Book excerpt: In The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost, poet Michael T. Young writes with a "dangerous brilliance." Keening through histories, personal and collective, Young guides the reader to unimagined destinations. Rather than feeling lost, however, the reader arrives at termini of discovery, finding them to be inevitable, necessary, earned. Young enacts these journeys through cognitive leaps that defy reason and syntax, performed by his prodigious wizardry. And as the unknown becomes known, what is lost is regained, for these poems are redemptive. Each one is bathed in a luminosity of phrasing Wallace Stevens would have envied. Young writes, "[H]ear the voice in light / whose only utterance is melting snow." Unlike snow, these poems will not disappear as long as important poetry continues to matter. -- DEAN KOSTOS, AUTHOR OF RIVERING AND LAST SUPPER OF THE SENSES For years, I've savored Michael T. Young's poems for their potent distillations of experience, their attempts to pour into crisp and clear free verse vessels "something else the words can't describe." In The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost, I am taken, poem after poem, through the musings of a keen intelligence, with "movement / from character to character, from stop to stop, / in books, on trains, in memory." What's more, these poems, like the characters of the title piece, seem to "come / into life, without intention," a remarkable skill from a remarkable poet. -- GARY J. WHITEHEAD, AUTHOR OF A GLOSSARY OF CHICKENS AND MEASURING CUBITS WHILE THE THUNDER CLAPS In The Beautiful Moment of Being Lost, Michael T. Young leads his readers into loving the world in its beautiful day-to-dayness. He does this by showing the reader, in thoughtful and graceful language, how to look and listen. In "As Is," he begins with "Although, for a moment, / the man peeling an orange / appears to cup a mouse in his hand / its tail dangling in a coil." In "Nocturne," he surprisingly turns July into January, and that month into love: "I'm walking these rising, white mounds toward home / where you wait in the habitable light." Michael T. Young joyously shares his gift, and his poetry will be read and re-read. -- BERTHA ROGERS, AUTHOR OF HEART TURNED BACK

Book excerpt: Beginning in the 1960s the author, although quite successful in his profession as freelance artist and an amateur thespian, found himself experiencing deep emotional stress and bouts of anxiety resulting in a loneliness and a deep desire to further express his feelings. What better way to fill the void than with the words of a poem? Each poem in this book relates to a specific time, season of the year, place or romantic interlude. The poetry was written in chronological order, dated and recorded in a private diary as it happened and was experienced by the author and kept hidden since 1986. He now feels it is time to share his feelings with others who may be moved and comforted by his words. The mind and body have grown old, but the heart still beats. They are simple poems about simple things: flowers, birds, butterflies and fireflies, things that bloom, fly, flutter and jump, crawl, buzz and bite. But even though Morris found solace in poetry, love had ceased to exist. It took years to understand why it had ceased... maybe because it never existed at all... just used as a means to an end. No matter how much love, attention and affection he had offered her for a score of years, it was of no concern to her. Pieces of love and tenderness laid scattered in the garden hoping to be restored to life someday, somehow, by someone. And they were, twenty years later, by a beautiful lady--you--who shared "the Beautiful Moments" and convinced the author that life really is worth living... And the Creator saw fit that they should now live happily ever after. About the Author Chuck Morris was born in 1938 and raised in Bradford, Pennsylvania. After graduation and military service, he relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana, where he resided for thirty-six years and worked as a professional artist in the French Quarter. Later, he was employed for fifteen years in civil service. After retiring in 1995, he and his wife, Sue, moved to Nevada. Morris has four sons and eleven grandchildren.

Book excerpt: The astonishing, powerful debut by the winner of a 2016 Whiting Writers' Award WHEREAS her birth signaled the responsibility as mother to teach what it is to be Lakota therein the question: What did I know about being Lakota? Signaled panic, blood rush my embarrassment. What did I know of our language but pieces? Would I teach her to be pieces? Until a friend comforted, Don’t worry, you and your daughter will learn together. Today she stood sunlight on her shoulders lean and straight to share a song in Diné, her father’s language. To sing she motions simultaneously with her hands; I watch her be in multiple musics. —from “WHEREAS Statements” WHEREAS confronts the coercive language of the United States government in its responses, treaties, and apologies to Native American peoples and tribes, and reflects that language in its officiousness and duplicity back on its perpetrators. Through a virtuosic array of short lyrics, prose poems, longer narrative sequences, resolutions, and disclaimers, Layli Long Soldier has created a brilliantly innovative text to examine histories, landscapes, her own writing, and her predicament inside national affiliations. “I am,” she writes, “a citizen of the United States and an enrolled member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe, meaning I am a citizen of the Oglala Lakota Nation—and in this dual citizenship I must work, I must eat, I must art, I must mother, I must friend, I must listen, I must observe, constantly I must live.” This strident, plaintive book introduces a major new voice in contemporary literature.

