Her life story, while ancient, reverberates with timeless relevance. She is a symbol of resilience, a beacon of light in the darkest of times. Dympna, from her earliest days, exhibited a rare purity of heart and a profound empathy for those burdened by mental and emotional suffering. This booklet provides an account of the background of St. Dympha, the historical narrative surrounding the veneration of her as the guardian saint of individuals facing mental and emotional challenges, along with a nine-day regimen designed to guide individuals towards dedicating themselves to the sacred heart of Jesus. It is dedicated to those who bear the burdens of mental affliction symbolized by the crown of thorns and to those who endeavor to mitigate such afflictions.

Book excerpt: My brothers and sisters, as we come together over the next nine days to honor St. Dymphna, patron of those suffering mental and emotional afflictions, let us do so with open and receptive hearts. Little is definitively known of Dymphna's early life, but the glimpses we find in sacred tradition offer profound insight. Born in seventh-century Ireland to a pagan father and devout Christian mother, she experienced the pains of losing her mother at a young age. Yet through it all, Scripture and prayer sustained her, giving her solace and strength even amid darkness. When tragedy struck again with her father's descent into madness and sinful lust, rather than succumb to fear, Dymphna maintained hope in God's deliverance. She chose flight to escape harm, but found her way not through chance, but divine guidance. Across the sea in Belgium, an entire town would come to revere her for the refuge and healing she offered all who came in need of mind, body or spirit. For countless ages since, St. Dymphna has remained the heavenly advocate for those afflicted with mental or emotional troubles. It was for these individuals, often unseen and uncared for in her day, that she sacrificed her life. In imitation of Christ who tenders the downtrodden, she embraced the marginalized with compassion. Over the coming week, we will call upon this gentle saint's intercession. Through daily prayer, Scripture and reflection, may we experience her lasting effects of inner stillness and wellbeing. Let her example of courage, charity and trust in Providential care encourage and strengthen us, or loved ones in want of relief. On the final day, we pray that all restlessness of heart, whatever its nature, find solace and peace through the watchful care of St. Dymphna. In Christ our hope, let us pray.

Book excerpt: Winner of a first-place award in the healing and self-help category from the Catholic Media Association and a third-place award in general interest from the Association of Catholic Publishers. Are you or someone you love struggling with depression, anxiety, grief, or other mental health concerns? Tommy Tighe, a licensed marriage and family therapist, wants to help you take steps toward reaching and maintaining mental and emotional well-being, not only through self-care, healthy coping mechanisms, and professional intervention but also through prayer, scripture, and developing a relationship with the saints. St. Dymphna’s Playbook combines a therapeutic approach with the deep wells of Catholic faith and spiritual practice, exploring paths toward hope, healing, and wellness. Born out of Tighe’s podcast of the same name, St. Dymphna’s Playbook provides a practical, ready-made game plan for moving toward wellness. It offers concrete explanations of a wide scope of mental health concerns and symptoms related to depression, anxiety, trauma, relationships, and grief, as well as the common emotions and situations that allow them to grow—including fear, social anxiety, isolation, loss, and unhealthy relationships. Tighe shares best practices for understanding and beginning to address each concern and offers a uniquely Catholic understanding, diving into relevant scriptures and introducing us to a Catholic saint or holy person who lived with the same issue—including St. Dymphna, patron of those with mental disorders. Whatever your concern or struggle, you are not alone. The witness of scripture and the saints reminds us of the community we already have as we begin working toward mental well-being.

Book excerpt: [Large print and fully illustrated] Iceland's history is told in the stories of its celebrated figures. From Viking explorers to Saga heroes, the voices that define Icelandic culture are well known. Yet one man in Iceland's past had difficulty finding the words to form his own voice and be known for who he really was: Thorlák Thórhallsson, declared by his people "The Patron Saint of Iceland" in 1198 and officially canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1984. Yet, despite these honors, few have ever heard Thorlák's complete and true story: A child prodigy treated as an adult by those around him, a sorrowful boy from a broken home, a scholar of the emerging theology of merciful love, an innovator in pastoral leadership, and a man who understood the fundamental need to love and be loved. Thorlák of Iceland is an opportunity at last to celebrate this quiet hero who embodies the spiritual heart of the Icelandic people, and to learn from his inspiring true story wisdom for our own age.
