farm boy was riding his horse past the town cemetery. The horse reared back and whinnied, and Eugene Exman saw God. For the rest of his life, he struggled to recreate that moment. Through a treasure of personal letters and papers, God, the Bestseller explores Exman’s personal quest. A journey that would lead him in the late 1920s to the Harper religious books department, which he turned during the Great Depression into a money-making juggernaut and the country’s top religion publisher. Exman’s role in the shaping of American religion is undeniable. Here was a man who was ahead of his time and leading the rest of the nation through books on a spiritual exploration. Exman published bestsellers by the controversial preacher Harry Emerson Fosdick, the Catholic radical Dorothy Day, the Civil Rights pioneer Howard Thurman, and two Nobel laureates: Albert Schweitzer and Martin Luther King Jr. Exman did not just sit at a desk and read. In addition to his lifelong relationships with the most influential leaders of the day, Exman was on a spiritual journey of his own traversing the world in search of God. He founded a club of mystics, dropped acid in 1958, four years before Timothy Leary. And six years before The Beatles went to India, he found a guru there in 1962. In the end, this is the story of the popularization of the religion of experience—a cultural story of modern America on a quest of its own. Exman helped to reimagine and remake American religion, turning the United States into a place where denominational boundaries are blurred, diversity is valued, and the only creed is that individual spiritual experience is the essence of religion.

Book excerpt: Why does God exist? How have the three dominant monotheistic religions—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—shaped and altered the conception of God? How have these religions influenced each other? In this stunningly intelligent book, Karen Armstrong, one of Britain's foremost commentators on religious affairs, traces the history of how men and women have perceived and experienced God, from the time of Abraham to the present. The epic story begins with the Jews' gradual transformation of pagan idol worship in Babylon into true monotheism—a concept previously unknown in the world. Christianity and Islam both rose on the foundation of this revolutionary idea, but these religions refashioned 'the One God' to suit the social and political needs of their followers. From classical philosophy and medieval mysticism to the Reformation, Karen Armstrong performs the near miracle of distilling the intellectual history of monotheism into one superbly readable volume, destined to take its place as a classic. Praise for History of God “An admirable and impressive work of synthesis that will give insight and satisfaction to thousands of lay readers.”—The Washington Post Book World “A brilliantly lucid, spendidly readable book. [Karen] Armstrong has a dazzling ability: she can take a long and complex subject and reduce it to the fundamentals, without oversimplifying.”—The Sunday Times (London) “Absorbing . . . A lode of learning.”—Time “The most fascinating and learned study of the biggest wild goose chase in history—the quest for God. Karen Armstrong is a genius.”—A.N. Wilson, author of Jesus: A Life

Book excerpt: This eBook edition of "The Pursuit of God" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. The Pursuit of God is an inspirational guide for Christians seeking to get closer to God, written by an American Christian pastor A. W. Tozer. In one of his most famous books Tozer identifies one of the major problems of the Christian Church. He suggests that the Church is making a new type of Christian who understands the Christian doctrine better than ever throughout the history, but still fails to understand what it really means to be a follower of Christ. Having identified the problem, Tozer offers a beautiful solution that is more practical and mystical than theological. He encourages the Christian to take the seeking of God and make it the foundation upon which their life is built on. Being a mystic, he focuses on experience, feeling and hearing God's voice as important to faith.

Book excerpt: Who is God? Good question! Does He play a part in your life? Is He real? We find hard questions to put up as a barricade between God and us and believe God doesn't care and that we are responsible for our own fate; this author uses the Bible to demonstrate how God is working in your life. I had searched for a book to share with friends that covered all this information in an easy to read and an easy to assimilate manner but could not find one and it is not my intention to preach or hypothesize but to share the facts as the Bible gives them on God.I would like to encourage readers to trust God with their lives and open their hearts to God's wonderful possibilities for them. The author has been a Christian since a toddler in Sunday School who went through every stage of growing and maturing in faith. In association with wonderful Bible teachers over the years, the revelation on the greatness of God became real. Sharing this good news in book form was directed by the Holy Spirit and it is only through requiring His help could this book have been written. The Lord moved me to write this book for people who do not understand God and are looking for answers and for those who have even been church goers but still have no knowledge as to the greatness and power of God. There are many who will pick up a book with this title and find the hope they have been looking for. In this book I have shown "Who is God?" in all His greatness, glory and majesty, with the "What's He done for me Lately?" giving encouragement, hope and an invitation to join God's family

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE PULITZER PRIZE What sort of "person" is God? What is his "life story"? Is it possible to approach him not as an object of religious reverence, but as the protagonist of the world's greatest book—as a character who possesses all the depths, contradictions, and abiguities of a Hamlet? This is the task that Jack Miles—a former Jesuit trained in religious studies and Near Eastern languages—accomplishes with such brilliance and originality in God: A Biography. Using the Hebrew Bible as his text, Miles shows us a God who evolves through his relationship with man, the image who in time becomes his rival. Here is the Creator who nearly destroys his chief creation; the bloodthirsty warrior and the protector of the downtrodden; the lawless law-giver; the scourge and the penitent. Profoundly learned, stylishly written, the resulting work illuminates God and man alike and returns us to the Bible with a sense of discovery and wonder.

Book excerpt: This is a book about God. Not just any god, but the god that created Adam and Eve; the god of Abraham, the god of the Jews; the god of the Christians; and the god of Islam---without a doubt, the most influential figure in the history of human civilization. But what do we really know about him? Who is he? Where did he come from? What does he look like? What sort of character does he have? What, if anything, does he eat? Does he have a family? In what ways can he be said to even exist at all? Alexander Waugh has been asking questions like these for as long as he can remember. Now, having drawn from an enormous range of sources, from the sacred books of the Torah, the Christian New Testament, and the Islamic Qur'an, from the Greek Apocrypha and the ancient texts of Nag Hammadi to the Dead Sea Scrolls, he has sought out the answers. Using material gleaned from the diverse writings of saints, rabbis, historians, prophets, atheists, poets, and mystics, he has molded his findings into a singular, striking biographical portrait of God. Erudite, perceptive, and entertaining, God reveals many startling and unexpected characteristics of the divine being. From the simple stories of Genesis and Job, explored from God's own viewpoint, to the prophecies of Muhammad and Sybil and the intricate philosophies of Newton and Nietzsche, Alexander Waugh has left no stone unturned in his compulsive mission to create a fascinating and complex portrait of God, as humans have claimed to understand him.
