Book excerpt: Although anecdotal reports of loss of once-acquired reading ability was noticed in the individuals who had sustained brain damage as early as the year AD. 30, systematic enquires of alexia were not undertaken until the latter part of the nineteenth century. The two anatomo-pathological studies carried out by Dejerine in 1891 and 1892 mark the beginning of scholarly investigation of reading failure. Interestingly, the study of de velopmental reading disability also began to receive attention at about the same time when Pringle Morgan described the case of a 14-year-old boy who had great difficulty in reading and writing. Since then sporadic reports of developmental reading-writing failure began to appear in medi cal and educational journals even though such investigation went on at an unhurried pace. In the past two decades, however, the situation has changed enormously and hundreds of articles that have investigated developmental and acquired cognitive disabilities have been published. Disorders of spoken language and written language are two areas that have been extensively addressed by these articles. Those who study disorders of language come from a wide variety of backgrounds and their reports are also published in a variety of journals. The purpose of the present volume is to bring some important research findings of written language disorders together and present them in a coherent format. In Chapter 1, Joshi and Aaron challenge the validity of the notion of the putative "poor speller but good reader'.

Primarily historical, the first two chapters trace conflicting answers to the question above, focusing on two constructive results of the debate: the re-invention of rhetoric and writing as a discipline, a coherent and growing body of knowledge; and, as a result, the emergence of independent departments of writing, free from departments of English, free, therefore, to develop their own curriculum and to manage their own budgets. Additionally, the second chapter examines two destructive consequences of this debate: the ban of literature from writing courses, where students might profitably study both; and, as a result, the often painful departmental splits, which not only separate former colleagues but also cramp the pedagogy of those trained to teach both writing and literature. Book excerpt: For security reasons, using parallel writing tasks within or across different test administrations is common practice in large-scale language testing. Lack of task comparability would result in unjustified variance in test performance and consequently jeopardize test validity and fairness. Thus, it is crucial for test developers to gather empirical evidence from different aspects to substantiate the fairness argument that scores are consistent and score-based decisions are impartial across parallel tasks. Despite many studies hitherto on writing task comparability, those addressing picture-prompt writing tasks in an integrated manner have remained quite underexplored. Therefore, this book investigates the comparability of five writing tasks with picture prompts randomly assigned across testing occasions in an in-house English proficiency test (EPT) of a comprehensive university from three perspectives—the scores, the texts, and the raters and test takers. Results show that task difficulty is not comparable either in terms of some lexical, syntactic and content features elicited or as judged by raters and test takers, which could be related with topic familiarity and conceptual clarity of the picture prompt. Yet, overall task comparability is achieved in not only final scores but also score distribution and classification accuracy. The findings support the fairness argument for EPT writing and provide theoretical, practical and methodological implications.
