Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of Physical Training This bibliography is presented to the teachers and students of physical training at the earnest request of the Physical Directors' Society of the Young Men's Christian Associations. A committee was appointed by the society at the World's Fair meeting in St. Louis in the summer of 1904. This committee consisted of J. H. Mccurdy, J. H. Scott, and George T. Hepbron. They were instructed to pub lish a physical training bibliography. J. H. Scott and George T. Hep bron were made responsible for the raising of the funds necessary for publication. The financial committee secured over one hundred ad vance orders for the book, and in addition subscriptions from the fol lowing gentlemen: M. B. Rideout, W. Y. Reithard, George T. Hep bron, W. H. Ball, W. G. Truex, George J. Fisher, M. D., C. R. H. Jackson, J. B. Modesitt, J. W. Waters, C. E. Beckett, Fred West, W. H. Flood, A. B. Wegener, E. A. Sovereign, Frank Killam, G. F. Poole, M. D., George L. Meylan, M. D. The preparation of the bibliography was referred to J. H. Mccurdy. The object of this work has been to present a subject index of the physical training literature which would be helpful to the physical director and other students of physical training. The inspiration for this work came from Mr. J. T. Bowne some sixteen years ago; the preparation of the material began in 1895. The first task was the ar rangement of a method of classification; this was prepared jointly by J. T. Bowne and J. H. Mccurdy. The third edition of the classifica tion appears in this book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exercise training provokes widespread transformations in the human body, requiring coordinated changes in muscle composition, blood flow, neuronal and hormonal signaling, and metabolism. These changes enhance physical performance, improve mental health, and delay the onset of aging and disease. Understanding the molecular basis of these changes is therefore important for optimizing athletic ability and for developing drugs that elicit therapeutic effects. Written and edited by experts in the field, this collection from Cold Spring Harbor Perspectives in Medicine examines the biological basis of exercise from the molecular to the systemic levels. Contributors discuss how transcriptional regulation, cytokine and hormonal signaling, glucose metabolism, epigenetic modifications, microRNA profiles, and mitochondrial and ribosomal functions are altered in response to exercise training, leading to improved skeletal muscle, hippocampal, and cardiovascular function. Cross talk among the pathways underlying tissue-specific and systemic responses to exercise is also considered. The authors also discuss how the understanding of such molecular mechanisms may lead to the development of drugs that mitigate aging and disease. This volume will therefore serve as a vital reference for all involved in the fields of sports science and medicine, as well as anyone seeking to understand the molecular mechanisms by which exercise promotes whole-body health.

For collection development specialists, it is an invaluable selection guide. Allen describes and evaluates over 1,000 information sources on the complete spectrum of sports: from basketball, football, and hockey to figure skating, table tennis, and weight training. Focusing on English-language works published between 1990 and the present, the guide thoroughly covers traditional reference sources, such as encyclopedias and bibliographies, along with instructional sources in print formats, online databases, and Web sites. To enable users in search of information on specific sports or fitness activities, chapters are organized thematically, according to broad- type aquatic sports, nautical sports, precision and accuracy, racket sports, ice and snow sports, ball sports, cycling, and so on, with subcategories for such individual sports as soccer, golf, and yoga. Within these categories, works are further organized by type: reference, instructional, and Web sites.
