Book excerpt: New York City, the unique metropolis that Le Corbusier has called a beautiful catastrophe,' is a natural home to Bruce Gilden. Since 1981, Gilden has been roaming the streets of the city, capturing its characters and eccentricities with hsi confrontational, highly energetic style and exuberant vision. In this new opus, A Beautiful Catastrophe, Magnum photographer Bruce Gilden celebrates a trademark style with abandon, firmly ensconsing him in the pantheon of New York City photographic poets.'

Book excerpt: This is young adult fiction. No. Not the dark stuff. None of that. A Beautiful Catastrophe is all about a normal life gone wrong. It's about my life gone wrong. It's all about my obsessions with fictional characters, my habit of sniffing books before reading them, my insanity, my friends, my family, my passions, and oh, this book contains a lot of stuff about celebrities. That's me: Miss Obsessed-who-hates-being-attached-to-anyone. This book is a dive into the world of teens: the fun, the craziness, the friends, the loves, the hatred - especially towards maths. It's about how I get into trouble and always get away with it. It's about how topsy-turvy a teen's life can be. I messed up my math exam; I fought with my best friend over a trivial issue; I fell off my bike and the whole town knew; I kissed a guy and didn't regret it. For the first time ever, something is about me. My name is Nikita Achanta, and this is my story.

(Yes, potatoes. *eye roll* Can we talk about something else?) And I love it here. Small town values galore and it’s right where I want to raise my girls after my jerk ex traded me in for a “younger, newer model” (his words, not mine). My mom’s the volunteer fire chief in our town and I’m pretty happy hanging out with the auxiliary at the fire hall and doing her grunt work – NOT fighting fires, because, please, I read, love science and my idea of a lot of exercise is having to walk up the stairs twice in the morning before I send my girls off to school and leave for my job as a home nurse. I guess it’s kind of weird that I also coach basketball. Long story. I was pretty happy with my life until the hot shot, all-state baller from my teen years moved back in next door. (I babysat him, yes, but I never changed his diapers. Just wanted to be clear about that.) Guess who’s now the assistant b-ball coach? Logic would say me – especially since I coached my entire first year holding the play book upside down (it turned out to be an old football playbook from the ‘80s, so it’s not like it mattered which way I held it) but the accurate answer is Trey Haywood, my all-star neighbor, and I’m honestly not sure which of us is more upset about it. Anyway, the team was trying to set us up (girls, they’re such romantics) and I don’t think they would have succeeded, but in celebration of breaking our 37 game losing streak, they locked Trey and me in the septic system control room. That changed everything. Not in a good way. Trey Yeah. What she said. And…when I first saw her again, I thought she was a catastrophe. New thought post septic control: she’s a cute catastrophe. (And, holy man, can she kiss.) Listen for free on the Say with Jay channel on YouTube. Reviews for Me and the Cute Catastrophe: ★★★★★ "This is a giggle, snort, snort, laugh out loud kind of book, but there is an underlying message about growing up, letting go of some insecurities, seeing life with all its warts but loving anyway. Oh and the kiss scene is the best." - Wren ★★★★★ "This is a little different than Jessie’s other books, but I LOVED it! Trey and Claire were truly fun to read about. You won’t be disappointed!" - Ashton01 ★★★★★ "It's beautifully written, the characters are true to real, and true to life. It's funny, and loving, and exciting, just like a Rom-Com should be. Although it doesn't have any sex in it, you can still feel the attraction and desire building." - Ken ★★★★★ "This book starts out funny from the very beginning and pulls you right in! I’m actually not a fan of funny books, (just to be clear, I do like a little humor) but this had me hooked right off!" - Kindle Customer ★★★★★ "I admit to being a skimmer. But the way this author writes, I had to stop that behavior and read every word so I wouldn’t miss out on a laugh or grin or smirk. She was just throwing those sentences out there and I couldn’t skim or I would miss them. Thank you so much Jessie for a really enjoyable read." - Shirley Books in the Sweet, Small Town Romantic Comedy in Good Grief, Idaho series: Me and the Cute Catastrophe Me and the Tidy Tornado Me and the Helpful Hurricane Me and the Sweet Snowstorm Me and the Dreamy Doomsday

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No one ever chooses to stop at Black Rock Mesa, it's too desolate. The brutal wind, ever-present and temperamental, tests the willpower of the most stalwart residents. So, when a mysterious woman impulsively disembarks from a bus and gets blown into the town's general store, her presence causes quite a stir. She says little, but her Asian features earn her the nickname "Tokyo." Deciding to stay in town, she reveals little about her past, and is comforted to find little is asked. Slowly she comes to see that Black Rock is not like other towns -- due to the wind, everything, even time, works a bit differently. Black Rock, she learns, was founded by three prospectors looking for gold -- Noah, Shlomo and Apie. Noah, the most charismatic of the three, attracted quarrymen to this unforgiving place to tirelessly chip and haul the slate down from the mesa. But the big gaps left in the stories of the past hint to Tokyo that the town folk have secrets bigger than her own. No one is talking, not even the man Tokyo takes up with, Luke, Noah's son. This reticence suits Tokyo just fine, until one day a strange man shows up in Black Rock with revelations. Ultimately, no secret is immune.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Center for Fiction's Doheny Prize Mike Scalise hits his stride in this page-turner of a memoir featuring a sudden and strange sequence of medical disasters. From its gripping ruptured-brain-tumor emergency room opening, through a series of medical procedures and oddball doctors, Scalise creates a sharply observed, uproariously funny, and deeply moving account of acromegaly, the hormone disorder best known for causing gigantism. Scalise weaves in meticulous research, social history, and vignettes about Andre the Giant and a variety of Hollywood acromegalic villains. He creates a narrative that is informative without feeling pedantic, demonstrating how he has marshaled the narrative of his life so that he can control it rather than being controlled by it. Although his medical story is the primary subject, the emotional engine driving the book is that of his relationship with his mother, a longtime sufferer in her own right, with a chronic cardiac condition likely exacerbated by her penchant for chain smoking and late-night white wine binges. Fraught, frustrating, and often very funny, Scalise's mother—often positioned as his competitor for the spotlight or the status of "best sick person"—winds up being the book's unlikely hero. Mike Scalise's work has appeared in Agni, Indiewire, the Paris Review, Wall Street Journal, and other places. He has received fellowships and scholarships from Bread Loaf, Yaddo, the Ucross Foundation, and was the Philip Roth Writer in Residence at Bucknell University. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.
