Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some kids grow up fast. Some don't, and some never do. It's usually not the kid's choice. It's just the way things go. Mickey viewed the move to rural eastern Oregon as a new adventure, and indeed it was. Deer and rabbits to hunt, fish to catch, and horses to ride. Learn to operate a tractor and drive a car? As close to heaven as most 12 year old boys can get. Oh yes, and those "adult" things: whiskey, beer, chewing tobacco and cigarettes. Of course there were also the schoolyard bullies, but almost every kid has to put up with them, right? Tragedies and near tragedies. Sexual awakening. Young love, and the thrill and heartache that goes with it. Learning life's lessons: Some, taught by two extraordinary young women, were tender and gentle; other lessons learned were vicious and cruel. It's all a part of growing up. But then Mickey witnesses a horrifying crime and is forced to make choices that few men of any age will ever have to make. This is his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1920s and 1930s, Oregon's legendary bridge engineer Conde B. McCullough designed a first-rate collection of aesthetic bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway to enhance an already dramatic and beautiful landscape. The six largest of these, at Gold Beach, Newport, Waldport, Florence, Reedsport, and Coos Bay, eliminated the last ferries on the Oregon Coast Highway between the Columbia River and California. McCullough planned to build one bridge each year after completion of the Rogue River Bridge at Gold Beach in 1932, but the tightening grip of the Depression threatened his plans. In 1933, McCullough and his staff worked day and night to finish plans for the remaining five bridges, and in early 1934, the Public Works Administration funded simultaneous construction of them. The combined projects provided approximately 630 jobs, but at least six workers perished during construction. After the bridges were complete, Oregon coast tourism increased by a dramatic 72 percent in the first year.

Book excerpt: To Harvest, To Hunt is a rich collection of writings that reveals how diverse peoples have valued and used natural resources throughout the history of the American West. Drawing on family letters, oral traditions, historical records, and personal experience, the book's contributors offer readers new perspectives on the land they live on, the harvests they consume, and the natural resources they manage. Editor Judy Li weaves a tapestry of cultures and voices--from Pueblo tribes in the Southwest and Chinese fishermen in California to Mexican braceros in Oregon and Basque sheepherders in Idaho--as she details the region's historical dependence on the land and sea. Otter, walrus, abalone, grasslands, timber, and water are some of the vital resources discussed by anthropologists, historians, and biologists in stories that tell how cultures struggle to adapt in changing environments. Acclaimed novelist John Nichols, environmental lawyer Charles Wilkinson, and essayist David Mas Masumoto are among the contributors to this collection. Spanning the last 200 years, To Harvest, To Hunt represents Native American, Native Alaskan, European, and Asian immigrants as varied in their perspectives as the landscapes the book describes. Students, scholars, and general readers will come to appreciate the region's once-abundant resources and find this book an illuminating overview of the dynamic between people and the land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Davis tells the story of Bernard Malamud (1914-1986), the self-made son of poor Jewish immigrants who went on to become one of the foremost novelists and short-story writers of the post-war period. The time is ripe for a revival of interest in a man who at the peak of his success stood alongside Saul Bellow and Philip Roth in the ranks of Jewish American writers. Nothing came easily to Malamud: his family was poor, his mother probably committed suicide when Malamud was 14, and his younger brother inherited her schizophrenia. Malamud did everything the second time round - re-using his life in his writing, even as he revised draft after draft. Davis's meticulous biography shows all that it meant for this man to be a writer in terms of both the uses of and the costs to his own life. It also restores Bernard Malamud's literary reputation as one of the great original voices of his generation, a writer of superb subtlety and clarity. Bernard Malamud: A Writer's Life benefits from Philip Davis's exclusive interviews with family, friends, and colleagues, unfettered access to private journals and letters, and detailed analysis of Malamud's working methods through the examination of hitherto unresearched manuscripts. It is very much a writer's life. It is also the story of a struggling emotional man, using an extraordinary but long-worked-for gift, in order to give meaning to ordinary human life.

Book excerpt: After numerous essays, short stories and the heralded memoir A Hole in the Sky, William Kittredge gives us a debut novel that ratifies his standing as a leading writer of the American West. Rossie Benasco’s horseback existence begins at age 15 and culminates in a thousand-mile drive of more than 200 head of horses through the Rockies into Calgary. It’s a journey that leads him, ultimately, to Eliza Stevenson and a passion so powerful, his previously unfocused life gains clarity and purpose. From the settlers, cowboys, and gamblers who opened up this country to the landholders and politicians who ran it, this is an epic tale of love and wide open spaces that stretches over the grand canvas of the twentieth-century West.
