Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical Sketch of Eight Generations of Hoopers in America This genealogical sketch of one line of Hoopers in America has been prepared for the benefit of the children of Mrs. Sumner Crosby (Idolene Snow Hooper), now living in Alameda, Cal. No attempt has been made by the compiler of these records, (a grandmother of the children), to establish a distinguished name. Like most families in New England, this family of Hoopers is of good yeoman stock. Mr. J. N. Larned, the learned historian, in "Books, Culture, and Character," suggests the thought that human life is lived on a narrow strand, between two great oceans, - the Ocean of Time Past and the Ocean of Time to Come. When you turn, looking futureward, you see nothing with certainty: it is veiled by an impenetrable mist.
