Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Missouri The early inhabitants of Missouri were a peculiar people. First of all were the Indians. When they settled there, no one knows. Next came the French, then the Spaniards, and lastly the Americans. The last named were mostly from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Nearly all the American settlers in Missouri were the descendants of pioneers who had grown accustomed to the trying scenes of forest life. They were a rigidly honest people. No locks were on their doors, and they had no need of any. As they were dependent on each other for protection, what belonged to one was freely loaned to his neighbor. If a pioneer wanted to borrow his neighbor's ax, and did not find the man at home, he took the ax without asking, and returned it when done with it. The early Missourians were rude and uncultured, but unselfish and brave. Stories of them, and of the people who preceded and followed them, are both entertaining and instructive. They serve to explain many curious names, customs, and laws, which to a person unfamiliar with the people must remain a mystery. Book Synopsis Missouri Literature (Classic Reprint) by : Richard H. Jesse
Download or read book Missouri Literature (Classic Reprint) written by Richard H. Jesse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-17 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missouri Literature In the choice of selections we found it necessary to restrict ourselves, for the most part, to publications in book form. There is an abundance of literary material appear ing from time to time in newspapers and magazines, well written and of interest to Missourians, but, if we had at tempted to include all that was worthy from a literary point of view, this little book would have expanded into several volumes. It will be readily observed also that some of the selections were chosen on account of their historical interest and are not to be judged wholly from a literary standpoint. Several of these are taken from books now out of print and inaccessible to a majority of readers; to the present generation, therefore, they will be fresh and entertaining, and should prove, moreover, of great interest to all Missourians, young or old, who feel a justifiable pride in the early history of our State. Letters from the New Jersey and other kinspeople I have inserted. These letters were found among my grandfather's papers only a short while ago. These may prove interesting to the descendants of these generous and warm-hearted contributors. These let - ters bear tidings from the writers that here once lived kindred they admired and cherished and wrote to so encouragingly and kindly. Download or read book Missouri written by Lucien Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missouri: A Bone of Contention Although the F ranch were the first to explore the Mississippi, to map out its course, and to establish per manent settlements upon its banks, they were not its discoverers neither were they the first to float upon its waters. That honor, if the term can be applied to What was but a lucky incident in a mad search after gold, be longs to the Spaniards, and is usually ascribed to Her nando de_ Soto, though upon what are believed to be insufficient grounds. Without stopping, however, to discuss the point, it is sufficient to say that almost a cen tury and a half before the French explorers launched their frail canoes upon the stream, he stood upon its banks; and whilst it is not possible to make out, with any degree of accuracy, the itinerary of his journey, there is but little hazard in asserting that the spot from which he first gazed upon its turbid waters must have been at or near the place where the city of Memphis now stands. Whether in the course of his wanderings he reached the confines of what is now known as the State of Mis souri is a question that cannot be definitively settled.
