Book excerpt: A new edition of the classic travelogue exploring the Balkan Peninsula’s political, social, religious, and economic past. From the assassination that triggered World War I to the ethnic warfare in Serbia, Bosnia, and Croatia, the Balkans have been the crucible of the twentieth century, the place where terrorism and genocide first became tools of policy. Chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by the New York Times, and greeted with critical acclaim as “the most insightful and timely work on the Balkans to date” (Boston Globe), Kaplan’s prescient, enthralling, and often chilling political travelogue is already a modern classic. This new edition of Balkan Ghosts includes six opinion pieces written by Robert Kaplan about the Balkans between 1996 and 2000, beginning just after the implementation of the Dayton Peace Accords and ending after the conclusion of the Kosovo war, with the removal of Slobodan Milosevic from power. Praise for Balkan Ghosts “The product of over a decade of travel and research, this is one of precious few works that allows a Western reader a look into the tortured soul of the Balkan peoples. . . . A superior narrative. . . . Kaplan is a master of this genre.” —Library Journal “A memorable portrait of an increasingly important region.” —Kirkus Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the history of banditry in the medieval Balkans between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. While several scholars have recognized the problems which various outlaw groups caused in the region during the Middle Ages, few have given much attention to the bandits themselves, their origins, their reasons for taking up brigandage, and the steps taken by the central authorities to control their activity. Among other things, this book identifies three main sources of banditry: shepherds, soldiers and peasants. Far from being ʻlone wolvesʼ, these men operated within well-defined social networks. Poverty played a decisive role in driving them to a life of crime, but there is strong evidence to suggest that the growing economic prosperity in parts of the Balkans from the ninth century onwards may have also contributed to the rise of the phenomenon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The timely Population Resettlement in International Conflicts is an edited collection of essays studying forced migration, refugees, and relocation of populations within the context of international conflicts, taking as its immediate background Israel's unilateral disengagement from the Gaza Strip and Northern Samaria in 2005. This volume offers a comprehensive study comparing past cases of forced migration from Europe within the twentieth century with the convoluted situation involving Israelis and Palestinians. An interdisciplinary project that incorporates political science and international relations, geography and demographics, and history and sociology, the book contains a general introduction and overview of forced migration and the international humanitarian regime, a series of case studies from European history, and an examination of different cases related to the Arab-Israeli conflict: Iraqi Jews relocated in Israel; Palestinian refugees; and the resettlement of Israeli Jews. This book is highly relevant to contemporary international politics and is of great relevance to those interested in Middle Eastern and population studies, as well as international relations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a Slavic-speaking religious and ethnic “Other” living just a stone’s throw from the symbolic heart of the continent, the Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina have long occupied a liminal space in the European imagination. To a significant degree, the wider representations and perceptions of this population can be traced to the reports of Central European—and especially Habsburg—diplomats, scholars, journalists, tourists, and other observers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This volume assembles contributions from historians, anthropologists, political scientists, and literary scholars to examine the political, social, and discursive dimensions of Bosnian Muslims’ encounters with the West since the nineteenth century.

Book excerpt: The current geopolitical changes taking place in the world economy exert great influence on the EU (and Slovakia’s) foreign trade relations. This monograph examines the impact of geopolitical changes on the EU foreign trade relations with the countries of the Western Balkans, Ukraine, Russia and Kazakhstan, assesses the impact of the mutual EU and Russia sanctions on the EU foreign trade with the countries selected, and points out the potential for development of Slovakia’s foreign trade relations with these countries. The uniqueness of this monograph lies in the primacy and complexity of the EU foreign trade relations with the countries under consideration and the impact of the mutual EU and Russia sanctions on the EU and Slovakia’s foreign trade with Russia. The outcomes of the conducted research can be of great use to business and government institutions, as well as to European institutions and organizations, teachers, scientists or R&D agencies and others.
