Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Birdlover's Year The following papers, written from time to time as health permitted, embody the observations and studies of one to whom the "life and conversation" of birds afford ever fresh interests. Many of the papers have already appeared in Chambers's Journal, the Windsor Magazine, Scottish Country Life or the Scotsman, and the author desires to thank the editors of these periodicals for permitting her to reprint them. She desires also to acknowledge most gratefully the Rev. H. N. Bonar's permission to illustrate her book with some of his admirable photographs of bird life. To Mr. Eagle Clarke, of the Royal Scottish Museum, her thanks are due for much valuable help, and to Mr. Henry Johnston for going over the proof-sheets for her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird Friends: A Complete Bird Book for Americans These pages are written, not only for the bird-lover, but also for the general reader who has no special interest in birds, but who is interested in those matters that pertain to community welfare. Most of the topics presented in this book have been treated in an entertaining way in many excellent bird books, but most of these books cover only one or two phases of bird life, so that a person desiring to be generally informed on birds must secure several books. The bird enthusiast is glad to do this, but not the average citizen, who has no more interest in birds than in many other topics. It is highly desirable that every citizen should be informed on the need of conserving bird life as one of our valuable national resources. It has been the purpose of the author to gather within one set of covers a brief discussion of the essential facts concerning bird life that are of general interest, which are now scattered through many books, bulletins, and magazines. One of the most interesting developments of the past few years has been the rapid strides made in the cause of bird-protection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bird World: A Bird Book for Children It may be of interest to some of our readers to know under what guidance they are to make this little journey into the borders of Bird World. First, then, the plan and direction come from the author of some books they have known as the Stickney Readers. It may be thought worth while to venture on this new pleasure trip under the same leadership. Second, a gentleman has been found to act as special conductor, - one who has lived closer to Bird World than any of us. For years he has known by sight and sound all our New England birds, and many, if not most, of our chance summer and winter visitors, beside having particularly intimate acquaintance with some which we too shall be glad to meet. A number of the stories which follow are based upon his own personal observations. You will find his name upon the title page. He is a director in the Audubon Society for the Protection of Birds, which makes it certain that the citizens of Bird World are as safe in his hands as are we. You have thus the combined powers of two who are both friends of young people and of birds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Long Island The great expense attending works embellished with costly engravings, as well as the strictly scientific character of most works treating of Natural History, limits such subjects comparatively to the few. Frequent complaints of this nature have induced me to offer the present volume, with a view of placing within the reach of the "gunners," the means of becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the birds frequenting Long Island. The additions all departments of Natural History are continually receiving, is evidence, that with however much zeal and energy the different branches have been pursued, and notwithstanding the praiseworthy exertions bestowed by those who have distinguished themselves in their various pursuits, still we find their labors are not so far complete as to leave nothing for their successors. While the Botanist, Mineralogist, Entomologist, and Conchologist are enriching their cabinets, the Ornithologist is finding in our vast territory undescribed species. The "Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia," (1841, ) contains an article giving the views of Dr. Bachman, relative to the course our Naturalists should pursue in the publication of American species viz. that all north of the Tropic of Cancer twenty-three and a half degrees, should be called North America - the Tropics, Tropical or Central America - and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, South America." The large scope which our Zoology embraces, deters many persons from making collections, as they despair ever being able to complete them.