Book excerpt: “[A] confident, mystical, expansive project.”—Publishers Weekly “[D]azzling and timeless . . . focus is so unwaveringly aimed toward the transcendent—not God, but the beloved—that we seem to slip into a less cluttered time.”—The Virginia Quarterly Review, “Editor’s Choice” "Mary Oliver calls him '...a Walt Whitman without an inch of Whitman's bunting or oratory.' In these pages, he is more nearly a modern-day Rumi. This is not primarily a poetry of image, but of ideas, perfectly distilled. Orr brings together the monumental themes of love and loss in small, spare, and exquisite koan-like poems."—ForeWord "...magnetic poems that open the world of lyrical verse to the larger questions of what is true and timeless." —The Bloomsbury Review Gregory Orr continues his acclaimed project on the “beloved” with a lyrical sequence about the joys and hungers of being fully engaged in life. Through concise, perfectly formed poems, he wakes us to the ecstatic possibilities of recognizing and risking love. Mary Oliver has called this project “gorgeous,” and said that he "speaks of the events that have no larger or more important rival in our lives—of our love and our loving." If to say it once And once only, then still To say: Yes. And say it complete, Say it as if the word Filled the whole moment With its absolute saying. Later for “but,” Later for “if.” Now Only the single syllable That is the beloved. That is the world. Gregory Orr is the author of ten books of poetry. He teaches at the University of Virginia and lives in Charlottesville.

Book excerpt: Featuring “Good Bones”—called “Official Poem of 2016” by the BBC/Public Radio International. Maggie Smith writes out of the experience of motherhood, inspired by watching her own children read the world like a book they've just opened, knowing nothing of the characters or plot. These are poems that stare down darkness while cultivating and sustaining possibility, poems that have a sense of moral gravitas, personal urgency, and the ability to address a larger world. Maggie Smith's previous books are The Well Speaks of Its Own Poison (Tupelo, 2015), Lamp of the Body (Red Hen, 2005), and three prize-winning chapbooks: Disasterology (Dream Horse, 2016), The List of Dangers (Kent State, 2010), and Nesting Dolls (Pudding House, 2005). Her poem “Good Bones” has gone viral—tweeted and translated across the world, featured on the TV drama Madam Secretary, and called the “Official Poem of 2016” by the BBC/Public Radio International, earning news coverage in the New York Times, Washington Post, Slate, the Guardian, and beyond. Maggie Smith was named the 2016 Ohio Poet of the Year. “Smith's voice is clear and unmistakable as she unravels the universe, pulls at a loose thread and lets the whole thing tumble around us, sometimes beautiful, sometimes achingly hard. Truthful, tender, and unafraid of the dark....”—Ada Limón “As if lost in the soft, bewitching world of fairy tale, Maggie Smith conceives and brings forth this metaphysical Baedeker, a guidebook for mother and child to lead each other into a hopeful present. Smith's poems affirm the virtues of humanity: compassion, empathy, and the ability to comfort one another when darkness falls. 'There is a light,' she tells us, 'and the light is good.'”—D. A. Powell “Good Bones is an extraordinary book. Maggie Smith demonstrates what happens when an abundance of heart and intelligence meets the hands of a master craftsperson, reminding us again that the world, for a true poet, is blessedly inexhaustible.”—Erin Belieu

The moments you know - when you see your parents' marriage dissolving, when you realize you're a boy who likes boys, when you speak the truth and don't know if it will be heard. The moments you don't recognize until later - when you leave things unsaid (even to yourself), when you feel your boyfriend letting go, when you give up on love. And the moment you get love back. In an amazing narrative of poems, Billy Merrell tells an ordinary story in an extraordinary way.

Book excerpt: Poetry. There is something wondrously imponderable about the title of Nancy Botkin's latest poetry collection: the next infinity. What would that be like, the something that comes after everything? After negotiating one's way through religion, through the legacy and loss of parents, through a past receding "small and dim" as the memories of scratchy songs on an AM car radio, through moments fleeting like "ice cream melting faster than we could eat it." At another point she observes, "I'm starting to wonder if I'm in this poem / all by myself." A bit later, in the same poem, she asks "if we are keepers of our own asylum." By unpacking the experience of radical isolation in such unflinching terms, Botkins reveals how we are each our own infinity. And because we share this, we are not so alone after all. It's a lot to think about, and at times she acts as if she'd rather not: "My brain is even less inviting / when it's wild with dark birds flitting / through its spangled hallways." Perhaps less inviting to Botkin, but it is a blessing to her readers who join with those birds flitting through the hallway of her rich imagination. The final image of the book is a cosmic parlor trick, and perhaps that is all life is. And if so, these poems assure us, that's enough.
